These people don't belong to a clique or a crowd. They do their own thing: each per- son is unique in his own way. These people are the teachers, the secretaries and the administrators of our school. They're essential to the smooth operation of DHS. Just think what trouble we'd be in without someone to sell us football tickets, to tell us where what's-his-name is during which period, to help with transcripts, to tell us what hall to walk down, even to answer the phone. What about those who sew up ripped pants or mend a button that's come off a shirt? . . . s 1 . . . These people are our confidants and our personal secretaries at the same time they're our substitute mothers. Whatever they are, they' re indispensable. Their influ- ence is felt now, with quarter exams, term proiects, tardies, encouragement and clis- couragement but their real impact on us will not be adequately felt for several years. The new English mini courses caused crowded, confused conditions in the English room and bewildered sophomores going through registration for the first time added to the chaos. But by 12:30 of the last day, the halls started to clear, the counselors started to breathe sighs of relief, Mr. Tonn gathered class load cards, and students filtered out, ready to begin a new school year. A losing battle, 20-2l, with Wichita Falls did not detract from the excitement of the yearly festivities. The dance, held in Hubbard Hall at TWU, was only a part of the exciting evening. The Home- coming parade added appeal tothe action. Hall decorations, float proiects, float winners, Drama, DECA and lCT, and the Carnival all made the week one to remember. A broad grinning, peanut farmer from Georgia nar- rowly edged out the incumbent President Ford to win the Presidential election. The closely fought race cov- ered a variety of issues, among them the stagnant economy, unemployment, defense budget, amnesty, and the Nixon pardon. Amid the general concern over violence and crime, convicted murderer Gary Gilmore became the first man to be executed in the U.S. in TO years. However, the fact of their misfortune stems in part from their inability to play consistently, and by inconsistency the record distorts the sometime brilliant play of the enthusiastic Broncos. lf the Broncos could have put together two good halves in four of the close, winable football games that stub- bornly fell in the loss column, they would have turned around the 3-7 season. In district play the Footballers' 2-4 mark tied them for fourth with L.D. Bell. The few senior representatives of the team stabilized and strengthened the junior dominated team. Seniors Donnie Devereaux, Steve McNeill and Gary Neu provided leader- ship and made the quick, explosive offense go. Whereas, Forrest Purser, Larry Garrett and Tommy Herron bolstered a stubborn defense. The youthful inexperience may have been responsible for many mistakes this season, but the 4l return- ing players will provide Coach Shipman with the depth, the experience, talent and the disciplined ball players needed to mold the Broncos into a winner. A margin of three points separated the Running Denton Broncos from the second- half 6-AAAA crown and a possible district championship. After the '77 edition of the Broncos and Coach Ted Gillum, in his maiden year, defeated Trinity, 76-73, in a Purple Pit barn-burner and then iourneyed to Wichita Falls to clip the Coyotes 57-55, the Bron- cos placed their four game winning streak and their share of the second-half lead in ieopardy as they traveled to meet the sharpshooting L. D. Bell Blue Raiders. Bell's Ray Flash Radcliff constantly ripped the cords in the first-half for 15 of his 20 points as the Raiders eased to a 19 point lead at one time in the second stanza. The sluggish Broncos closed the deficit to 42-32 at half. Down by 12 with one period to play, the run and gun Bron- cos outscored their opponent 24-13, but the one point difference, 74-75, marred their record and forced the Bron- cos to defeat the front running Rider Raid- ers at home for a possible tie for the sec- ond-half championship. The Broncos trailed by six at half as Rider out ran the Running Broncos. The Broncos district hopes faded as they would get close but were not able to take advantage of key situations, and therefore dropped the 69-67 decision. The Broncos' season ended early as the two squeakers diminished the 16-15 season into memo- ries and if's. Led by smooth Stafford Counts who averaged 15.2 points for the season and district, even though his last three outings were sub-par, the Broncos were never blown out as they played close and enter- tained the sparse crowds. Counts was named to two all-tournament teams, the Dr. Pepper and Kiwanis Invitational. Ball handler Mike Williamson pumped in 10.9 per game as the senior guard played his best game at Bell, netting 25 points. Larry Lucus averaged 9.1 per game as his quickness was a primary Bronco asset. Junior Johnny Pate contributed 10.0 points per game, and Coach Gillum will depend primarily on him and Leo Hudson for next year. The other Bronco starter, Bruce Goodner, had a strong start as he was the dominant factor in the winning season. The Broncos depended heavily on their bench, including Kelly Mayo, Robert Mohair, and Tim Foster, as team effort pulled out many a close ball game. 221 Broncos Dewfeafr I W.F. Ending the season at 15-14 with a win over Lewisville, the Ponies should be able to give helpful support to the Broncos next year. Sporting o starting lineup of Mike Behning, Chris Van Dyke, Phil Neely, Zane Wilson, and Bill McPherson, the Ponies started the season hot, and until the skid at the end of the year, were a power to be reck- oned with. Other standouts for Denton were Chris Robinson, a fine outside shooter, and David Slater, a speedy player who often found his way to the basket. Mike Behning and Barry Bridges grabbed many N X rebounds over the year and Chris Van Dyke's defense aided greatly. Phil Neely and Zane Wilson quarterbacked the club and should play a maior role in the Broncos plans for next year. f- ,V A JUNIOR VARSITY: KNEELING: David Slater, Coach Simpson, Zane Wilson.
