SENIOR TRIP MONDAY Monday, un the dead of the nught the Senuors, bleary eyed wuth sleep congregated un the damly lut Erue statuon At approxumately I I9 am we boarded the traun amud much confusuon and proceeded to settle down play cards la penny a game-Mr Terry always seemed to wun one way or anotherl, and o very few slept At 5 30 we orruved at Jersey Cuty and crossed to the Bug Cuty vua the Hudson tube Once on the New York sude we took a subway to 42nd Street From there we walked to IZ7 West 43rd Street the exact locatuon of the Hotel Woodstock The manager vuewed our arruvol wuth trepudatuon After unpackung and takung care of munor detazls, we left the hotel to breakfast at a cafeteruo on the corner of West 43rd Street and Broadway across from the Paramount where Harry James was playung Shortue and Carmen unsusted that ut was called Hector s the cafeterua, I mean Follawung breakfast we took a Fufth Avenue bus to George Washungton Brudge whuch was astoundungly huge, Grants Tomb the unfunushed Cathedral of Saunt John the Duvune Columbua Unuversuty whuch was Muss Waller s alma mommy and walked through Harlem where we saw our furst zoot suits At noon we ate at a rather crowded cafeterua-also named Hectors After lunch we toured Rockefeller Center gueded by o tall dork, exceedungly handsome l A name of Bull Included un thus was a tour of N BC where we saw Red Skelton lollung on the stage rehearsung for Tuesday nught s broadcast Then we hurned back to the hotel to change our clothes and to take along enough to observe that we could see the Empure State Buuldung and the Henry Maller Theater where Helen Hayes was playung un Harruet from Shortues and Pats room and that there was o fure escape lust outsude the wundow un Gus and my room That nught we duned at Toffenettu s whuch us famed for uts Kung Cole Specuol lham and sweetsl Thus was on one of the other corners of West 43rd and Broadway After dunner we dashed to the Furestone program and mussed by a matter of a few seconds From there we pushed off to a scuentufuc exhubut and a half hour subway rude The latter group had a feru'y rude un mund at the moment but they mussed the boat We got together once more un front of the Vanderbult Theater and were shoved unto the Fred Warung ll oclock program at opproxumately lO3O When everythung got under way Freddue dusplayed an unexpected sense of humor and we loved ut Carmen saud that that nught whule they were havung a party the Manager called personally and offered magnu fucent servuce And to thunk we dldnt dare to ask for even a washclath TUESDAY Tuesday mornung at a decldedly unearthly hour we re ved a polute tall rught uts yust a matter of apunuonl call from Mr Terry marshallung us from our few hours of beauty sleep Wed spent half the nught lookung for the extra blankets wuth the expected results We trauled out to breakfast at Hectors the one on 43rd and Broadway About half,an hour later we took a bus to La Guardua Fueld where we vuewed varuous types of planes and unuforms Ah those unuforms That noon we ate at the Fueld then splut unto two groups for the afternoon-one group wuth Mr Terry to the ball game the other wuth Muss Waller ta see Harry James The ball game was the openung game of the Guants vs Boston Braves Mayor La Guardua was there to throw un the ball though he left soon after dont blame hum ut was colder than blue blazes The other group were of the opunuon that Harry James was worth wautung for After changung our clothes un the hotel and Crammung supper at an H and H Automat lthat us the rest of the class dud l got muslaudu we went to Raduo Cuty Musuc Hall to vuew the annual Easter pageant the Rockettes, and Flught For Freedom In some round about way we had procured tuckets for the Salute To Youth program whuch featured Raymond Pouges orchestra Wulluom L Whute author of such books Queens Due Proudly Journey for Margaret, and They Were Expendable was guest speaker The boys and a few of the gurls who couldnt stand such an untel lectuol our went bowlung wuth Mr Terry WEDNESDAY We arose comparatuvely early breakfasted at the some old cofeterua and took a subway to the Staten Island ferry We rode across most of us bravung the wund and cold on the deck It was from there we got our furst glumpse of the Statue of Luberty And you should have seen the Brutush Naval offucers we had quute a few glumpses of on the way back After rollung off the ferry we walked to Fraunces Tavern where Washungtan made hus farewell address to a handful of offucers Somehow we got to Chunatown where we ate at Lee s Restaurant lSounds luke home doesn t ut9l Varuous members of the class had varuous opunuons of the food In the afternoon we went by bus to Central Park where most of the tume was spent un the monkey house compar ung saud monkeys to persons of our acquauntance Muss Waller and Mr Terry our erstwhule chaperons rested theur feet and ate some more on the patuo About three hours later we crossed the street rode down a couple of blocks on a bus druven by a rather urote young man ra the Hayden Planetaruum We euther dropped asleep durung the show or just about broke our necks tryung to look at the ceulung After supper lat another H and H automatl we splut unto two groups-one wuth Muss Waller to see Junnor Muss at the Magestuc Theater the other wuth Mr Terry to see Stars on lce at the Center Theater Followung the shows we were guven shore leave untul l 30 THURSDAY Thursday mornung we undulged un the long felt desure to sleep late Then the usual mad rush to cram everythung unto the last day seeung Harry James and Jummy Dorsey wundow shoppung snoopung around Macy s loccasuonally even goung so far as to buy somethungl and lust foolung around un general At twelve noon everyone reported back to the hotel to pack and check out As we swurled out of the revolvung door a great sugh from the management was heard-or was ut just the breeze created by the door? After checkung our bags we were left to our own de vuces for the afternoon We departed accomponued by the stern admonushment ta show our faces at the Duxue Hotel at 7 OO p m for our farewell banquet lBanquet wuth raw roasted beef blah'l Our meal was served to the accom panument of Al Trace s zany orchestra At ten o clock we left the Plantatuon room collected our luggage from the bus statuon check room took the subway to Jersey Cuty and eventually staggered unto the trauns where we were placed un a separate car the Erue Co proud ly thought ut would be safer The rude home was made en uoyable to mast by a great deal of horse play To the few who wanted to sleep ut was downrught musery And so ut ended-gone but not forgotten As everyone un the vullage undoubtedly knows we ar ruved home about 5 20 a m weary grouchy hungry foot sore but ready to go back on the next traun 1 1 . - ' ' I ll I - , .
