A CAPPELLA Perfect unison of harmoniously blended voices of many boys and girls is the objective of Miss Loraine Nelson, director of the A Cappella Choir, and, asia result of her earnest endeavor and the cooperative support of the entire group, South's A Cappella has achieved city-wide recognition. This year some of the important issues crowded into their very busy program included a recital, given at the Trinity Methodist Church, a spring concert, a radio concert, and their portion of the commencement day exercises. he ir BOYS' GLEE CLVB Back Row-Sain XYhite, Bob Kzuifmxin. Stagecraft Boys and Assembly Club The exceptional quality of the assembly programs presented to us this year was due to the untiring efforts of the Assembly Club and the Stagecraft boys, as these people planned and staged them all. The groups faced and conquered a rather overwhelming problem, namely that of presenting skits neither purely amusing nor wholly educational. The adept man- ner in which a balance was maintained is bespoken by the fact that the assembly attendance this year surpassed that of any past date. The Assembly Club is sponsored by Miss Ella 'Jane Fellows. The olilicers of the club are: Bill Scheuermann, Presidentg Nancy Eakle, Vice Presidentg and Mary Muth, Secretary. The Stagecraft boys are headed by Mr. Hal Kenclig and work as a unit. qc: 26 as SOCIAL HOUR ORCHESTRA Back Row-Alex Bruce, l'lzn'l:in Miller, XValter Birkerlahl, Dixon Benster, Phil Kilmer, Ray Kemp. JUNIOR and SENIOR PROMS Southern enthusiasm ran high at the elite social event of the year, the Senior Prom. Amidst the beautiful decorations, graceful couples glided to the music of Kayo Lam's orchestra. I Ruth Glover headed the committee which consisted of Kay Grissom, George Wright, Evelyn Dunn, Dorothy Steen, Marion Schlageter, Bob Price, ,lim Bromm, Lawrence Gwinn, George Walke1', Harold Spangler, and Vera Burton. The Junior Prom rivaled its predecessor for loveliness, their theme being an old ,W Southern garden. Then as a gracious touch to further the flower idea, each girl was presented with an exquisite corsage. The committee which handled the affair so adeptly had co-chairmen, Kathleen Aspy and Bill Anderson. The committee members were Alice Moseley, Frances Har- rison, Mildred Bailey, Bob Morris, Victor Schneider, Harry Goodheart, Bob Cummings and Jack Cedarhlade. The tennis team, under the direction of their new coach, Mr. Farnum St. John, boasts a very successful season. In determining who was to play in South's name in each match, the players were seated according to rank. A person might work up the lists by challenging the per- son above him, and if he won, he was automatically raised one seat higher. This procedure continued throughout the week and on the day of a match, the two players who were 'atopsi' played singles. A similar method held true in the selection of the doubles teams also. South played four matches, one with each high school team. Victories were won by the Rebel team over West, North, and Manual, while the only defeat was scored by East. The season ended with East in first place and South following, a very close second. TENNIS f Art Lewis, Jacob Leensvaart. The Rebel mashie wielders compiled the record of win- ning ten and losing two matches. This year's campaign brought forth two promising sophomores in the forms of Orison Smith and Dick Arnold. Smith was the main star of the team and also one of the best golfers ever produced in South High. Arnold started great guns at the first of the season, but had a slump near the end: however, he proved himself very valuable to the team. The juniors on the team were Maynard Blanford and Ralph Clase who shot very consistent golf and helped to make next year's hopes high.
