MCCRAY HOLMES Sponsor DENNY ROGERS The Senior Class did not feel that this annual would be complete without the picture anda few words about Denny Rogers. Denny was our cla s smate and friend for nine years, and we were deeply hurt by his death in the summer of 1953. To the memory of Denny, our Senior sec- tion of the annual is dedicated. 611155 Song fIn tune of I'll Be Seeing You j We'll be seeing you, The time for parting now grows nigh We'll rerninisce and laugh and cry Of memories gone by. Games and plays and fun and work That we have shared, The friends who've always cared. We say farewell to teachers dear We thank you very much We never would have made the grade Without your patient, loving touch. The time is drawing nearer When in our works of later years We'll look on Denton High We'll always remember you And now we say good-bye. Class Songwriter: Nancy Tillotson if , M fi Q A X J Glass Poem We bid farewell to Denton High, The place we love so dear, Our teachers, schoolmates, and our friends So loyal through each year. To the Juniors we leave this thought: They conquer who believe they can. You may not think you have a part, But in life each must take his stand. Our places now we leave to you: We've tried to do our bestg Where we have failed, may you succeed- We leave to you the rest. Our teachers and our parents, So loyal and so true, Our faith to face the storms of life We owe to God and you. Twelve years we've been in school But now we must depart: In future years we'1l all look back With cherished memories in each heart. Clas s Poet: Pearl Cook Hlass History To misquote the words of that great conqueror Julius Caesar, whom we so dilligently, if reluctantly, s t u di e d, our high s chool years can best be surnmedup by saying, We came, we saw, we conquered. True we have come, we have s e en, and we have a 1 m o s t conquered that, which four years ago, seemed so unreal and far- away - graduation. But let's review a little. At the beginning of our r eview we see 50 students entering high school as green Freshmen. We realize now how much truth there was to that word green. Butwe also see how, unde r the guidance and leadership of our sponsors Mr.A. M. Snider and Miss Virginia Miller, and our class presidents, Jim Futrell and Carolyn Surratt, we progressed, slowly but surely. Too soon our Freshmen year was over, and we we r e leaving for our summer vacations, to return as silly Sophomores. Our feelings were a mixture of happi- ness and grief as we returne d to s chool our next year - happy to be returning, to once again be with our friends and classmates, but unhappy over the death of our friend, Denny Rogers, who passed away during the surnmer months. Realizing however, that we are not to un de r stand the why of everything we began or- ganizing our class. We chose as our class president, Linda Stokes. With her help and the careful guidance of our sp on s o r , Mr. Coit Rufty, our Sophomore year was soon in full swing. As the va rio u s clubs were organized and we b e c a m e part of them, we began realizing that we really were s o m e b o dy. The days seemed to flyby and as another year came to an end we were startled by the fact that we we re jaunty Juniors. CLASS FLOWER White Rose It was during our Junio r year that we began to think about our careers - knowing that soon we would be making our own way in the world. Mrs. Sara Smith, our sponsor, and Johnny Huffman, our class president, led us through, what we feel now was a very successful year. Highlighting our year was the trip Unde r The Seas, which we invited the Seniors and faculty to take with us, the great moment when we Shogk The Fgily Lge, and the hustle andbustle which accompanied the arrival of our rings. Then the last exams faced us, and we soberly watched the S e ni o r s come forward, one by one, to receive their diplomas - knowing we were to take their places as the Senior Class of 1956. September l, found 33 of us back at s cho ol, happily united with friends and classmates but sorry not to see those who were Seniors the previous year. We were overwhelrned by the new faces in our halls and wondered if we would ever learn all their names. With Mr. McCra.y Ho lm e s as sponsor and Larry Taylor as c la s s president, we began the final lap. Our hour s this year, we soon found, were e xt r e m e 1 y full, with holding offices and belonging to clubs, but that suited us, for after all, we were members of the Senior Class. You've heardit said, all good things must come to an end. With that in mind we, as a clas s and as individuals wish to say, thanks for all you've done for us, to Mr. Holmes, our spons o r, to Mr. V.O. Jones, our principal, to our friends and especially to our pa r e nts, who have ma de our education possible. Now we, the Senior Class of '56, leave you with this thought, They Conquer Who Believe They Can. Having appointed our class advisor, Mr. Holmes as our sole executor of this will and testament, and inthe witness of he and the Senior Class, I, the testator, have set my hand and seal on this the 19th day of May in the year 1956. Class Testator: Carolyn Surratt 611155 Prophecy ' As I hurtle across the continent on a super- sonic t rain to a luncheon appointment in Los Angeles - the sound of an old, familiar tune floats down from the ceiling. In this electronic age, music comes from every- where. It's Almo s t Tomorrow brings back memories of my Senior year, 1956 - it hardly seems it could be '76 already. Suddenly, I'm startledout of my daydreams by the sound of a voic e calling peanuts, p op c o r n, sandwiches, and I discover to my surp ri se the voice is that of Larry Taylor. He finally gave up his engineer- ing degree. Right behindhim comes Henry Glover, conductor , As I hand him my ticket, he tells me that mo st of the class of '56 is on the train. D.e c i ding to visit them all, I set out to explore the train. In the first car, I discover a whole troupe of c i r c u s performers, traveling to their next engagement. After talking to Hazel Wilson, lion-tamer, Luc il l e H e dr i ck, burlesque queen, and JohnnySnider, strong man, I walke d into the next car. Some- thing s w o op e d down over my head, and I looked up to see Goldia Spivey and Charles Staley, rehearsing for the i r new trapeze act. After finally getting out of that car, I stumbled on, discovered myself in a rich, private car - filled with servants and money. In the middle, I see Sara Carroll figuring to see if her 30 million dollars a year is still rolling in. No - she never married, she's a career girl. Sara and I sat downfor along talk, and she told me of seeing a new group of singers, the Larkspurs singing inthe rhythm and blue s r evue . We're real proud of this group, they're all from De nton - Nelson Doby, Karen Adams, Bet Willia m s , and Graham Davis. MarySurratt was mistress of ceremonies at the revue, and was a grand success. As Sara. and I were talking , there was a muffled explo sion and three of the cars jumped the track. Upon investigation, we found the caus e of the explosion - Jerry Griffin is still working with his Chemistry set. His wife and eight daughte r s were pronounced unharmed by Dr.Helen Snider. Helen was so impressed by the work that do cto r s did on her leg, she became one herself. A construction crew, consisting of Rowland Garner, Tony Parker, and Richard Smith rushed to the site, and soon had everything under control. Charlie Yokley drove by in his Charlie Car, a sports car of his own design, which he s ells by the billions. From Charlie we learnthat Ross is alead- ing manufacturer of womens' girdles - he learned how to make a new style at State. One of his best customers is Linda Harris, strictly a housewife, who finally lost her tiny waistline. G e tt i ng back on the train and underway again, I decide to go on to the dining car - I'm hung ry , as always. The food is de- licious and upon inqui r y, I'm told that it was p r e pa r e d by Pearl Cook and Carol Grubb, internationally known chefs. Carol only cooks for the train when her husband is traveling, and takes the eight kids to her mother. Going into the club car, I find a large picture c o v e r i ng almost all of the wall, and the a r t i st still at work. Nancy Tillotson is busy doing a life-sized pic- ture of Imogene Walker, nationally known society leader. Imogene is known for her brilliant, formal, and well-planneddetails. Hearing mo re confusion along the line, I rush to the backjust in time to see a tramp being thrown offa freight car. The culprit is Jim Futrell - he lost all his money in a crap game, and is now a full time bum. Sidney Little come s to the rescue, how- ever, andoffers Jim a job in his lace fac- tory. Sidney does all of the designing and most of the knitting himself - he has a small but exclusive business. We finally arrive at Los Angeles, and as I get off the train, I run smack-dab into Joe Carroll, who is now principal of a girl's school. Joe is returning Mr. and Mrs. Holmes' eight daughters to their farm - Mr. Holmes andhis nine sons are out hunt- ing and fishing as usual. There at the train I am met by Linda Stokes, internationally known movie star. I came to have lunch with Linda alone, but I find she is constantly shadowedbyJohnny Huffman, her publicity agent. Johnny has done much to he lp Linda on her way to fame. While we are eating, we are also joined by CarolynSurratt for a conference on co stume s fo r Linda's next picture. Carolyn has achieved her life-long dream of designing sports clothes, and now designs e x c lu s i v e 1 y for Linda. On week-ends, you'll always find Ca r o 1 yn at her horse ranch. As for me, I'm still doing just what I'm doing now - writing. Clas s Prophete s s- Nancy Carroll , I. ,I Seuiar Statistics In our annual are pictures of the Seniors and facts about the Seniors - but here are some facts that you may not know, and may find more interesting. In appearance, our girls average 5'3 llZ tall, and their average weight Qso they sayj is 109 pounds. Their eyes are blue and their hair is brown. Our boys average 5'- 10 , weight 152 pounds, have brown hair, and hazel eyes. Even though they look like this - they prefer their girls to have black hair and brown eyes. The girls agree with the boys for a change, andprefer boys with black hair and brown eyes. So girls, rush out to get your Slim - X , and boys, order your Cha rle s Atla s Muscle Building Course today- be popular. During the week, while attending school very faithfully, the girls claim to like Home Economics best, and the boys can't seem to agree on any one subject. There are two independent souls however - one boy v ow s his favorite subject is girls, and one girlprefers Bobby. They all get together on one thing however - Mr. Holmes is their favorite teacher. After s c h o ol, at their favorite hang-out, they p r e f e r popular or rhythm and blues music. But when it comes to favorites they seem to go for the slow and sentimental side - such as Love is aManySplendored Thing, Unchained M e lo dy, and I'l1 Never Stop Loving You. At night - basketball games are the major attraction for everyone, and you'll find re- presentatives of our cla s s among both teams, cheerleaders, andfans. On Saturday nights, Qand nights when there are no ball gamesl you'll findmost of us at the movies - the Lantern, the West-49, the Midway, the Lexington, and the Badin Road. They're enjoying the movies KU, of course. When asked about their favorite movie - they'll stammer, stutter and finally come up with The Blackboard Jungle. It seems that some of our class see this movie every Sat ur da y night or Hoot Gibson and the Sheriff's Daughter. They all seem to go for Rock Huds on, Marlon Brando, June Allyson, and Jane Russell. The girls also gofor the late James Dean. Regardless of their preference - they always have fun! ! Just a nytim e , you'll find us looking for clothes or just about anything in our favorite color - it's a toss-up betwe en blue and g r e e n . But that independent soul is still around, looking for their favorite color - red. You'll hear our favorite expressions too - from Beats me, to Good gosh , to What it are ? On Sunday you'll find the majority of us at the Methodist Church - but everyone's at church somewhere. On Sunday, we have our most serious thoughts, and while we were thinking along these lines, we were asked to name the person we admired and r e sp e c t e d most on earth. There were answers ranging from Dwight Eisenhower to Billy Graham - but a ma j o rit y chose Rev. McCray Holmes. As for the future of our class,a majority plan to go on to some form of schooling- a good many to college, studying to be every- thing from a me chanical engineer to a journalist. The r e is also a. large group which plans to attend business college. As for the rest, most of the boys plan to be in part of the armed services, or to work, and the girls to get married andfor work. - , l XM . ,AN , gi Zigi? Many long, hard hours of planning, worry, andwork have gone into putting together into a few pages a year of life at Denton High. All this has been done to give you a record to keep forever of a wonderful year in all of our lives. To Mr. Jones, and the faculty, we wish to express our appreciation for their co-operation and patient acceptance of our many requests which often disturbed their work. To the Delmar staff, we acknowledge a debt of gratitude for answeringour many questions, and making a good annual out of our confused ideas. To the students,we say thanks for cheerfully helping us to capture in pictures all your activities. To Mr. Holmes, we give our thanks for patiently listen- ing to all our troubles and snarls - then calmly straightening them out.
