EIGHTH GRADE HISTORY On September eighteenth, 1950, eighteen eighth-grade pupils entered Deputy Junior High, ready and eager to start school. Almost immediately it was an- nounced that Mr. John Schepman was to be our class sponsor. Later in September the class held an election and elected the following officers: president, Shirley Hornsby, vice president, Malcomb Deputy, secretary treasurer, Shirley Ritzline. Pauline Pearson and Mary Lou Campbell were elected as cheer leaders. The eighth grade basket ball players are Malcomb Deputy, Marvin Creech, Donald Plessinger, Eugene Eversole, and Charles Cain. Several of our class are active in h-H, and among those who have won awards are Jeannie Hatton, Shirley Ritzline, Mary Lou Campbell, Gernetta Fields, Maloomb Deputy, and Charles Cain. we were proud of our part in the Christmas program. The entire class is in the chorus which sang as a part of a community Christmas program that was highly complimented Other members not already mentioned in the eighth grade are Virginia Beard, June Ferry, Earl Phillips, Donald Cain, Daisy Rutherford, Eliza Jane Campbell, and Norma Jean Lyle. ujff' ,Aga 2, ,.,x QQ, Q ,u Q 5 .EMIS aemfqff' '. ,' mmm VWW nf 'MQ mr fmm' ,g 7'AW'd4' nf-, M w' uw vmqwlw +tiM'i.u 1-'TH QW- fwfr -Q 1 Sf fls5g5f , ,I 1 Hg 4 I , we g1.:: 1' ,J 1 '. 26 XM W ly: , WMV jx ' ff W P' ' in '4 ,yy X 13? SEVENTH GRADE HISTORY On the eighteenth day of September, 1950, thirty-two seventh grade pupils crowded through the doors of Deputy Junior High to become the largest class in the upper six grades and our teachers say, Uthe liveliest.n Mr. Schepman, our sponsor, acted as chairman for our class election the second week of school. Our class officers are Stanley Nay, president, Sonja Nay, vice president and cheer leader, and Jeanie Cook, Secretary and treasurer. In addition to having a number who could be on the honor roll because of good grades, we have several on the junior high basket ball team. They are Roscoe Herald, Fred Johnson, Kenneth Deputy, and Stanley Nay. we have played several basketball games and have won most of them. Since the beginning of school, we have lost two students, Carolyn Boals and Bill Witt, and have gained three new ones, Rita Dossett, Jgeraldine Coomer, and Billy Coomer, mading us thirty-three in number at present. We think the seventh grade is gaining a reputation for working hard in class time and playing hard in play time and we want to keep that reputation. Good luck! to the Deputy Panthers for the rest of the season and also to the senior class. 4 1 M, , YI U wt.. , H I up 1 W c IWW 'I I qh 1 1 ' , 1 M? ,.. 0, No -' . ,., Q .. . b.. v lr 1 1 .. ,R 1' , ..- .. , w A Y 1 'H A' 1 .. ,m SWK I , ' I V I 1 UMW x. SIXTH GRADE HISTORY On September 18, 1950, the sixth graders found themselves in a new home in the old commercial room, where ordinary desks had replaced typewriters and book-keeping study tables. Twenty-eight pupils enrolled at the beginning of school, but in December Jane Spicer moved to Austin. Although our group is not large we are rather crowded in our narrow room, but we are studying hard and enjoying ourselves at the same time. This fall we organized a softball team. A great deal of spirit was aroused in our games with the other classes. We are glad that we had a chance to participate in the P. T. A. Christmas program. FIFTH GRADE HISTORY When school opened in September, forty-three lively children enrolled in the fifth grade. We have had only one pupil, Perlie Spicer, to move away and one new member, Maurice Chamness from Vienna, join us still keeping our enrol- lment at forty-three. Many times we have complimented ourselves, despite the largest class of school, in getting along and working so well together. During the year our class sold greeting cards and nearly everyone earned for himself a Testament or Bible as a reward. We are planning much more fun the remainder of this year as well as trying to all become sixth graders next Year' ' .-,VAC 'fi V W' I , i 5,3 5 s ' .. . pn ' u ', I . . vu. . ug- . ,,. f XML V, I. -' -:- nl Jn V 3. FOURTH GRADE HISTORY . Thirty-three enthusiastic fourth graders were enrolled the first day of school and We still have the original number. Our average daily attendance has been high, and as a result, interest in our work has never lagged. Werld conditions being what they are today made us realize that we should put forth more effort in trying to be better citizens and live more congenially with our neighbors. Through special emphasis and by example, experience and study, I hope we have learned, a little better, to respect each others dif- ferences and have developed a feeling of brotherhood for all people. 1 ,,. In October Glen Austin moved to near Columbus, but we soon welcomed another boy, Ray Dossett, to our class, thus still making sixteen boys and sixteen girls. Our attendance hasn't been very good due to chicken-pox, colds and the inclement weather. We are all working hard getting ready for examinations and looking forward to starting on the second semester work. K I 1063- 5, fl ,' . ' 4 ' E?-iff f-J' 1 ' ,re f I ' r 1 . Ahead are first days for sev- eral years to come and if these boys and girls can meet them all with as much courage as they displayed this year, they will be well on the way to securing an education. During our ninth week Patty Ann Boals moved to Indianapolis. Bobbie Joe Righthouse entered from Indianapolis during the second month. So now we have thirteen boys and twelve girls. In spite of ice, snow and cold, our attendance has been very good. we are finding that along with our work come many good times at school. we all liked our pictures very much. Although we finally got to bed, we slept very little be- cause of the constant phone calls from our classmate down the hall. It was a sleepy but happy group that left Parkersburg on Sunday morning. We had one rest stop and then on to Table Rock Inn which is located on the top of Back Bone Ridge, where we all enjoyed a delicious dinner. After buying a number of souvenirs, we left on the last lap to Washington. wa crossed West Virginia, Maryland, entered West Virginia again, Virginia, and then into the District of Columbia arriving in Washington about 7:30 on Sunday evening. After taking our suitcases to our rooms, we went up town to eat supper. We then visited the Mayflower Hotel before returning to the Cairo Hotel where we were staying during our time in Washington. After a long day of travel everyone was glad to settle down for a good night's rest. Monday morning saw us ready to start our tour of the city. Never had we seen so much money! we were shown around by a guide who answered questions as well as told us how the money was made. From here we went to the National Gallery of Art. Here one of the most famous art collections in the world is found Ln the rose- white marble gallery which was Andrew Mellon's 15 million dollar gift to the nation. Though our knowledge of art wasn't sufficient to appreciate the great collection, it was all very interesting. Our last tour before noon was the Capitol building. One of the highlights of this tour was our ride in the Senate subway before going into the Capitol. After going through many of the rooms we sat in the gallery overlooking the House Chamber and watched five minutes of a session. We also visited Earl Wilson our congressman, and had our picture taken with him. After dinner we toured the Federal Bureau of Investigation where we were told and shown how the F.B.I. does its job - whether it is smashing a big spy ring or tracking down a notorious public enemy. A guide showed the tools and instruments used in crime and its detection, explained the finger print system used by the bureau, looked at the crime detection laboratories, and finally we were taken to the firearms identification laboratory where a special agent gave an exhibition of how deadly the C-men are with guns. This was One Of the mOSt interesting buildings we visited. From here we went to the Washington monument . We ascended to its summit by the large elevators. Many of the group took pictures from the top of the monument. We stopped at the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. The huge statues of both men were one of the most impressive sights. On our way back to the hotel we passed many of the embassies. Among those we saw were the British,Venezuelan, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish Embassies. Also we drove through the goo. When we got back to the hotel we were ready to rest after walking so much and climbing so many steps. The evening was spent by most of us in talking over the events of the day and listening to the radio with members of the group com- ing in and out of our rooms during the evening. Tuesday found us ready for another day's tour beginning with the Smith- sonian Institure. One of the highlights in the aircraft building was the USpirit of St. Louis,U used by Charles A. Lindbergh in his history-making trans-Atlantic flight. There were so many interesting things in this building that there wasn't nearly enough time tf see as much as we would have liked to. Close to this Smithsonian Institute was the Medical Building that several of us visited. From here we went to thc Supreme Court Building which is considered one of the most beautiful structures in the world. The white marble winding stairway was one of the most interesting things in the interior. Across from the Supreme Court Building was the Library of Congress which is the largest library in the world. One of the library's chief attractions is the original of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. After noon we went to Mount Vernon, stopping on the way at Arlington National Cemetery. On the highest point of the cemetery is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded night and day, and resting on the white marble platform of the impressive amphitheatre. Here, too, is the Lee Mansion which we went through. It has some of the most beautiful furnishings that were seen on our triy. We pro- ceeded on to Mount Vernon. After touring the house, out buildings, the gardens, and the tomb of George and Martha Washington, we boarded the bus and started back to the hotel. We went through the historic city of Alexandria where many historical places were pointed our to us by our guide. We made a brief stop at the Airport and then went bact to the Hotel. Though we were worn out, nearly everyone was ready for the excursion on the Potomac River that night. The boat went as far as Mount Vernon and back. R , f .nwu3QhuQ f -4 wo? We arrived at Gettysburg about 10:00 and picked up a guide to accompany us to the battlefield. The guide explained the battle and pointed out the various points of interest such as Little Round Top, Big Round Top, General Meade's head-quarters, the WWills Houseu in which President Lincoln wrote the nGettysburg Address,N and the Jennie Wade House. At Harrisburg we hit the turn-pike which stretches 160 miles from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh. The interesting points on the highway were the seven tunnels we went through. We stopped at the Midway for a rest stop. We'arrived in Pittsburgh at 5:30. After putting our things in our rooms in the Sheraton Hotel where we were to spend the night, we ate supper then attended a movie. Because this was our last night, several decided that they wouldn't do much sleeping. Those could be detected the next day on the bus. For some reason they seemed a little sleepy! Our bus left the Sheraton Hotel at 7:30 for our last day of travel. We had a rest stop in Cambridge, Ohio, and dinner in Lancaster. Our afternoon rest stop was in Cincinnati. From here on the seniors had their choice of seats on the bus, just a little favor done by the juniors! It was a tired but very happy group that got off the bus in Deputy about 5:00. There was a little sadness in our thoughts because this was really the last time the seniors would be with us on any school activities. Those who went on this trip will never forget it. we express our thanks to the faculty who helped to make the trip a success. WST? si K-Ji 1 ,...A X .., ....... N , it . U. I v , M., f ' --: . x . Fourteen members entered in the 1911?-M8 freshman class, Those were Anna Belle Bowlin, Hbward Ross Von Dissen, Heward Stites, Donald Ritzline, Melvin Bush, William Bush, Hice Turner, Betty Eppley, June Von Dissen, Regina Rutherford, Joyce Phillips, Ellogene Fields, Alma Cochran, and Shirley Henry. Mr. James E. Jenkins was our class sponsor. The class officers were Joyce Phillips, President, Betty Eppley, Vice-President, Anna Belle Bowlin, Secretary and Treasurer. On the day of our initiation we came to school looking very comical and feeling very uncomfortable. we were honored by a party at night. All of us enjoyed the party very much, but we felt we had earned our places as members of the high school School opened September 17, l9h8, with fourteen students entering as sophomores. One new student, Paul Peeler, entered that year. On October l5 we took great pleasure in initiating the freshmen. In our first class meeting of the year we elected the following officers: Joyce Phillips, President, Paul Peeler, Vice-President, and June Von Dissen, Secretary and Treasurer. During the first semester, Regina Rutherford moved to Kentucky. Paul Peeler and Melvin Bush withdrew. Anna Belle Bowlin was elected to succeed Paul Peeler as Vice-President. Mr. Robert Millis was our class sponsor. When school reopened in September, there were ten members of the junior class, six girls and four boys. Our class officers were elected as follows: Joyce Phillips, President, Alma Cochran, Vice-President, Anna Belle Bowlin, Secretary, and Shirley Henry, Treasurer. Mrs. Aleeta Kinder was our class sponsor. we felt quite important during our junior year. On December 9, we received our class rings of which we are all very proud. we sold cokes and candy at the home ballgames and candy at noon to help build our funds for our trip to Washington, D. C. we also sponsored a box-social on January 31 which proved very successful. Early in November, we presented the play, nCome Rain or Shine,U which was a great success and we extend thanks to Mrs. Kinder for the success of the play. Bill Bush was the only junior on the basketball team and Betty Eppley was elected cheer-leader for the third year. School opened in September 1950 with nine seniors. They were Alma Cochran, Joyce Phillips, June Von Dissen, Anna Belle Bowlin, Shirley Henry, Howard Ross Von Dissen, Howard Stites, Bill Bush, and Donald Ritzline. After the Thanksgiving vacation, Betty Eppley re-entered to graduate with us at the end of the year. Officers were elected as follows: Joyce Phillips, President, Shirley Henry, Vice-President, June Von Dissen, Secretary, and Alma Cochran, Treasurer. Anna Belle Bowlin was chairman of all committees. Mr. Butler was our class sponsor, Bill Bush is the only member of the class who plays basketball and we are very proud of his good work. How we have wished to be seniors! Now that we are members of that class, time is passing much too quickly. Each day brings the end of school closer and with it our senior play and graduation exercises. Whether our last days of high school will be sad or happy ones, we are, nevertheless, looking into the future with eagerness. I' 1 ,4 1 Ll! J . , r 1. F O 94 OL- Ol: in xg. . As do all junior classes, we sold candy and cokes at ballgames and during each noon hour. H we received our class rings on November 15 after much eager waiting. We like them very much. We are proud of our basketball players: Buddy Shelton, Roy Huff, Bobby McCreery, Leroy Sipe, Avery Gray, and Richard Lowry. Marvin North is student manager. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY As pleased as we were to be green freshmen, we were even more pleased to be full fledged sophomores when we entered school in the Fall of 1950. At our first class meeting we elected the following officers: Carolyn Nay, President, Ellen Hammersley, Vice President, Judy Henry, Secretary, and Donna Wallace, Treasurer. we lost three students from our class this year, Anna Huff, Betty Bowling, and Delbert Parker, but we will gain Raymond Martin the second semester. Soon after school started we were busy planning the annual freshman-soph- omore party. In order to make some money, we took orders for home-made cakes and we were quite successful in this venture, for we made sixteen dollars. Our class has been represented in the activities of the chorus, which sang for the junior play and for the Christmas program. Judy, Ellen, and H. C. are in the orchestra. we are proud to be represented in basketball by Paul Gene Finch, on the first team, and Larry Campbell and Robert Hatton on the second team. H. C. Eversole is student manager, and Judy Henry and Ellen Ham ersley are cheer- leaders. w Now we are looking forward to tournament time, the senior play, the all- school picnic and all the other good times we have as the end of school comes. we hope to be back next year as juniors when we want you to sit up and take notice, because if we are few in number we think it's still true that precious things are done up in small packages. Our best wishes to the seniors of 1951! FRESHNAN CLASS HISTORY On September 18, 1950, twenty-two green freshmen, eight girls and fourteen boys entered Deputy High School. We have been very fortunate to keep all twenty two of them. CLASS PROPHECY The Junior Class having taken a thorough course in phrenology, found some interesting skulls in the Senior Class. And after deep study we found that after ten years, these students will be: DONALD RITZLINE: Don is an example of the perfect speaker. He never stutters or stam ers. And how he can pronounce those long words! He is to be presented with a med- al for the preservation of correct speech. wwf? Your voice, sir, will travel far and wide, Giving lectures by radiog You'1l talk on cooking, sanitation, And things that men ought to know. JOYCE'PHILLIPS: Joyce, after much travel extending over Europe and Northern Africa, has now settled down as the head nurse at John Hopkins' Hospital, experimenting with the cure of the sneeze. She is also head of Dr. John Williams, residence on Bond Street. wins You would like to travel the ocean, Such trips give you thrills of delight, But you'll take your trips in the water In the bathtub on Saturday night. HOWARD STITES: we find Howard as an accountant and bookkeeper at the Lookout First National Bank. Isn't that amazing? Remember how much trouble Howard used to have with his sets back in Wh9W and WSOW? we hear Howard still saying, WWe1l, it wasn't easy.n ' Q 444+ You are fond of handsome young ladies, You have loved a dozen or more, But you'll marry a homely fat widow Because sue has riches galore. BETTY EPPLEY: Betty is the charming type, domestic, has a slight inferiority-complex due to the fact that she has received only second in a statedwide bread baking contest. After several years she will be the wife of a prominent business man with the nicest home and the best meals in town. Her husband will become bored and run away with the cashier at the tearoom around the corner from their home. unix You're too gentle to utter harsh words, And cross looks you seldom bestow, You will wed a homely boob because You're too kind to hand him a WNOW. WILLIAM BUSH: Bill has an athletic type and a lethargic mind-the patient type. He likes to sit and watch things. He is deeply interested in athletics, but cannot be manager of a ball team or boxer, as that would require too much moving around. He will keep a racing stable. He will keep a stable of racing snails, lie in a hammock, and gaze at the cool gray stone of the track, as his faithful snails crawl on and up to victory. 444+ Bill is just like a worm, he'll squirm around until some chicken picks him ups ALMA COCHRAN: Mrs. Nicholas Gardenia, better known to us as Alma Cochran, was one of the raving kind. She is a well-known reporter of the Spooky Hollow Times. Because of her ability to look into other people's business without being embarrassed, and her cast-iron nerves, she will be an excellent one. A . v din ' WE SEE UCARM NW The sophomore, junior, and senior girls were guests of the Psi Iota Xi sorority at the Indianapolis Symphony presentation of the opera, NCarmenn, January 22, 1950. Tickets were made available through the courtesy of Miss Elsie Sweeney of Columbus, a benefactor of the Indianapolis Symphony. Mrs. Aleeta Kinder was sponsor of the local group. Traveling by bus to Indianapolis, the girls were impressed with the season al decorations of our capital city and particularly with the replica on the Circle of the Wise Men's visit to the Christ Child. WCarmenW was sung only partially in English and only partially dramatizedg but the participants were costumed as in Bizet's original composition, and as the story was familiar to the group, it was easy to follow the story of this loved musical drama. The musical background was beautifully provided by the Indianapolis Symphony under the direction of Fabien Sevitzky. The group is grateful to the Psi Iota Xi and to Miss Sweeney for a lovely holiday treat. As Wordsworth would say: UThe music in my heart I bore long after it was heard no more.n Those attending in the local group were Shirley Henry, Joyce Phillips, June Von Dissen, Betty Eppley, Eleanor McClanahan, Martha Jo Ford, Margaret Rutherford, Marjorie Johnson, Katie Von Dissen, Betty Ritzline, Benita Cole, Alma Cochran, Carolyn Brown, Judy Henry, Carolyn Nay, Donna Wallace, and from Paris Crossing, Shirley Joseph, Lorretta Green, and Wilma Garrity. Besides Mrs. Kinder, co-sponsors for the Gamma Lambda Chapter of Psi Iota Xi were Mrs. Elda Manes, Mrs. Ike Taff, and Mrs. Crystal Lurton. HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL The senior class sponsored a Halloween Carnival at the gym on the night of October 31. The gym was decorated in keeping with the occasion with jack-o- lanterns, corn shocks and black and gold crepe paper. Those who came costumed paraded before the judges and prizes were given to the three best costumed. Everyone enjoyed the horror house, the fortune telling booth, the fish pond, the dart board, and the refreshment stand where we sold cold drinks, pie, popcorn, cocoa, and sandwiches. FRESHMAN-SOPHOMORE PARTY On one night in October the sophomores had a party for the freshmen at the gym. All the sophomores and most of the freshmen were there. The soph- omores thoroughly initiated the freshmen and had a delightful time playing games afterward. we thought Mr. Butler earned the right to be called a soph- omore after he ran with Nancy Sue in the suitcase race. we think the freshmen enjoyed the party as much as the sophomores enjoyed Yi-O P o v I E ,A 1 ' C .lg h . 5 a' ig , 0 l x 5 .
