PHELAN I WITH deepest gratitude we, the Class of '53, thank Dr. Phelan for his un- tiring efforts in making our days at Depew High School as pleasant and successful as they have been. He has worked with us and for us throughout our high school years. His interest and understanding have been of great help in boosting our morale for whatever proiect we planned. Through his efforts, we have had well-bal- anced programs in education and recreation. His wise leadership and co- operation with the students, will never be forgotten. To a great man and a good friend of every student, we give our humble thanks for all he has done to make our days at Depew High School long to be remembered. 8 BOARD OF E DUCATION T HE Board of Education has, through its remarkable energies and foresight, made our years at Depew High School ones never to be forgotten. The new football field, which we have been using for the past two years, is looked upon with pride by the students at D. H. S. as well as all the people in the community. We mustn't forget the building of the new school at Transit Road, which greatly relieved the crowded situation in our school for the teachers ancl students of the lower grades. This certainly portrays the work ofa group of co-operative and industrious men who plan for the future of the young citizens of Depew. The Board of Education has, indeed, done a great iob and deserves much praise and admiration for its accomplishments. The Class of '53 wishes to thank the Board of Educa- tion, who works not for profit but for the good of the whole community. Its unending services are greatly appreciated by the Class of '53 as well as all the stu- dents at D. H. S. H. S. have much to offer to students who wish to further their education and for those who are in- terested in developing their skill in any particular trade they desire. Each student has the opportunity to plan a program that will fit his own needs and interests. There are a variety of courses, such as, business, math, science, art and many others, from which a student is able to choose. If a boy or girl shows that he really wants to accomplish the goal he seeks, the teachers are always willing to help to the best of their ability. In working together with the teachers and the other students in his classes, a student is able to realize what an impor- tant part cooperation plays in every day life. Thus, in the classes at D. H. S. a student may obtain an intellectural, as well as a social, education. VW Work. . We fiudy. .. Use the rest of time to study for tomorrow . . . SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY A S freshmen of the Central School, we enioyed a very successful year under the guidance of Mrs. Dombrowski. The class officers were: president, Robert Stevens, vice-president, Ruth Durso, secretary, Sandra Lehman, and treasurer, Paul Balkowiec. The first social event was a Get Acquainted dinner and dance held on February l4. This was enioyed by all who attended. Besides the inter- class dances that many freshman attended, there was the formal ball in May. The freshman class of the North Junior High also had a successful year under the guidance of Miss Trivisond and Miss Sanfilipo. Their class officers were: presidentg Robert Maxwell, vice-president, Ronald Kantra, secretary: Jeanette Green, and treasurer, Theresa Gramza. The social events were a Halloween Dance, a Christmas Party, Valentine Dance and a May Flower Hop. These parties and dances were successful and enioyed by all who attended. Our graduation was a quiet but wonderful affair. lt was the third year that freshmen received their diplomas in caps and gowns. ' 48 T HE sophomore class consists of l2O girls and boys coming from Depew and Cheektowaga. The class officers are: president, Martin Connelly, vice-presi- dent, Agnes Woolley, secretary, Jane Stapleton, and treasurer, Kent Repka. Mr. Kraus is our class advisor and during the course of the year, the students have co- operated very well with the class officers and Mr. Kraus. Proof of this was seen in the magazine, Red Cross and Community Chest drives which found the sophomores right at the top. Our first social event as sophomores was the dinner dance held at school the week of December l5. Only sophomores attended the dinner, but many friends of the sophomore class were in attendance at the dance. The sophomores have been very well represented at the interclass dances. During the spring our class held a Soph- omore Hop. We are looking forward with much anxiety to the many big social events as well as scholastic success in our junior and senior years. Upon graduation we hope to leave not only with the fond memories of the two past years but with a cherished one for all four. TOP: F. Foster, F. Piglowski, W. Gnorek, R. Frantz, S. Condello, K. The class then took part in the selling of magazines and two of the freshman homerooms ranked high in the sales. The freshman Christmas party was held December 9, and was enioyed by all the students and teachers that attended. The class is now looking forward to the other big events of the year which are, the Graduation Ball, to be held on May 22, and the Graduation exercises to be held on June l9. CLASS HISTORY T HE freshman class of '53 started its many activities by electing the officers they thought would make the best leaders. The successful ones were: Gordon Har- rington, presidentp Paul Landgraf, vice-presidentp Barbara Bierut, treasurerp and Gayle Hodan, secretary. At the first meeting we decided upon the activities we would engage in during the year. Plans were made for the first dance, The Harvest Moon Hop. The committees worked well together and the dance was a great success both so - cially and financially. All were in favor of selling Christmas cards as a fund-raising proiect. A cash prize was given to each of the teams that sold the most boxes. The winners were: Janice Drasziewicz, Carol Koeth, Patricia Keicher, Eleanor Santley, Arlene Santley, and Janet Sharpe. Early in November the Freshman basketball team was organized. The boys won several games and showed remarkable talent and sportsmanship. The first semester was brought to a close with a well-planned Christmas party, dancing, caroling, exchanging gifts, were but a few of the activities which added to the Christmas spirit and feeling of merriment as all adjourned for the Christmas vacation. February brought our between seasons dance and the last social event was a Maytime Frolic. Both were enioyed by everyone. Graduation closed the year for us and while ours was not the first class to be graduated from North Junior High we were assured that our activities made us one of the finest. 55 ' 5 iffy lx- ,,1.A,x4 f nx 4A4x X I x NJ A , ,Ll . - , f-N! m -K .Q-.fwf-rf ill' 'lf' Wir' Q. With the graduation of Marty Bauer, Gene ldzialc, Joe Schultz, Nicky Pel- leterie, Captain Gene Miller and Dave Newlands there will be many veterans to start next years squad, bolstered by a very good J. Tennis HIGHLIGHTS A LTHOUGH the Depew' High tennis team lost all its matches, the team showed excellent sportsmanship and an improvement is expected this year, as six mem- bers of the team will be returning. The athletic policy of our school has been to provide as diversified an athletic program as is possible. To that end there is being placed a continuing and greater emphasis on the so-called minor sports of which tennis is one. It is hoped that more boys will realize the opportunities that are provided for them and avail themselves of the chance to participate on the tennis team. Through participation in tennis, the boys develop in a sport which they can continue long after graduation. Mr. Guerra has done a remarkable iob so far, and under his continued super- vision it is expected that Depew will break into the win column once more. 78 G0 HIGHLIGHTS EPEW S dlvot diggers, led by Tom McCarthy who had a 90 average and 29 ponnts for the season, won flve of ten nn dual matches, won one of three exhlbn tions Tom McCarthy also took low medalnst honors ln the league match The hrghlrghts of the season were wlns over East Aurora ln an exhsbntlon and over rival Lancaster In a league match by a score of I4 I Lancaster forfeited the return match Wuth three members returning we can look forward to a very successful season next year Passke T McCarthy C Krol D Cybulskl V Stachura B Rechm J Deffendorfer 79 TOP: D.
