STANTON-Coach Mr. Stanton's record as a good coach continues to be appreciated by the student body of Denton High School. He did good work this year in making an able eleven out of almost new material. The grid boys of Denton High School have great confidence in the abilities of the coach. He inspired his team with the highest ideas of fair play and sportsmanship. Denton High Sehool's athletes have developed wonderfully under the coaching of H. V. Stanton. HAROLD HAMILTON-Captain It has been said that Cobbs is one of the best men ever produced by the high school. His ability to stop 'em has marked his brilliant career as a football player. During the past season Cobbs was in there fighting and could be depended upon at all times. He knew the game and inspired his team-mates with fight and a desire to win! Cobb's place, left open by graduation, will be hard to fill, but we know that some college will get him and look back upon D. H. S. as a school that developed real men and football players. Page Sixty-five SAM WYNN-End An end should be fast, strong, active, a great pass catcher, and a sure tackler. Sam is no streak of lighting, but he is strong, active, and aggressive. He can catch passes, tackle, and block as well as could be expected. An end should never be off his feet or swept out of play. If either of these disgraces ever befell Sam, our memory does not recall it. Such was the stuff that made one of the Broncos greatest endsmen. We lose him, to our regret, through graduation. EDGAR GILES-End Regardless of the fact that this is Red's first year at football he showed the real stuff. Being tall and able to handle the ball well, he was shifted from guard to end at the first of the season. Red could receive passes well, and because of this ability most of the passes were directed to him. He tackled hard and was a good dependable man in general. Well Punyl' was one of those fellows. Owing to his experience and weight he was shifted from his regular position at guard to tackle. He was fast and shifty, a good fighter and hard to take out of play. This was his last year with the Broncos. h BOB HARRIS-Tackle Bob played his first football this year. Coming to us from the Cooper Creek School and being in good condition Sleepy made the team the first year. He is big, fast, aggressive, and has lots of the old fight and determination which are the essentials of every good player. He will be back next year. MORRIS BIARD-Guard Freshman is another man who had a previous year's experience with the game. He was heavy, a steady, consistent player and probably one of the best running guards on the team. Tabe has shown himself to be one of the best linesmen ever developed with the Broncos. Tabe's speed, clever tackling and perfect blocking got him into every game, and at no time did he fail to carry his share of the burden both offensively and defensively. NORRIS RUSSELL-Center This man is Norris Russell from Pilot Point, Texas. Rusty is a flawless passer and a wonderful defensive man. He has the ability to diagnose a play quickly and to tackle surely. He has as much flght as any man can have and still stay in the game. Rusty or Snooks, as he is better known, played hard and clean football and always played for the team. He has another year with the Broncos. Page Seventy ui 'i ' Q P HESTER B1sHoP-End Heavy's second year with the Broncos was one of success. He was a good pass receiver, fast, tackled hard, and was good on both offense and defense. He has the ability to size up a play quickly and could be depended upon at all times. GLENN REDFIELD-Tackle Montana Upon looking at Bull one could not fail to think that he would make a good football player. You guessed it. He made a steady linesman. Most of the men whom he played against expected a tough opponent and they were not disappointed. In offense his speed enabled him to open many holes and his defensive play was above reproach. A good guard is of great value in modern football and Montana was just the type for use in interference. This is his first, and last year with the Broncos. Page Seventy-one CHESTER BROWNING-Half Checker was another new man on the squad who set about to make a record for Denton High, and he did splendid work. He could always be depended on to get his man. He is also fast and good on off-tackle plays. He ripped through the line for gain after gain, ran beautiful interference, and passed accurately. We know he will be good next year. JACK SKAGGS-End Jack is another end who is little but loud. He could receive passes well, had lots of the old pep and fight, fast on, going down after kicks, covered punts well, a hard worker and one who loved the game. Jack was the smallest man on the squad this season, but with the growth of a year and the experience had during the past season he will be a valuable man for the team next year. Page Seventy-two 1 V f 'E7'l ?n'?f'fli9i'75W' fifliiff' W 5 1 in 1fl.'f -K-. x REED COSNEY-f-Quarter Jew may be little and one would hardly think that he would make a football player, but looks are deceiving. He can do anything in football. His accurate passing, blocking and punting were an inspiration to the team this year. He was especially good on the defense and in retaining punts. Jew is another one of those football players who has the backbone to tight 'em. He is another good man we lose through graduation, but we can say that he did his part for Denton High School. SHELIE GRANDSTAFF--Fullback Shelie was one of the smallest men on the squad-in size only. He was a regular demon-and had it not been for injuries he would have accomplished much more than he did. Shclie is another new man on the squad who is going to develop into a great back. He is keen, alert, fast, aggresive, a conscientious trainer and splendid on defenseg really he is a natural born athlete. If he will only stay with football he'll make a real player. Page Seventv-three FRANK MITCHELL-Halfback Frank was going like a tornado until he broke his arm during a scrimmage. He is fast, a good fighter, and a ram at hitting the line. Although Frank did break his arm he fought 'em While he did play and won one of those things that only good men can obtain-a letter. GORDON CALHOUN-Halfback Jasper was somewhat handicapped by his size but he is a good all-round football player. He could follow interference well, and tackle hard. He will be a hard driving halfback for some college next year. HARPER KNIGHT-Halfback This is Harper's second year on the squad. Because of transfer he was ineligible last year, but with the experience he obtained he became a good man this year. Harper was probably the fastest man on the team. He was a concientious worker, and learned quickly. In football today a fast starting back is an asset to the team and Harper was one of those backs. The place he leaves open by graduation will be hard to fill. When he did come back Hoots improved the Denton offense and secured the tip-off more rapidly. Haren still has two more years to play with the Broncos. NIMROD BORCHARDT-Forward Bogie is playing his first year with Denton High. He came here from Lake Dallas High School for which he almost single handedly won the class C championship last year. He lacked finish because of insufficient experience on a team in the class of Denton High but is a valuable man. Borchardt knows the location of the basket and in recent games has led his team in scoring. He shoots best, it appears, from difficult and closely guarded positions. Page Seventy-eight A we 11,7 w A , MARKAY WAGGONER-Guard Markay Waggoner, Hoor guard, letter man last year, is the dribbing artist of the Bronco quintet. His handling of the ball, his speed and his ability to take the ball from the opposition makes him a valuable man. Waggoner also is fairly accurate on long shots at the basket and usually is good for two or three field goals during an evening's play. Waggoner also graduates in June. ELBERT MARTIN-Guard Flux was one of the best defense players on the squad this year. His timely long shots did much toward winning many of the games. WENDELL WHITEHEAD-Forward Sheep, a junior with about two more years in Denton High, is a flashy forward on the Bronco team. Because of the ineligibility of Smyers, H. Haren and Martin, he got a real chance this year and he has been standing up under lire remarkably well. His speed and his ability to recapture the ball make him a valuable man. He also is a good shot and when he gets hot there is no known method of stopping him. He was a substitute last year. CHARLES BROOKS-Forward Charles Brooks, senior, came here from Golden and is playing his first year with the team. He was particular strong defense, and he divided time at floor guard with Waggoner. He also played center, and in one of the Mineral Wells games he showed up exceptionally well. Brooks was another one of those players who did best when pushed a bit by opposition. As the season ended we find that he proved his worth even more decidedly. 3, T ff.-Q f , -..M fl .1 :ming 7-71-14,-,4 ,rl Y, - 'rx . 4, . , 'o ' ee '- ' f for as ft ll . fv f5fW'fieeTff?''4fW'Kf'O2'ffiQ.' .. ,jg KL-O. . w.-- , -'.f.'rf ,Q ' '41 Page Eighty-one .f H1 1. 1 .x. He was a persevering kind of fellow and trained hard, if its not basketball that he's working out for, its track. Jerry made a capable understudy for Red, and shared the knocks with Manager McGraw. He has another year with the Denton Broncos. ORBINE MCGRAW-Manager - Through two years of hard basketball Orbine has managed the Broncos wonderfully. He not only takes excellent care of the high school's basketball material but shares the knocks with the boys as well. He also comes in handy when the boys have some surplus energy. Orbine has served faithfully for two years and to our regret graduates in the spring. Page Eighty-two 5 ,M , 1, 74, .. 'Tzrfc 'Til l. It is patterned after the National Society which stresses in its organization Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. The Scholarship basis is this: A student to be eligible for membership must have made a grade of BH or above in all courses pursued for the six weeks period. Service: Others First, Self Last . Leadership: Ability to follow as well as to lead, to command the loyalty of others, to master a difficult situation, and to make things go. Character: A student may gain recognition in character by meeting individual obligations promptly and completely, and by being honest, courteous, and reliable in all of his dealings. 4 f Page Eighty-eight Y F.. . ,.: 1 I f,,, Hi-s ,M- nv .RN 5s c,,j,f:! .. ,, egmvaegg W -1 J, fffifr L QI WT! Many students desire to get in the clases taught by these young ladies because they are easier than the regular teachers. The iirst game was between the Sophs and the Seniors in which the Sophs were trampled upon. The next game was between the juniors and Sophs in favor of Juniors The third game was won by the Seniors over the Juniors. In the next game between Bill Martin's Sophs anrl the Seniors, the Seniors were trampled, as no Senior team ever let the Sophs beat them. The most interesting game of the contest was between the Juniors and the Sophsg the score was tight and both teams lighting hard until Norris Russel, Junior Forward, got Hhot . The final game was played between the Seniors and Juniors in which the Seniors, as usual, were victorious.
