Maybe this won't be just another year, after all! 3 I.C.T. Program Established The Industrial Cooperative Training program is a joint effort of schools and employers in business and industry to provide on-the-job training which will prepare students for employment in areas of their interests and capabilities. It requires one or two years of training in industry supplement- ed by in-school related instruction. This program brings together the work forces of the community and the school in an effort to teach and train the students to acquire a salable skill upon completion of high school. While I.C.T. is designed primarily for students who are not planning to go to a university or college, a student may arrange his courses to meet college requirements and still take advantage of the I.C.T. program. I.C.T. class uses video-tape for self-evaluation in job interviewing practice. 'L County Begins Remedial Math Labs The remedial Math Lab program, under the supervision of Miss Denise Lacky and two aides, Mrs. Sherry Plummer and Mrs. Brink Loflin, in the high school, and Debbie Brooks and Mary Ruth Moody, in the elementary school, was begun in the Davidson County School System to assist students who have experienced problems in basic math computation skills. The Math Lab is designed to individually instruct each student through a series of skills by which he remediates himself to grade level. of MU it fi, xr: 5 F Y 3 'i , ? Q03 , - 5 2 5 . Y , . Child Care Services is a laboratory-type occupational training program for advanced Home Economics students. Participants learn about the types of jobs involving child care and development, the scope and nature of such jobs, and responsibilities assumed by teacher aides. Experience is gained through student observation, participation in supervising and assisting children with personal habits and with creative play activities, and creating and conducting activities which promote social, mental, and physical growth of children. Some of the specific activities done were the making of toys, games, bulletin boards, and Christmas crafts, preparing children for lunch and naps, conducting playground activities, reading stories, doing clerical work, changing diapers, and rocking and burping the babies. Sponsored Fall Festival With Students Having Greater Responsibilities + ll! , , l , One of the items purchased with proceeds from the Fall Festival was a new copying ma- chine. This machine aids Mr. Miller in sending off transcripts as well as helping other staff members in copying materials needed. Students Gain Experience Assisting Teachers Begun last year on an experimental basis, a program was expanded this year in which students assist teachers in grades K-12. At the beginning of the year the students and teachers fill out a contract specifying the various duties to be performed by the students. Upon satisfac- tory completion of this contract, students receive a unit of credit. More important, the students learn about working with children and gain a better understanding of some of a teacher's responsibilities. fi! wal Members of boys' basketball team work to help pay for new uniforms and warm-up suits. Some of the highlights in- cluded the Christmas dance. Dana Carroll, escorted by Bill Sigmon, was crowned Christmas Queen. Tamara Lanier, escorted by Keith Garner, was Maid of Honor. Santa Claus made his annual trip to the Christ- mas assembly, where both the religious significance and old traditions were brought into perspective by skits and singing. Another annual event, the Beta Club Christmas party, was held. The faculty was given a Christmas party by the cafeteria workers. Even with the new looks at DHS, the familiar tradi- tions were alive at Christmas. in O i ff' I .wx I K9 r ' yi, fl Dedication When the members of the Senior Class were asked for the nominee for the dedication, the decision was not difficult. When one sees his smiling face, warmth and affection fill the air. His great sense of humor follows him wherever he goes. His helpful attitude shows his true Raider spirit, for he is always involved in the work of the school. While short in physical stature, he is extremely large in the affection of the student body. He helps out in any type of project around school ranging from setting out shrubs, to repairing school furniture or lending tools so others can repair their work. We can think of no higher tribute to pay to any teacher than to be able to say, He is a true friend! Therefore the 1978 edition of the PHOENIX is proudly dedicated to Kep,,' MR. RONALD KEPLEY. Most of these things pictured are very familiar to us now, but will we remember all of this five years from now? The new look consists of the physical improvements along with new faculty members. All of these make Denton School a fun and exciting place to be. The old consists of traditional elements found in any school. We want to bring back the many fun-filled experiences that friends share together. As my Senior year draws to a close, I have many memories which I do not want to forget because these have been an important part of my life for the past twelve years. I hope the years to come bring happiness and joy to everyone. We W 5 'Wi in E. 5 5 1 i, i V .4 2. .S if , . 5. i1 if , V. 9 1 -. 4.-f S 33 A ' 'iw E . s N. --1 Sri- A1 A A I u A 1
