m. omecominej Queen Linda Scholl was selected as the 1961-1962 Home- coming Queen. Judy Bostic was chosen Maid of Honor. Candidates for this honor are nominated by the football team, and the winner is elected by the student body. After being crowned by Mr. Gibson, Linda was pre- sented a gilded football by the team. For the second consecutive time, auburn-haired Lynn Porter was chosen as Miss Flame to represent Dentsville during Fire Prevention Week. In addition to this title, Lynn has been Dentsville's candidate for the Miss Sportsarama title and Miss Dentsville High for 1961. 45

The Daughters of the American Revolution offer a certificate to a senior girl having outstanding qualities of dependability, leadership, service, and patriotism. The faculty chooses one of three girls nominated by the senior class. Miss DAR represents the school in the State DAR Good Citizens Contest. 711164 Miss FHA, Delores Edwards, was selected by a com- mittee of senior FHA members on the basis of interest in homemaking, personality, moral standards, and participation in FHA activities. Any FHA member is eligible for this award and winner receives a FHA pin. 44

David Givens and Tim Abell have been declared Semifinalists on the basis of their scores on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). These outstanding seniors are among 10, 000 other Semifinalists throughout the nation. In the 1961-62 Merit Pro- gram there were 119 Semifinalists representing 48 secondary schools in South Carolina. All Semifinalists have the opportunity of obtaining a Merit Scholarship and becoming a Finalist by substantiating their NMSQT scores by a college entrance examination. DeLaine Byrd and Linda Scholl have been honored for their high per- formance on the NMSQT. The students have received formal Letters of Com- mendation signed by Mr. Gibson and the president of the National Merit Scholarship C o r po r a t i o n, John M.. Stalnaker. These students are among 25, 000 others who also received Letters of Commendation. Together with the Semifinalists, the com- mended students constitute less than two per cent of all secondary school seniors.
