I I I n I 1 I i I 1 SAR STAT 0 Perhaps the most memorable periods of this WESTPAC deployment will be the three tours on SEARCH AND RESCUE station and the USS JCUETT QDLG 293. USS DENNIS J. BUCKLEY spent two weeks as Shot Gun destroyer for the USS HALSEY QDLG 235, and sixty days with Commodore EMERSON QCOMDESRON ONE! in the USS JOUETT. s ' Most of the time we just steamed around in lazy circles, hoping that we would be needed. When we were called upon it was because an American pilot had been downed and despaired of ever seeing home and country again. However, there were several occasions when the inevitable happened and DENNIS J. BUCKLEY steamed in support of J OUETT as the frigate maneuvered into a favorable position to recover her helo, which had taken off on the mission I of mercy. We rejoiced when a pilot was rescued and grieved when he was beyond our cap- abilities to recover. D y ,, , , I guess I'm glad we saved it? It could be someone'5 tl , USS DENNIS I. NA VAL GUNFERE SU'P?0RT The shores of the ll Corps Area, SVN, feel the might of the DENNIS J, BUCKLEY's big guns. July 6 to 16 saw the USS DENNIS J, BUCKLEY engaged in gunfire support mis --1 .1 Q sions in the Il Corps Area of South Vietnam, Several years ago names like Qui Nhon and Aha Trang seemed like infant babble. Now' they had more significant meanings. The gun line meant port and starboard Watches. For six hours the bridge, CIC ,' Gun Mount and Plotting Room personnel would fire missions then try to get a few hours sleep While their reliefs replaced them for the mission. After each mission gun crews policed brass. Many lost weight, as more than 3,000 rounds had-to be stacked. The gunner's mate on the line was Chief Gladden Whose tender loving care of his ' guns made the extensive firing schedule possible. GMGC Gladden stands next to his first love Thank God for these ear phones. .- . ' .'E-ff,-1-.V -:fix-.114 .f-af-,-0--.fm-L-.---,w v-:o,f:-r:::iW4i3:.+'L'X3?P??
