Joseph Lort Principal 1949-1960 Mr. Lort came to South in 1949 after having served as principal of North High for four years, and as a teacher, boys' adviser and principal at Skinner Iunior High. In addition to this varied ex- perience Mr. Lort brought with him a warm smile, a sincere interest in young people and their activities, and a special affection for South Denver, where he has lived since childhood. He graduated from the original South High and from the University of Denver, and did graduate work at Columbia before returning here to teach. As our principal, Mr. Lort has supported the school athletic teams and academic competitors with confidence and enthusiasm, given understanding and friendly help with our problems, and has often entered into the spirit of student projects. The only South principal ever to be faced with a twelve- period day and a student body of over three thousand, he has shown unfailing cheerfulness and optimism concerning school progress. Through his leadership he has earned a place in the hearts of the school and the community. We hope, Mr. Lort, that as you look back on your years at South you will remember your thousands of children with as much affection as we will re- member you. It is with love and admiration that we dedicate this 1980 Iohnny Reb to you.
