The 1959 PHOENIX has been compiled and edited for the teachers and students after many hard hours of work by its staff. We have tried to use these few pages to capture some of the golden events of our lives. These will be ours forever. The Phoenix has an interesting history with which each of us should be familiar. The first successful attempt to have an annual for Denton School was made in 1934. Each senior prepared his own annual by glueing pictures and typewritten material on the planned pages. lt resembled a scrap book with a paper back, more than an annual, but it was the beginning. In 1941, THE HI-LIFE, which somewhat resembles our modern annual, was published with a hard paper back, with Mimeographed print, and photo- static reproduction of pictures. The HI-LIFE of 1942 was the same type, and the pages were still printed on one side. The name of the annual was changed in 1943 to THE FEENIX as the result of a contest. The following editions of the FEENIX were improved, and in the late forties and in 1950 the FEENIX was published with anon-padded cover and with metal binding rings to hold the pages together. The 1951 FEENIX was the first annual to have padded covers and sewn binding. In 1952 the title was changed to PHOENIX. According to the diction- ary, the Phoenix is a miraculous bird, fabled to live 500 years, to burn it- self to death, and to rise again fresh and young out of its own ashes. Hence it is often an emblem of immortality. The 1953, '54, and '55 editions of the PHOENIX were similar to the '52 edition, but each was improved. The 1956, '57, and '58 editions of the PHOENIX increased the number of pages and continued to acquire a more polished look. We, the present annual staff, have strived to improve the appearance and contents. We sincerely hope that each succeeding senior class will endeavor to perpetuate this publication and will conscientiously strive to improve upon what we have done in this, our 1959 PHOENIX.
