“
Your staff got to wondering about the word Feenix” and what it meant. Their cur¬ iosity led to a conscientious search for its significance. They found no word spelled Feenix but did find the word Phoenix”. According to the dictionary, the Phoenix is a miraculous bird, fabled to live 500 years, to burn itself to death, and to rise again fresh and young out of its own ashes. Hence it is often an emblem of immortality.” Your staff decided to change the spelling of our title and to use the Phoenix” emblem. I dreamed it was the year 1965. Two ladies all dressed in white came walking toward me. At first, I was amazed. They came nearer and nearer, and at last I recognized them. And lol Imagine my surprise as I saw before me the class of ' 52. Of course, the ladies in white were none other than Audrey Harris and Norene Varner, who were nurses at Johns Hop¬ kins Hospital in Baltimore; and following close behind them was Doris Yates, who was dietitian at the same place. Next in line was Ronnie Buzhardt, who was Master of Ceremonies of the Uncle Zeke Talent Show. Appearing on last night ' s program were Jackie Wood, Allen Fine, and Colon Terrell, known as The Three Musketeers. They scored a great sensation by their new version of Mule Train. Who do I see here? Why, it ' s my old pal, Hope Hunt. She tells me that she is a lady wrestler. From what her friends say, she has a good chance in the Ladies ' World Championship Series. Before me stands a stylishly dressed lady. Goodness, if it isn ' t Alreta Snider, who owns Al- Sider ' s Dress Shoppe in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her leading model is Frances Hall, whose good looks and personality have won her many friends throughout the city. Here comes a handsome gentleman bending as if he is studying footprints. Of course! Its Sidney Lanier, detective for the Z.B.I. Standing near him, leaning against a super-atomic model car, is Wayne Keith. This is the first car Wayne has de¬ signed, and it seems to be a hit. It ' s called the Keithoallac. Well, look who ' s here! It ' s that famous skating couple, Nancy Garner and Joanna Snider. They own and operate the world ' s largest skating rink, which is located in San Francisco, California. Edith Craver, typing and shorthand star of the Class of ' 52, is their secretary. Here comes a slender young girl with very little hair. You guessed it! It ' s Lina Belle Lamar, head lifeguard at Daytona Beach, Florida. Thus far in her career she has rescued ten people. As I turn around to see who is singing behind me, I come face to face with Billy Ann Mitchell. She ' s the rising young star on Broadway and is at present playing in the musical hit Othello. This fine play is written and directed by none other than the prominent Dorothy McDowell. In the group I spy a very intelligent looking person. Upon investigation, I find it is Alletta Daniels, Professor of English at the University of North Carolina. She has just written a book on this subject which will be used in all public schools. Talking eagerly to Professor Daniels is Peggy Morris. I find that she is the official buyer for all M. A. Pickett ' s fifteen stores. This must be quite a job, but Peggy has had lots of experience and takes it all in her stride. I am now being introduced to the North Caro¬ lina Farmer of the Year. Would you believe it? It ' s Ralph Carroll. He owns a 500-acre farm in the heart of Handy. Standing nearby are Reece Hed¬ rick and Bernard Ferrell, who own a large dairy in Georgia. They ' re really raking in the dough, from what I hear. Looking very happy indeed is my old pal, Kate Floyd, and I soon hear the reason why. Her girls ' basketball team. The Lucky Ladies, has just won its tenth straight game. If they win their next game, which is to be played in Madison Square Garden, they will be declared Ladies ' Basketball Champs. Peering through the crowd, I see a young lady dressed in a blue uniform. Well, fancy this! It is Wynell Frank. She tells me that she flew out to California to visit her brother and liked flying so much she became an airline hostess. Among her recent passengers was a former classmate, Jane Harrison. Jane, after graduating from Oklahoma University, has been doing research work on cures for Charley-horses. She flies to France to con¬ tinue her study next week. Now I see before me four children, all hanging onto their mother ' s skirt. Of course, the mother is Mrs. Leon Russell, the former Betty Jo Hopkins. The way Betty straightened out those kids made me think she would have made a grand school teacher. Smoking an expensive cigar and looking very pleased with himself is Don Morris. He is a chain store owner, having Morris Grocery Stores in five states. Not bad, Don! Chatting away gaily, I see two popular mem¬ bers of the Senior Class of ' 52. They are Betsy Stokes and Mrs. Johnny Coppley, Jr. Betsy has been pursuing her talent for art at the Columbia University in New York. One of her latest paint¬ ings won the Lane Scholarship, donated by Mrs. Mary W. Lane, of Denton. Sara is a career wife. While Johnny is away in the Navy, she takes care of Connie Sue and Johnny, 111, and writes novels in her spare time. Her first novel. Make Mine Chocolate, was highly praised by New York critics. Well, here ' s our old friend. Bill Scoggins. He says that he is playing professional basketball in Texas. His foul shot was the winning point in the important game last night. Coach Bill Ross was well pleased with him! Imogene Beck tells me that she is a beautician in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I understand she owns her own salon and does a thriving busi¬ ness. Just around the corner an old classmate, Betty Jo Seabolt, runs a coffee shoppe. Her dough¬ nuts fairly melt in your mouth. Now I see before me Bud Buie, who is boys ' coach at Duke University. His football team is undefeated thus far in the season. Nearing the back of the group I find my old friend and neighbor, Margie Snider. She likes school so well that when she finished college, she came right back and took Mrs. Lane ' s place on the Denton High School Faculty. And now Mrs. Lane, who was so good to us as a teacher, is doing just as grand a job as mother to five adopted boys. Suddenly I was jarred into reality by the shrill whistle of an approaching train. I jumped up quickly and my books fell closed. I realized it was about 3:00 a. m. for the H.P.T. and D. was flying by. All my classmates had vanished as the last sound of the train faded away into the dis¬ tance. What a pleasant dream I had had! Margaret Hedrick Class Prophet Having concluded that the history of any high school or college class is not simply the narrative of four years of school attendance, I will give my version of what constitutes our history. Looking back into the years, we find our high school career influenced not only by our contemporaries butalsoby preceding classes and faculties. It bears the trademark of teachers, past and present, the imprint of students who have frequented these halls and classrooms before us and left their influences for good or bad, and the memories of teachers who introduced certain customs for this or that. Behind our history, also, are the teachers who taught long hours for scarcely any pay; the rugged pioneers who cut the native pines for lumber and built the first crude schoolrooms, the minds who looked into the future and longed for greater educational opportunities. Behind us are those who have labored long and endlessly for more and better schools. Our class drew strength from these thoughts; and with this strength we, fifty-five green Freshmen, entered high school in the foil of 1948 determined to add our bit, however small, to the history of Denton High School. Under the supervision of Mr. A. M. Snider we soon outgrew our green ways and entered into the activities and routines of the place which has held such an important spot in our lives. Before we knew it the nine months had come and gone; we found our¬ selves Sophomores. A few of our classmates did not return with us that year; but we were joined by others, and the wheels turned on. What torture those Biology quizzes were, and how we wasted paper writing 30-page themes in Ancient Historyl However, with the guidance of Mr. George Lyndon, we survived with only a small amount of damage done. As our Junior year progressed, we began to feel and work more as a class. All of us realized that graduation was not far off, and we wished to make those days glorious ones. Our class rings were ordered and received, and they have become cherished possessions. We took the Seniors and Faculty on a very enjoyable trip down the Mighty Mississippi on our own Showboat . A few weeks later we went, with our audience, out West to visit the Angel of Red Canyon . Both of these events were highly successful, thanks to Miss Linda Wilson, Class Sponsor, and Betsy Stokes, Class President. Time marched on, and so did we! Those summer days were all too short, and we returned for the final lap, this Senior year. Only thirty-six proud, undignified Seniors assembled here. Billy Anne Mitchell was elected President, and she has guided us through many memorable events. Now our days of fun and schooling at Denton High are over. As a class, as individuals, we wish to say thanks to Mrs. E. O. Lane, our Senior Sponsor, to our parents, our many friends, and especially to Mr. Huss, without whose help this day would not be possible. We hope your efforts and the efforts of those before you have not been in vain. We leave to the School, to you, and to the memories of those before us our sincere gratitude and devotion. JANE HARRISON, Class Historian. SENIOR CLASS DENTON HIGH SCHOOL DENTON, NORTH CAROLINA 1951-1952 CLASS MOTTO Not for Ourselves But for All CLASS FLOWER Red Rose CLASS COLORS Light Blue and White (Tune: Look for the Silver Lining) Farewell dear Denton High School As graduation time now appears. WeVe worked together for many years And now we’re having to part With sadness in each heart Our teachers have been so thoughtful As they have helped in all our strife We’ll always remember each friend we’ve made here And may you have the very best in life. Joanna Snider, Class Song Writer. If you’ll closely look upon my cheek, I think you’ll find a tear, You ask me why you saw it there? You’ll find the answer here. The time will come when we must go And leave old Denton High; The reason for my sadness is— This time is much too nigh. To our teachers we are grateful. They have shared our work and fun; And now we only hope that we Have left no job undone. This dear old school has been our ship. And we have been the crew.
