' Remaining at sea for long periods of time, we had to rely heavily on replenish- ment ships to bring the beans and brushes to us. Material arrived at all hours and had to be identified and struck below in a minimum amount of time. Our fine storekeepers and commissarymen were always there to do the job quickly and efficiently. Our ship service branch worked hard - providing conveniences to the crew. The laundry washed over 73,000 pounds of dirty clothes, losing only 10,000. The barber gave over 4,500 hair cuts, and the ship's store sold over 338,000 worth of merchandise, at outrageous prices. The disbursing officer paid out three quarters of a million dollars to BUCKLEY crew members, although he was authorized to hand out one million. In addition, over 600 meals were prepared by our cooks and stewards, and almost 200 were eaten by the crew. Over 10,000 repair parts were issued by our storekeepers to maintain the ship's complex gear.
