Sitting'Carroll Hutchins, Fred Coorlale, Virginia Lee. Martha Lawrence, Miss Alice Aronsun, Directorg Bertha Lackner, Eleanor Reese, Ted Davis, Wayne W'ernc!. THE SENIOR PLAY . . . The Amalgamated Thespian Association decided to give 'Camillef and with that decision the settlement experienced the equivalent of volcano and earth- quake. While the women scratched and shrieked over the title role, the men nobly gave their parts away. Handsome but painfully shy Biff looks, when given the herois part, suddenly left for Santa Fe. Two more comely gentlemen followed him when offered the role. Months later that trio quietly returned and resumed house- keeping. 'Camille' had been given fwith an all-female castj weeks agog relieved, these gentlemen once more felt at home. That is probably why Big was so easily cornered one day. From a circle of expectant faces a voice said, ':We're giving 'Romeo and Juliet, and we wondered . . . i' This worthy book comes out before the performance of Big Hearted Herbert, but from the rehearsals our correspondent saw, success will surely perch on Herbs, shoulder. The play is balanced with humor and homey logic, enough of both to sustain interest. There are, of course, domestic complications and amusing situations that promise much. Those that you wonit see but that really deserve more than just these words are those costumers, prop men and make-up artists that every play has and depends upon. After the play words may fail youg but, during the play, if they fail the actors, ,lane Harrison will be there script in hand. Costume supervision falls to Marjorie Line, while the traditional office of props men becomes props ladies with ,lean Hatton and Doris Rhoads doing their best. As for makeup, Judy Easton will wield the puff and eye shadow. Willy Phillips linds the programs and advertising her job. The direction comes from Miss Aronson and Edith McDonald. It is upon these 'cfaces in the wingsw that the play depends. We salute youl l17l .A ,ax JUNIOR PROM COMMITTEE Back Row-Charles Puyne, Jimmie Evans, Helen May Lininger, Chairman, Berton Stackhousc, George Wright. Front RowfNuomi Fahring, Margaret Deel, Margaret Finkel, Bette Lee Bails, Charlotte Mayer. JUNIOR PROM . . . not to be outdone by mere elders, the younger generation blazed forth with a first class barn dance themselves. Swooping down on the opera house they unscrewed the seats from the floorg then, after placing the pianner player and the fiddler on the stage, they swung into a frenzied Virginia reelf, A modern parallel was the Junior Prom. They might have transported the South Pole as a scene for the dance, so real were the artists' decorations. Snowballs, icicles and penguins were on every hand in the gym, but with strange inconsistency, the South Corridor was drowned in palmsrpillows and plants. This, they said, was Southland. Here in Antarctic tropics the Juniors laughed and dancedg here they gamboled and romped in one of the year's most effective social capers. U81 A ,,,,.A . With comets in tin lanterns to shed golden light, they laughed and stamped out rhythms on the rough wood floors to a raucous fiddle. Perhaps they laughed louder than their progeny would on another far of and bright night when young moderns danced on smooth wax to a softly humming orchestra . . .U Amid planetary airs and with the then1e of Lstars, predominating, a galaxy of Southern satellites and their male meteors danced to the heavenly strains of Mars Kramer and his twelve exponents of the melody way at the four-star event of the year-the Senior Prom. In the starring roles Doris Rhoads, chairman of the dance committee, and Charles Adamson, prexy of the senior student diadem, led the sparkling and dazzling array of dancers, who enjoyed a night of starry pleasures. The five-point theme was carried out in the decorations. A huge star, draped with spirals of gleaming cellophane, formed the apex for hundreds of streamers from all corners of the Rebel gym. The programs and the refreshments also carried out the star motive. It was truly a celestial evening in an ethereal paradise. ll'll 'SUV ....,.. 11, .....- 53-ft .. -...--f M , fit, e.-r 1 -wi ' -19 ,4 --5'i-...-. 1 1 4 A CAPPELLA CHOIR Back Row-Neil Ford, Wilbur Grinstead, Travis Railey, Kenneth Flatt, Alda Phelps, Eleanor Earhart, Kathlyn Musser, Victorine Lewis, Miss Nelson, Ann Schuerer, Dorothy Hoffman, Margaret Riemer, Marguerite Spady, Marian Jackson, Robert Rothi, John Jackson, Harlan McElhinney. A CAPPELLA . . . with only the murmur of the breeze through the pines, the gurgle of water, and the staccato crack of fire for accompaniment, the little group sang to the hills and shy. As one voice the melody came from their throats-they sang because they loved to singf' Brilliant growth and popularity has been the reward of this thoroughly worth while group. Starting humbly, it is now grown to a class project through the earnest effort of Miss Loraine Nelson, the director. its seventy members have sung at the Colorado Education Association conven- tion, for the Denver Music Society, and at several other public gatherings, earning much sincere praise. Widening their scope, they performed over KLZ, singing not only four but six and eight part harmony, difficult for even trained adult choruses. GIRLS' GLEE , . . . in the throes of artistic inspiration the women folk dropped their chores and organized a strictly feminine trio. Later, augmented, it became a quartetteg then a sextette, and finally, when a seventh member joined these vocal ranks, at a loss for 759 a name they called it a 'chorus . It remained for their children's children five generations later to develop a full-voiced chorus of seventy. Directed by Miss Loraine Nelson and accompanied by Janice Morton, they accomplished success after success. First in the All City Chorus, during Music Week, then in Don Alonsois Treasure, and finally in the All School Show they displayed admirable training and enthusiasm. Of course, they gave several assemblies and outside programs as periodical outlets for their tuneful art. These, too, were delightful and well received-a statement which goes without saying. l22l -.-..--i 3 BOYS' GLEE CLUB Back Howe lfliner Ruth. Muurive Siklu-ns. And, shucks, a felleris gotta prac- ticefi' Now, those young sons sweat at their drills. The game is no longer play but serious duty wherein they combine mental and physical effort. These boys devise Various stratagems, map out their make-believe fields of battle, and plan new ways to defeat the enemy. In recent rifle matches our Rebel Cadets came in third, competing with more than sixty schools. Later this summer they will participate in an all city drill competition. Chances are South will shine again as victor, for the cadets have as motivation Pop Kohl and Major Combs, the sponsors. Here is the bulwark of a military nationg here is protection and assurance. It was they who had organized this chaos that was now enjoyed by the rustics. Every 'Satidday' they had one of these meetings of the more socially inclined. Windows vibratedg guffaws shattered the silence of the sleeping town. Nine o'clock. This was night life in the early settlement. No exuberance runs rampant at South, for here the Rebels take their social hours with quiet enjoyment. It is probably due to the committee that arranges these dances. These social lights are picked by Mr. Coryg then they do the unusual by elect- ing officers from their number. They were Line l'MarjorieJ, Munn fBillJ, and Watson Uackj for this last year. Of course we havenlt been favored with many socials this semester-the epi- demic, you know-but in spite of this we recognize the merit of the group. The few they have given were well-planned and enjoyable. As a private celebration they started to have a little party of their own- but they just didn,t get around to it. i231 f f if ,Tj I lil l ' E' f f - fx . . .,-,,..,,,.. . . .,,. .. ,...,,- , ff-uw..f yrs- L if'-. FOOTBALL soUTH vs. WEST South versus Westl The most critical grid- iron battle of the 1934- prep season found the sec- ond place Rebels and the leading Cowboys bat- tling to a scoreless tie at the final gun. Several times the West eleven threatened the Rebel goal. only to lose the pigskin on downs or fumbles. A punting duel was waged between Glass, Southern halfback, and Waltman, stellar back on the Cow- boys, team. Late in the third quarter, Glass, attempting to punt out from his own goal, was rushed by four West linesmen, and the ball was down be- hind goal. However, to the utmost relief of the Rebel rooters, all four West players were ruled offside. Glass's next attempt placed the ball in midfield where it remained until the close of the game. South, 0, West, 0. SOUTH VS. NORTH South's fighting Rebels failed to overcome the Thanksgiving Day jinx in their grid conflict with the North High Vikings and fell short of an un- disputed championship to tie with West for that honor. This tie was due to West's surprising de- feat by the Manual Thunderbolts. The Vikings' score came in the third period on a completed pass into the end zone. The South- erners unleased a passing attack in the last quar- ter to put the ball on Northis 5-yard stripe. Butcher went over to tie the count on his second plunge over right guard. Crowning a scintillating season, losing their grip in only two matches to Manual, the mighty Rebel racqueteers brought home to South championship laurels for the first X time in many years. 1 The three singles netmen played very admir- able tennis. Fiery Harold Holland drove his way to remain number one man throughout the season, Manual's Konopka, his lone surpasser. Bert Stackhouse, seeded number two, consist- ently outplayed his opponent from East, but Paul Gill resumed play in his place in the remaining matches, overcoming East and West, but losing to Manual. The two doubles teams, Orange and Reed, Kemmerling and Hazeltine, were the staunch standbys of the year, winning their way through all opposition. Orange and Reed, first doubles duo, superbly volleyed and net-played, winning three out of three encounters. Levy fguard, forward, and centerl : A lot can be expected from this junior who showed up so well in the latter part of the season. He started out as a guard, but Coach Miller shifted him to forward and center. Sam will be remembered as the boy who played all three positions equally well. Munn fforward, guardh : Starting out as a reserve guard in the early part of the season, Billy had little chance to show his stuff. In the playoff game against North, he played as spectacular and fine a game as I have ever seen in high school, says Mr. Miller. His speed and excellent driving power made him an effective ball player. Railey Cforwardl: Matt was the outstanding ball-hustler on the team. Losing the majority of his veteran batsmen, Coach fPopl Kohl built up a new team around his few remaining lettermen: Wes Glass, outfielder, Ray Ander- son, first baseman, Sam Levy, third baseman, and George Morris, an outfielder. The biggest problem for the mentor was replacing his last year's all-city batteries. She was writing to her rash sister who had eloped and, with her newly acquired husband, had joined a wagon train going West. Months passed, spring ripened into summer, and, as autumn blew over the hills, the letter arrived. The event had a startling effect on- the Settlement, especially the receiver's son. One day, going through her souvenirs, the mother found a neat square cut from the corner of that letter with a pen knife. Young Tim had begun his stamp collectionf' When we asked for information about South's stamp club, the members sent us ' two sheets of paper with these staggering words typed in capitals--HSOUTH PHILATELIC CLUB7 You might conclude that this must be a Worthy organization to merit such a man-size Word. Youare right, it is. This is the Old Faithful of all clubs, and South has a worthy one. Many valuable perforated squares go through their hands and past the inspection of their rather expert eyes. They hold regular auctions and trade-parleys as companions to their meetings at which discussions and speeches are made. After that they just talk among them- selves. I 58 1 '6 . . . They always blushed modestly, when complimented, after the show. That is, they all blushed except Hattie Jenks, she, with a stern face, would say, Thank you. We find it worth the trouble. . .N The members of the Assembly Club have no time for blushesg they really work. Their job is to find talent, rehearse them, and give a smooth-running pro- gram. They confessed that is was difficult to get a new and original theme for each assembly, but they manage nicely-very nicely, say we. They surmise that their work of art for the year was the exchange program of March. Elizabeth Suskin had charge of it. They all look at that favorite brain-child with unusual fondness even though it did almost send the troupe away for a rest cure. Phyllis Corry, Delbert Lobb, and Eleanor Reese hold official seats, but in spite of it they really find themselves busy. You see, Miss Fellows is the sponsor. GIRL RESERVES K . . . the Settlement fairly bristled with little clubs and organizations, for there were few that had no pursuitg there were few that weren't interesting because of being interested. There were no distinctions here, for men and women, white and red, young and old-all mingled in a mass enjoyment? The Girl Reserves is a companion club to the Hi-Y. These ladies romp and play much like their Hi-Y friends. Every other week they meet here at South and settle all business. They donlt mind this very much, but what they really like is the fort- nightly meeting at the NYU downtown. There they may participate in drama, art or dancing classes. l hardly imagine they'd admit it, hut I say a large part of that enjoyment is due to the presence of Hi-Y boys who happen to he present at each of these bi-weekly gatherings. They gather in the tower room, and we suppose they hold meetings behind that door. Apparently they do, for there are oflicers: Francis Geib, Robert Fox, Keith Heuser, Bob Schwartz, and Carroll Doyle. This year, with the Girl Reserves, the club gave a party for the orphans of the Denver Orphans' Homeg then they kicked up their heels at a party of the All City Clubs, and also at another, this time a private affair for just the South sector. SENIOR ACTIVITIES . . . the town was bustlingg it was the social season, and holidays were com ing in bunches. Catching the fever, everyone found something to do. It just wasnt acceptable to Society to be indolent. There was no sport, amusement, or hobby that had no followers. In this fervor the Settlement had its first banquet, and, at the same time, a monthly paper came into being. Ah! This was advancement! In this heated activity the Settlement stepped from its infancy and earned the name-Villageli' It seems that upon their arrival into the Senior Class of 1935 many people began to work. With a feeling of creative pride she dipped her crude pen in the watery ink-and wrote. Quietly she poured her soul on paper in blots, scratches, and wavering linesf, And quietly Folio Leaves pours its inspirations on paper. Poems, stories, and plays all Hnd their way into existence through this club. And masterful are their strokes too, as is this lovely poem: SKY SVVEEPINGS I shall hold life hard against me And run and run And not look back, But standing high upon a hill With my soul stripped bare and shining to the sky I shall fling back my head Bravely And laugh up at the stars, Until in quiet surprise their slarmlust falls And sinks into my heart. L'ACADEMIE FRANCAISE . . . little Huck came home from school with a twinkle in his eye. Condes- cendingly he did his chores and with an air of precocious adulthood sat down at the supper table. 'Thetis French fer rneatf The silence continued, then Ma said in a low, very awed voice, 'My goodness! Huck ya kin speak a foreign langwichl, Composed of advanced students, the French Club has done much to enhance South's reputation as a home of new ideas. There the language is not merely studied but applied, as the students read novels, write a newspaper and take imaginary trips to France,s provinces. As double climaxes, the club held a dinner-dance, and, far greater, Mrs. Combs will take a group to France this summer. French students, whose low finances threaten to keep them from going abroad, count and recount their pennies. REBEL CLUB K. . . the Settlemenfs first touch of exclusiveness came when the boys announced their X X X Club. No one knew what it meant, everyone wondered, and the boys themselves tried frantically to devise a meaning in case they were forced to tell. With a new name the club jumped wildly forward in achievement. They had a dance, they took a New Year's basket, bulging with food, to old Mac down on the river, and they mended several toys for the 'littul kidsf Benevolence made them happy, and in this state they admitted, to the club, persons previously barredf' These fifty Rebel lads are not so exclusive, and they do more things on a large scale. List to this: two all-school dances, two successful assemblies, the annual Santa Claus Shop, and the annual dinner. Special note should be taken of the golf and tennis trophies the club gave to the school. This encouragement of inter-scholastic events in the two fields is one of the fine things of the year. Many times this was thought of, but it was the Rebel Club that finally went into action. Action! That is the Rebel Club! Instead of having the students work for seats, he'd grade them with A's and B's and--and Cisf Yes! This was an idea! . . .M At South, too, they are carrying out an experimentg theyire waiting to see if it's noble. The theory is that special privileges given a selected group will make leaders of them. Then they, in turn, would influence the student body. The idea is good, and it is being executed with deft strokes. Already the wheels of the organization are turning, and the results are encouraging. Although now tentative, this writer feels that it will soon be a permanent part of South and a goal for aspiring Rebels. l75l 4 Y 7774-M1 S AFETY COUNCIL Back Row-Bill Mowbray, lim Baier, Joe Enarson, Sherman Dctrick, Henry Fischer, Edmund Cressman, Dick Miller, Jim Baugh. SAFETY COUNCIL N. . . law and order became scarce, riots and corpses were plentifulg the Set- tlement was in a bad way. Suddenly fear glowed in Crirne's ugly eyes, for Justice spoke from guns, mouthsg social vengeance became a strand in the lynching noose. Silently organized, the vigilantes had come bringing restoration of peace. Once again the citizens enjoyed nocturnal snores in place of shotgun solos. . . Though the Safety Council doesnit cope with crime, they have another prob- lem just as serious. lt is this group that solves South's trafiic problems, interior and exterior. They see that the much persecuted pedestrians donit run over each other in our halls. Truly a unique yet very real problem. But thatis not all. They check lockers, have fire drill, and put on various assemblies. As a result South has the assurance of safety and in the case of emergency a planned procedure for everyone. These boys too, have social inclinations. As you suspected, they gave a dinner- dance in the middle of the year. In case youave never seen one of those lads, they wear white jackets with purple decoration here and there.
