' ' THE VICTORY CORPS All over the country hugh schools are organuzung their classroom offer ungs guudance and personnel programs to further the war effort Two obuectuves of the hugh schools war tume program to whuch the Victory Corps us related are ll l the traunung of youth for that war servuce that wull come after they leave school and l2l the actuve partucupatuon of youth un the community s war effort whule they are yet un school The furst seems closer to what goes on un school classrooms and shops the second to the out of clogs actuvutues of students The Vuctory Corps organuzatuon takes account of oth Any and all students enrolled un a secondary school who un the uudg ment of the pruncupal meet the following simple requurements may be enrolled as general members of the Vuctory Corps l The student should be partucupatung un a school physical futness program appropriate to hus abulutues and needs un the lught of hus probable contrubutuon to the natuon s war effort 2 The student should be studyung or have studied school courses appropruate to his age grade abuluty and probable ummeduate and future usefulness to the natuon s war effort wuthun the lumuts of the faculutues of the school 3 The student should be currently partucupatung un at least one um portant contunuung or recurrung war time actuvuty Upon acceptance for general membership un the Vuctory Corps students may ldurung theur last year or twol be organized unto specual servuce duvusuons ln order to provide for unuformuty throughout the natuon fuve duvusuons are provuded for Aur Servuce Duvusuon Land Servuce Duvusuon Productuon Servuce Duvusuon Communuty Servuce Duvusuon However sunce our school lacks the necessary faculutues for two of these duvusuons Sea Servuce and Aur Servuce we have been able to organize only the other three duvusuons Members of the Land Servuce Duvusuon should be plannung and have begun prelumunary preparatuon for servuce un some branch of the ground forces of the Army Members of the Production Servuce Duvusuon should be plannung and have begun prelumunary preparation for servuce un war undustry agriculture or other essentual cuvuluan productive occupations Members of the Community Servuce Duvusuon should be plannung and have begun prelumunary preparatuon for work un community or other servuce occupations such as teaching social work meducune nursung dentistry lubraruanshup or other professuonal servuces stenographer typust book keeper salesman or other dustrubutuve or commercial servuce homemakung chuld care home nursung nutrutuon or sumular servuce A Vuctory Corps un every secondary school wull do much to stimulate Ameruca s sux and a half mulluon hugh school youth to prepare themselves to help meet crutucal manpower needs un the month s ahead Moreover ut wull give these students an opportunuty to udentufy themselves ummeduately and durectly wuth the war effort through varuous forms of servuce actuvutues 'Quoted from Paul V McNutt I I I 1 . Bill hasnt any hobbies but he was a member of the cooking club and chess club. This year he is the assistant treasurer of the Senior class. After school he intends to work on the farm for a while. ROBERT GUNN MONROE- Bob Reverend has as an outstanding feature a caustic humor a keen mind and a worldly knowledge that stands him in good stead with the other members of the class. Born in New York City on March 23 i925 he l'10S lived in Detroit Binghamton Chicago land Grantonl. As Treasurer of the Class of 1943 both his Junior and Senior years he hos never failed to have his books out of balance. Archery judo dancing farming hunting and 4-H have occupied his leisure hours both in school and out. He dislikes living in cities and people who refuse to think. Broadway About half,an hour later we took a bus to La Guardua Fueld where we vuewed varuous types of planes and unuforms Ah those unuforms That noon we ate at the Fueld then splut unto two groups for the afternoon-one group wuth Mr Terry to the ball game the other wuth Muss Waller ta see Harry James The ball game was the openung game of the Guants vs Boston Braves Mayor La Guardua was there to throw un the ball though he left soon after dont blame hum ut was colder than blue blazes The other group were of the opunuon that Harry James was worth wautung for After changung our clothes un the Freedom In some round about way we had procured tuckets for the Salute To Youth program whuch featured Raymond Pouges orchestra Wulluom L Whute author of such books Queens Due Proudly Journey for Margaret, and They Were Expendable was guest speaker The boys and a few of the gurls who couldnt stand such an untel lectuol our went bowlung wuth Mr Terry WEDNESDAY We arose comparatuvely early breakfasted at the some old cofeterua and took a subway to the Staten Island ferry We rode across most of us bravung the wund and cold on the deck It was from there we got our furst glumpse of the Statue of Luberty And you should have seen the Brutush Naval offucers we had quute a few glumpses of on the way back After rollung off the ferry we walked to Fraunces Tavern where Washungtan made hus farewell address to a handful of offucers Somehow we got to Chunatown where we ate at Lee s Restaurant lSounds luke home doesn t ut9l Varuous members of the class had varuous opunuons of the food In the afternoon we went by bus to Central Park where most of the tume was spent un the monkey house compar ung saud monkeys to persons of our acquauntance Muss Waller and Mr Terry our erstwhule chaperons rested theur feet and ate some more on the patuo About three hours later we crossed the street rode down a couple of blocks on a bus druven by a rather urote young man ra the Hayden even goung so far as to buy somethungl and lust foolung around un general At twelve noon everyone reported back to the hotel to pack and check out As we swurled out of the revolvung door a great sugh Love and kisses, THE YEARBOOK STAFF ARCHERY CLUB The Archery club, under the direction of Miss Marjory Roberts, has in the past been one of the most active and most popular of all student activi- ties. This year it has been impossible to hold intra-scholastic meets. and with the unusually de- layed spring, the club has hardly gotten under way. However, an active month is anticipated. L Jun-non ann cnoss JUNIOR RED CROSS The Junior Red Cross has contributed to the war effort in many dif- ferent ways this year. ln the fall many girls folded bandages at the Red Cross rooms. The boys in shop made a number of articles which will be used in hospitals for soldiers. These include canes. bedside tables, writing boards, and shuffleboard sets made under the supervision of Mr. McLenithen. Knitted articles have been made by girls in Mrs. Lynch's knitting group, and kit bags for soldiers overseas have been prepared by other Junior Red Cross members. Both boys and girls have worked in campaigns to collect scrap and books for men in the service. The seventh graders prepared a letter-booklet to send to children in England, Elizabeth Pardy, Robert Page, and Juanita La Tourett have acted as a committee assisting Miss M. Smith in planning activities for the year.
