The standard is five A's in academic subjects and B's in all other subjects. Some of the students who are admitted to Triple S in llB stay in the club during their entire junior and senior years. Membership is on a yearly basis. lf, at the end of the school year, a member hasn't maintained his high average, he is automatically dropped from the club. This organization is the only one at South which has the privilege of meeting during school hours, These meetings are held monthly, and special assemblies are presented by Triple S through the year. Page 22 SQUARE DANCE CLUB Swing your part'ner 'round 'n 'round, till the hull of your foot makes a hole in the ground! This and many calls similar to it are heard at each meeting of the Square Dance Club. The dances, with the girls resplendent in their long full skirts, and the boys in their levis, loud shirts, and wild kerchiefs are really something to seel At the beginning of the year, they went over the fundamentals of square dancing, and after learning them, went through the various dances. Back and forth they swung, trying not to stop and ponder what to do next, because if they paused for even a moment, they would find them- selves in quite a tangle! The officers are elected by the members and hold meetings every so often in order to take care of all the business of this new and fun-loving club. First Row: Tom Grinstead, Dale Wolter, Jack Stoddard, Don Andrews, Perry Harris, Don Burdg, Berwin Davies, Jack Ter Borg, Jack Woods, Gerald Bath, Don Anderson. S CLUB One of the most difficult clubs to belong to is South's S Club for boys. ln order to become eligible for membership into the club, a boy must first earn a varsity letter in any sport After earning the letter, the prospective mem- ber makes an application for membership, A stiff iniation follows this, and after going through this initiation, each boy signs the S Club book, and becomes a member of the club. The organization meets on the first Tuesday of every month to discuss all business matters. Most of the business consists of planning so- cial affairs such as the Father and Son Night, the S Club Picnic, and the S Club Dance. This year the theme of the dance was S Club Shuffle. All of these activities are regular an- .nual events of the club. Page 23 Page 24 Row l: Tom Vincent, Bob Kline, Lee Pritchard, Frank McKibben, Mel Spurlin. Throughout the high school years, the South Hi-Y seeks to accomplish its purpose, which is to create, maintain, and extend, through the school and community, high standards ot Chris- tian living. To achieve this, the meetings are made to be not only interesting, but inspirational also. To vary the programs, they have devotionals, debates, athletics, and other things of this type. At least once a month the club has a party ot some kind, and also, monthly, an All-City Hi-Y dinner is held. Here, the boys from other schools have opportunity to meet boys from South who have the same interests as they have and vice versa. The tour guiding principles of this club are clean speech, clean sports, clean scholarship, and to sum them all up . . . clean living, - 3 s . . i A, 5 Row l: Neveta Jones, Marjorie Watson, Evelyn Nelson, Ruth Miles, Margaret Tiemens, Mary Anne Iverson, Rita Brittenham, Joan Rinker, Mary Bernard, Sally Jetfry, Leona Schemp. This is usually done by entering one of the four major sports, speedball, volleyball, softball, and basketball. By coming to nearly every practice and playing every game each girl re- ceives lOO points. Each girl, as she becomes a member of the Association, is presented with a small purple and white S cut from felt. As soon as a girl becomes a member of the C.A.A., she starts earning points to be in the C-irls' Sports Club. After earning 750 points, each receives a large purple and white felt D, is automatically a member of the Sports Club, and may wear a letter sweater. A small gold D pin is given to those earning lOOO points and a cer- tificate to l2OO point winners. Other sports besides the four major ones are table tennis, tennis, badminton, and swimming. To anyone who is a member of the Senatus Populusque Romanus Latin Club, this phrase will be extremely familiar. The meetings of this interesting organization are held in Room llO, on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month, and this year have been centered on Rome and its contributions. S. P. Q. R. differs from other language clubs, in that it is extra-curricular. S. A. C. BOWLING CLUB Strike! My gosh, l've finally made a strikel 'll l was beginning to think l'd never make it. What a thrill it is to watch the ball roll down the alley and knock all the pins down. Although strikes are rare for beginners, the girls in the Bowling Club have a grand time. Just call me Sharpshooter Jones? A whole new vocabulary is used down on the range on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Awards are given to Pro- Marksman, Marksman, Marksman First Class, and Sharpshooter. As proficiency increases, bars are added to the Sharpshooter award. SPANISH CLUBS Muchas Gracias! Ot course this isn't the way to start writing on the two Spanish Clubs, because everyone knows what Muchas Gracias means. There should be some deep, mysterious-looking words that only the advanced Spanish cl-asses would be able to read. ln Spanish 5, 6, 7, and 8, all ot the members learn to speak a little more Spanish and some become very good indeed. Emphasis is given to conversation in both clubs, although reading and the fine grammar points are taken up, too. In our three years at South, we have an excellent opportunity to be- come well acquainted with the fascinating French language. French is fun. In L'Acadamie Francaise, which is a class run like a club, the study of the language is pursued by studying French customs and litera- ture. At the end of the year, a dinner fete at a downtown hotel completes the work. Charmant, n'est-ce pas? FOLIO LEAVES As the only literary club which South can boast of, Folio Leaves is often mistaken for a staid, refined establishment with an atmosphere of yellowing pages and 51.75 words-yet to the members themselves, nothing could be more hil- arious than this misconception! At the Monday night meetings, manuscripts which have been submitted for entrance are read and voted upon, members' manuscripts are read and criticized, and special activities are planned. ART CLUBS There are two art clubs here at South. The Art Club and its auxiliary, the Art Service Club. These clubs meet during the week and discuss plans for visits to various studios in Denver. Speakers and instructors come from Denver University and talk to the young artists at some of their meetings. In the spring, the clubs give a tea for anyone interested in seeing the work done by the art students, not only in the clubs but in the art classes as well. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council of South is made up of the officers from each of the three classes . . . sophomore, junior, and senior, the three school officers, as well as most of the presidents of the various active organizations in school. This group was elected by the student body and therefore has the permission of the student body to see to it that there is cooperation and equal representation from all phases of our high school life. lt takes care of everything concerning the Purple and White day program. Without the Student Council, our Purple and White days might not be nearly the success that they always have been. Every one of us owes our sincere thanks and appreciation to this group of students for their able assistance in making our school a better place. The duties of the organization are many and varied. They are constantly patroling the hall, watching for misdemeanors, there is at least one boy watching the parking lot during all periods: they see that no one uses the wrong stairs during passing periods, they stand at the auditorium doors during all assemblies, taking care ot Movie Club tickets, and keeping general order in the audi- torium. Each member is identified by a white jacket with a purple and white disc on the right side, this disc having the name SAFETY COUNCIL inscribed on it in purple. lt is an honor to belong to a club with such a high standard. PE P CLUB Have you noticed that every Friday our halls have an extra bit of color added to them? This is due to the purple and white uniforms worn by the Pep Club girls. This ever-popular group always seems to be working for the good of the school. Their annual dance which was held last fall raised the money to publish the booklet, Southern Customs. This booklet was issued to all incoming Sophomores. Page 36 They make flashers and sell athletic tickets for the football games, too. Football games are not the only place where the Pep Club marches. Editor-in-Chief Ralph Crandell chewed his finger nails laboriously, while our sponsor, Mr. Owen, ranted and waved his hands in the air. Sports editors Bev. Hunt and Dick Bissell had slightly dazed looks in their eyes fbaby picturesll as Shirley C-esner and Pat Lines, art editors, smeared more lithograph pencil all over the place. Portrait editor Joanie Brncic, played safe by working a different period and faculty editor Beverly Brown followed suit. The deadline for the stories is on one Wednesday, and the Confederate comes out for the public to read on the follow- ing Wednesday. Then the work begins all over again. lt's not all work, though. lt's fun to let others in on the gossip news that you know or write editorials letting the world know how you feel about a current subject. Covering special occa- sions and sports events for news wouldn't exactly be called workl Many future reporters and writers are gaining experience in the journalistic field under the fine leadership of Mrs. C-reenway, the sponsor. Newspaper work isn't quite as glamorous as it looks in movies and books, but pleasant mem- ories will linger with those that have had the pleasure of writing for the Confederate. OFFICE ASSISTANTS ln need of Mercury? Then look up an office assistant! These girls have many opportunities to prove themselves efficient attendance clerks, er- rand runners, typists, and anything else in the realm of reason. But does it really make any difference? No matter how the proposal is worded, it means the same thing. The required Diagnostic English course at South gave no specific phrases such as these to use, but instead, it taught us the ever-important fundamentals of sentence construction. After completing this course we were required to take some other subject in the English category, usually recommended by our Diagnostic English teacher. lt could have been English, American or Contemporary Literature. ln the speech and drama classes we learned the fundamentals of speech and were taught poise and grace. This year we either took College Preparatory English and learned our grammar thoroughly, or Creative Writing where we not only learned our grammar, but also the art of writing all kinds of poetry and prose. AND GRAMMAR Page lO9 TALKIN' YOUR LANGUAGE Page l lO rw. Te! fa What shall l take? Spanish, French, Latin, or German? This was the question we asked our- selves when we first entered high school. lf we were interested in international rela- tions, we took Spanish or French. ln the Spanish classes, we learned about South America, Central America, Spain, and Mexico. ln the advanced classes, several of us developed the ability to speak the language with some fluency. French, too, gave many a speaking ability. lt was interesting to learn the customs of France, along with the language. lf we wanted a language background in the scientific field, we took Latin or C-erman. ln Latin, we got a truly exciting picture of old Rome and the times of Caesar, and really learned our English! In the C-erman classes, we were not only taught to read, write, and speak the language, but we became informed on the political affairs and social customs of C-errnany. ATOMIC HISTORY Let's take a jaunt down to the Antarctic, and then buzz up over the Asiatic continent on our next trip. Such might be the words of history teachers in the not-so-distant future. With the advent of atomic energy, it isn't too far- fetched to believe that our Social Science classes of tomorrow will be that advanced. Just lately, however, juniors have been strug- gling through American History, the only required Social Science course, while we have been filling other classes in the history field to the brim. Topics from the beginning to the end of time were discussed in our classes dealing in Ancient Civiliza- tion, Modern Europe, Pan-American Relations, Western History, Far East, and Psychology. We will use the knowledge that we have gained in these courses to the greatest advantage, in order that we may successfully make Atomic History. Page lll alll FOUR STAR EDUCATION Each of us was required to take General Edu- cation in our sophomore year, this continuing on from junior high school. Even though we didn't meet as a class in our junior and senior years, the fundamentals of General Education weren't forgotten. All of us know and appreciate this subject. As the lO-B just entering South, not knowing where to turn, knowing nothing of the customs and ways of South, we gladly accepted the able help this course gave usi We were first given an orientation course. This was followed by some other course of general interest to a sophomore. When we were in doubt as to what subjects we should plan to take, what colleges we should attend, and how to prepare for the future-our General Education teachers were always right there to give us excellent advice and guidance. DEVASTATING FIGURES All the math books say 2 plus 2 is 4, but why do half the math students come out with the answer of 3? ls it because they don't care, or is it because they just don't know how? To solve this question and help these students is one of the many problems of teaching mathematics. Figures, equations, and theorems are only parts of the countless ways of figuring out an answer to the problems given in these classes. Pi equals 3.14, and this type ot pi is not the kind that we eat, This pi is used in geometry classes, but if we took geometry with the idea of getting something good to eat, we certainly were fooled. Our problems took time and patience to work out-but oh, the satisfaction of getting one rightl Just ask any of us who has taken one of the mathematics-Algebra, Plane Geometry, Solid, Trigonometry, and Math Analysis. Page l I3 Page l l4 SCIENTIFICALLY SPEAKING . The various science classes were all interest- ing and extremely educational. ln chemistry and physics, the experiments we made in regard to the mechanics of fluids, sound, heat, light, and electricity brought many new theories forcibly before us. ln biology we studied not only plants and animals living on the earth today, but endeavored to develop a clear picture of prehistoric life by learning the origin, development and structure of animals. Meanwhile, in zoology we were getting a more complete understanding of animal organisms. By applying knowledge of the vital functions of human organisms, our Physiology classes learned human organisms, our physiology classes learned the requirements for healthful living through the study of human anatomy. Botany dealt with the environment, types, structures, and functions of plants, and their re- lationship to human welfare. JUST THE TYPE Those of us who were interested in the com- mercial field were offered several courses. Among these were Transcription, Typing, Stenography, and Bookkeeping. Some of us took only one year of typing, but if we went on into the second year, we not only gained in typing ability, but learned to use the dictaphone, duplicating machine, and mimeo- graph. Stenography and Transcription were essential to those who were training to be stenographers, secretaries, or to do similar commercial work. Aside from this, however, it became extremely valuable in taking notes on lectures, radio, and other reports. Bookkeeping gave us excellent experience in keeping records in every type of business. Successful completion of any or all of these courses gave us a good foundation for securing positions in the business world. Page l 15 Page ll6 hifi? COOKING WITH GAS: SEW WHAT? One helping of potatoes, two slices of bread, one serving of meat, two different vegetables, and a favorite dessert, mix well, and it all comes out a well-balanced meal, planned by the boys and girls in the various cooking classes. Meal planning for breakfasts, luncheons, but- fet suppers, and evening snacks were taught to us who elected the Foods course. This course provided our training in etiquette, and emphasis was given to dinners, teas, and spe- cial-occasion planning. ln the dressmaking and designing classes, we girls made our own clothes, and in doing so, we not only increased our wardrobes, but developed more skill in the art of designing and sewing. All of us know that while we are learning the home economics of today, each one of us was getting ready for our own tomorrow. CONSTRUCTIVELY THINKING The industrial art courses were extremely help- ful to us who are interested in following that type of career. Busy students were bent over drawing boards, surrounded with compasses, protractors, and rul- ers, sawing out wing sections for gliders, using hand tools and power machines, or learning the mechanics of transportation, production, trans- mission, and utilization of electricity and other power. Several of us held good jobs through the ex- perience gained in this study. But, is it study? Many of us found relaxation from our regular school work by making useful articles, repairing our cars and working with many mechanical devices. As we worked amid the whirr of electric saws and the pounding of hammers, we were not only building things of metal and wood, but we were also building a good foundation for our life's work. is Page ll7 Page l i8 NOTES T0 YOU One of the many outstanding memories that we will have of our years at South is that of being in the Concert Band and Concert Orchestra, under the capable leadership of Mr. John Roberts, We worked hard up in Room 565 to furnish the school with pep at the rallies and football games and with inspiring music at assemblies. Other groups under Mr, Roberts were the String Or- chestra, Training Band, and Second Band. We in the A Cappella Choir did much to uphold South's good reputation by making tre- quent and impressive performances in and out of the school. There were ninety-five of us under the competent direction of Miss Dorothy Wassum, There was also the beginning A Cappella Choir, soon to take our places. Other vocal groups, also under Miss Wassum, were the Ensemble Choir, the Girls' and Boys' Clee Clubs, Madrigal Singers, and the Mixed Chorus. DRAW YOUR OWN CONCLUSIONS The opportunity in South for us who are artistically inclined was excellent. Our art classes dealt with many phases of art. Included in these were sculpturing, drawing, sketching, water color and oil painting, and charcoal drawings. Bending over easels with brush or what-have- you in hand, we knew that we were not only learning to create, but in addition, each one oi us was developing an appreciation of art which will contribute to our cultural enjoyment through- out the years to come. ln the many drawing and painting classes we expressed our moods and feelings with paint brushes, pastels, and charcoal pencils, while in the sculpturing classes we molded them in clay or carved them in wood. Whether we go into artistic careers or not, we will always be grateful for the artistic appre- ciation which we have developed. Page ll9 COLONEL DICKSON SERGEANT SLAY FORWARD, MARCH! The Reserve Officer's Training Corps, which is authorized by the National Defense Act, fur- nishes a great majority of the officers that are required to command our armed forces in time of war. The corps gives military training in both colleges and high schools throughout the country. Some of the achievements and activities of the South High Battalion were the City Cham- pionship which was won by the South High Rifle Team, participation in various parades and cere- monies throughout the year, and the raising and lowering of the flag each day by the South High Color C-uard. Something new in the line of military training was established this year. That was the Honorary Officers from the ranks of South's feminine pop- ulation. These officers were chosen by the ROTC cadets. This corps of honorary officers includes one Lt. Colonel and four Company Captains. The social functions were not neglected either. There was a Battalion dance at each school, an All-City Officers' dinner dance, and an All-City non-commissioned Officers' Dance, which were all held at the Shirley Savoy Hotel. To end the year with a perfect finish, there was an All-City Military Ball for both cadets and officers. Page l23 Page l24 EXER-SIZING UP THE SITUATION Clang went the lockers as gym suits were speedily snatched from their resting places! Such was the beginning ot a typical gym period. Speed demons were in their element here, while the more graceful aspects of physical train- ing were found in dancing classes. The fellows received a thorough working over and in the meantime, their weaker counterparts, not to be outdone, strained and grunted through calisthentics--all for the sake of beauty. The physical education program was broad in outline and backed up by hard-working and well- Iiked instructors. The extra-curricular activities involved were countless, ranging anywhere from our varsity games to ping-pong tournaments in the girls' gym. Taking a last look at the gym left an odd sensation, on one side we saw the brightly dit- terentiatedcolors which garbed the girls, and on the other was a sea of exposed male legs. Besides having charge of football and swimming, he teaches General Arithmetic, boys' health, and several gym classes. Nigs came to South from West in l944 and has worked tirelessly in his effort to build championship teams. Well known to Southerners of the past thirteen years is Garnet Stone. He is noted for being one of the best dressed men at South. Besides teaching several gym classes, he coaches track and wrestling. He claims track as his favorite sport, both for teaching and enjoyment. After a lapse of two and a half years in the Navy, Coach Fritz Brennecke has returned to South. He coached the l942 champion football team, and coaches baseball this spring. Next year he plans to to coach football and swimming. STAGECOACH Things looked pretty low for the South High basketball team after the first two games, but to Coach Finis Ketcham this was a challenge. Coach Ketcham made good his goal. Under his superior leader- ship we won the championship, For his excellent coaching, he was chosen all-city basketball coach. When you think of tennis or golf you think of Coach Sam Wald- man. Both sports under his leader- ship won second place in their prep circles. Rebels know him for his wit, philosophy, and immaculate wear- ing apparel. FOOT Hep, hep, we are marching to victory Hep, hep, we are marching to fame, Fight, fight, is our standard, our motto, And we're out to win the game? Pep, pep, is the rep of our high school, And there's none who can dim her fame! So we'Il fight, yes, we'll fight For the victory, and win the game! To the strains of these familiar words our team got the support of the student body. Coach Mielenz molded a team out of a few seniors and several juniors this year. Even though the team didn't make first, we came in third place. The season started out with a bang by winning both practice games. We defeated both Longmont and Pueblo. We started out the league by beating Manual 33-O. With Perricone fall-city? and Craig push- ing through, we defeated West 26-2. We were tied by North, O-O. Second Row: Quallys, Stratton, Hayes, Blaha, Newlon, Bruner, Leaf, Anderson, Monroe, Cowdery, Grinstead, Gibson, Andrews, Popejoy, Johnson, Yates, Van Schooneveld, Hubbard, Nassimbene, Karbatsch, Dickerman, Mielenz, BALL Our first downfall came when we went up against East. The score was 20 to 7. The second round started out in our favor, again we beat Manual, this time 33 to O. We also won over West 27 to O. Even though our line pushed its hardest and our backfield did its best we met heavy opposition when we were defeated by a small margin when North beat us 9 to 6. Our last game of the season was the Thanks- giving game, Even though our team tried its best and fought on until the last, we were again overpowered by East 2l to l2, Congratulations are in order for the manager, Dick Qualls, one of the most familiar faces on the football team. And speaking for the student body as a whole, we wish to say, Thanks team, even though we didn't win championship, it was an exciting sea- son. Page l3l Page 132 , W-.X 4.
