1 THE COUGAR 1965 Dentsville High School Columbia, South Carolina Volume V FOREWORD It has been our privilege in presenting this volume of The Cougar to portray the essence of dignity, loyalty, sportsmanship, and the quest for knowledge that is Dentsville High School. In it we have tried to depict the spirit of unusual friendliness which is traditional of Dents- ville students. To our fellow classmates, it is our fondest wish that this volume may ever guard the treasured memories of our high school days against the ravages of time. To other readers, we sincerely hope that its contents may further one’s understanding and appreciation of the love we share for Dentsville High. CONTENTS Faculty and Classes Organizations Fine Arts Athletics Honors Student Life Advertisements THE COUGAR STAFF Mrs. Shaw, Mrs. Horton, Zoe Ann Bus- house, Mary Castles, Robert Coleman, Rita Dixon, Lynn Driggers, Karen Elder, Rachel Fellers, Steve Foster, Marsha Givens, Lyn Henderson, Phyllis Hendrix, David Murphy, Hugh Oldham, Gaye Theus, Becky Thompson, Jack Walker, Donna Whalen. DENTSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL SEAL It has been our honor to present to the Dentsvilie High School student body a seal which we feel represents the fine character and scholastic leadership of our student body. The torch is a symbol of knowledge and represents learning. This applies not only to the students at Dents- vilie but also to the faculty that guides us in attaining our education. The two masks of comedy and tragedy represent the fine arts. The drama club, and the band, art, chorus, and speech classes with their attendant clubs would be typical of this symbol. The winged foot with the Roman sandal portrays excellence in our athletic program and the toil of hard work and fail sportsmanship demanded by it. The charter and gavel are representative not only of the clubs and organizations at Dentsvilie but also of our elected officers and student government. The key in the center stands for the success and opportunity afforded Dentsvilie students as they grow up to adults capable of bearing the responsibilities of citizenship in their community, city, state, and country. Fur- thermore, it represents the key to a growing school, and that is our growing community. Our school mascot, the Cougar, is a representation of the student body. It is only fitting that the Dentsvilie High School Cougar should rest on our motto, Semper Fidelis - Always Faithful. it is a loyal thing you do when you tender any service to the brethren. Ill John 5 R.S.V. In sincere appreciation of your patience, diligence, and sympathetic interpretation of the thoughts of youth ... for your unswerving devotion through your hard work and concern for the betterment of Dentsville High School, and fair play in every phase of high school life . . . With admira- tion, affection, and esteem. The Cougar Staff proudly dedicates The Cougar of 1965 to ROBERT D. SAXON. i t ■50 f y' b ROBERT D. From class to class we travel, always taking on new knowledge, always conserving the old. 11 . . . Enthusiasm is a heartfelt thing; without it we lose a sense of loyalty and pride in our school. Whether we are enjoying a pep talk by the coach, working together on a school play, campaigning for our favorite candidate, or striving for the honor roll, we are inspired by enthusiasm. As young people this zeal is important in our lives, for it often helps to cultivate the clear-thinking, spirited citizens that the modern world demands. the awakening spirit of learning . . . Our world of today is progressing faster and faster. To compensate for this advancement, we must all learn the new methods employed in various fields, consequently broadening our education. At one time or another, we all enjoy the lust of recognition. the vibrance of challenge Challenge is to the mind as calisthenics are to the body. Today's high school offers many challenges, whether they be on the athletic field or in the class- room. Encouraged by the stimulation of competition, we strive to attain our goals through vigorous practice, dedication, and perserverance. We yearn; we strive; 17 we accomplish. Administration F acuity Classes MR. EDWARD U WRIGHT Superintendent A.B., Wofford College, M.Ed., U.S.C. MR. HARRY R. PARONE Assistant Principal B.A., U.S.C. Mr. E. L. Prior to his coming to District Two, he served in the Navy in World War I, and had twenty-three years teaching experience as a history instructor and coach in several fine schools and colleges in the South. One of Mr. Wright's many outstanding achievements is the compilation and editing of a Social Studies film of South Carolina. In addition, Mr. Wright is an avid historian and participates in many historical societies throughout South Carolina. Mr. C. E. Young, who was principal of E. L. Wright Junior High School for one year, has been principal of Dentsville High School for the past two years. It is striving for the achievement of long-sought goals and aspirations. One's senior year is special in this respect. It is the culmination of all these efforts. Grad- uation is the horizon of our high school days. We stand here in our caps and gowns and clutch our diplomas tightly, feeling proud, yet overwhelmed with nostalgia. Walking through the cor- ridors for the last time, we glance backward once more, only to hear the echoes of our resound- ing footsteps. Never can we experience that portion of our youth again. But we are not mel- ancholy, for the future is bright and we are ready for the challenge life presents. 28 ANNE ABERNATHY Fashioned so slenderly young and fair STEPHEN ADAMS Smooth runs the water where the brook is deep LOIS EWART ADDISON Silence is a fine, jewel for women BETSY KAY AIRS In friendship I was taught early to be- lieve OSCAR ALLISON A regular fellow, it is true; full of pep and mischief, too BONNIE ALMAND Her life is many a hope and aim Seniors SANDRA KAY ARNOLD A kind heart is a fountain of gladness GILBERT BACO An honest man's word is as good as his bond FREDERICK L. Absent from picture is Debbie Catoe, reporter. On Becoming Juniors We are proud to have entered at last the realm of upperclassmen. Now we are awakened with a fresh enthusiasm and eagerness as we face new responsibilities and challenges. We must continue to set a good example for underclassmen and at the same time prepare ourselves to be the leaders of a growing school. Club activities, candy sales, college boards and the Junior-Senior Prom fill the lives of each junior. This year has been a momentous one, for we have matured in mind and character as well as in body; and, in doing so, we await with great anticipation the zenith of our high school career. We have prepared ourselves and we are anxious to meet our final challenge.
