I I I n I 1 I i I 1 SAR STAT 0 Perhaps the most memorable periods of this WESTPAC deployment will be the three tours on SEARCH AND RESCUE station and the USS JCUETT QDLG 293. USS DENNIS J. BUCKLEY spent two weeks as Shot Gun destroyer for the USS HALSEY QDLG 235, and sixty days with Commodore EMERSON QCOMDESRON ONE! in the USS JOUETT. s ' Most of the time we just steamed around in lazy circles, hoping that we would be needed. When we were called upon it was because an American pilot had been downed and despaired of ever seeing home and country again. However, there were several occasions when the inevitable happened and DENNIS J. BUCKLEY steamed in support of J OUETT as the frigate maneuvered into a favorable position to recover her helo, which had taken off on the mission I of mercy. We rejoiced when a pilot was rescued and grieved when he was beyond our cap- abilities to recover. D y ,, , , I guess I'm glad we saved it? It could be someone'5 tl , USS DENNIS I. The Bird Farm seems ite to steam along unmindful of the Small Boys rolling and pitching in the wake of her own smooth EM ill: course. For the DENNIS J. BUCKLEY carrier operations marked the first time the ship participated H in combat operations with her present crew. This is what we're in the NAVY for stated the Executive Officer's Plan of the Day. Speeds up to 27 knots were the rule for the DENNIS J . BUCKLEY during her time with USS BONHOMME RICHARD ICVA-319, USS TICONDEROGA QCVA-147, USS CONSTELLATION QCVA-649, and USS ENTERPRISE QCVAW-655. On 22 February as the first high Winds swept ' across our decks, the BONNIE DICK launched her aircraft for strikes against the enemy. The H lin BUCKLEY had arrived. I if lm . -R pr 1?
