They don the navy jacket, they wear the navy blue, they live aboard a tin can making up her crew. If you were only here with me on this moonlit night, I'm sure you would be speechless at the silent sight. The navigational running lights are giving off a glow, like a halo casting to the sea below. Some folks like big ships and some like submarines, but listen and I'll tell you what Destroyer means. She's silent, she's deadly and built just like a dream she's very well respected where ever she may steam. She may ride like a bronc or sometimes like a swan, she can race the night thru then try to beat the dawn She can turn on a dime and even leave a tip, people I tell you she's not just a ship. She's the work and sweat and toil of many a great man for this is what it takes to make up a can. If trouble starts by some chance and our country goes to war there isn't a doubt in my mind a tin can I'll ask for. For when it comes to battle there is no comparison she'll fight like a tiger and never turn to run. She'll spit hell and fire whether enemy on air or ground then show them the difference tween fight'n n' fool'n round. If she's hit and starts to sink you'll not hear a cry r for the men that make her crew are not afraid to die. And if by fate or hand of God we're all sent to the deep I'd like to remain with her there for my eternal sleep. Some sailors may not feel like this many will disagree some that read this poem will doubt my sanity. What more can I tell you what more can I say, if you've never been a CANMAN you'll never feel this way. So ask the man with a DD patch with me, I'm sure he'll agree no finer ship was ever manned or will ever sail a sea. Bud Nelson SM2 USS DENNIS J. So no mention of that will be made this year. Fur- thermore, there is no truth to the rumors DARE sleeps behind the 53 that SCHAFFNIT is married, that PALMER'S Subic honey i still loves him, gor that JACKSGN bought a cruise book. No matter what anyone says, FISHER's baby was really the eighth, TOWNSEND did not ship over only for the money, WARD doesn't let anyone ahead of the chow line for a cigarette, and neither TULLAR nor SAYERS has a short-timers attitude. Credit goes to McCarty for making third class, BREWER fdr drawing the title page of the cruise book and HERMAN for being a Polock. We have the highest praise for J OHNSTON's drinking ability, WILLIAM's family and DI ANGELO's hangover. Good luck to KRICK on his third class exam and COLLINS on his first baby. GREGG just rolled another Ensign and turned in a chit. Mr. GESELL took care of WA Division and Mr. CARPIEN took care of the cruise book. ' Remaining at sea for long periods of time, we had to rely heavily on replenish- ment ships to bring the beans and brushes to us. Material arrived at all hours and had to be identified and struck below in a minimum amount of time. Our fine storekeepers and commissarymen were always there to do the job quickly and efficiently. Our ship service branch worked hard - providing conveniences to the crew. The laundry washed over 73,000 pounds of dirty clothes, losing only 10,000. The barber gave over 4,500 hair cuts, and the ship's store sold over 338,000 worth of merchandise, at outrageous prices. The disbursing officer paid out three quarters of a million dollars to BUCKLEY crew members, although he was authorized to hand out one million. In addition, over 600 meals were prepared by our cooks and stewards, and almost 200 were eaten by the crew. Over 10,000 repair parts were issued by our storekeepers to maintain the ship's complex gear. PARKS QDD-8849 set off to Midway Island on the second leg of the transit.. Several days after our brief stop in Midway we joined the USS BONHOMME RICHARD QCVA-317 and the rest of our task group for the cruise's first underway replenishment with USS PLATTE QAO-247. No more 'than three hundred feet separated us from the BONNIE DICK as we witnessed our first aircraft launches of many we were to see in the next six months. An- other refueling from BONHOMME RICHARD on the thirteenth and the USS DENNIS J. BUCKLEY arrived at Subic Bay, Philippine Islands. We were more than five thousand miles from home. Nextlday we were out to sea again con- ducting local operations with the BONNIE DICK. The first helo detail was set at 1159 that morning. Two-hundred fifty later we were to be back home. 5 -4 -AS-45-:.?2f1E -2-' ' 9 J , . S 9 0 . . On 22 February the BUCKLEY joined with BONHOMME RICHARD on Yankee Station in the Tonkin Gulf, and became Screen Commander. Now station the plane guard detail , became the order of the day, as we chased the carrier around the gulf, during her flight operations. As rescue destroyer for the carrier we took off in search for a possible downed pilot, joined by USS TRUXTUN QDLGQNI-353 and USS ZELIMA QAO-495. Fortunately, the pilot had landed safely in Danang and our services were not needed. But the crew as a team, functioned very well. On 1 March the BUCKLEY pulled alongside her favorite oiler USS PONCHATCULA QAO-1485. We were to have many happy UNRE PS with this pearl of the fleet. By 9 March we had bid farewell to the carrier and pulled into Subic Bay once again. After a period of extensive upkeep and liberty, the DENNIS J. BUCKLEY steamed out of Subictowards Danang, Vietnam. Rende zvousing with COMDESRON on '7 aboard USS HALSEY QDLG-23J,BUCKLEY then conducted training operations off the RVN coast. A dense fog greeted the two ships as they arrived at South SAR Station on 22 March, to relieve USS JOUETT QDLG-295 and USS SOUTHERLAND QDD- 743J . The first vessel alongside was the JOUETT'S Motor Whaleboat, searching for the mother ship in the low visibility og. USS DENNIS J. The first class always said they could conn a ship as well as any officer. From SSAR on 6 April BUCKLEY joined USS ENTERPRISE QCVAQNJ 657 to fill in for another destroyer with a casrept boiler. One day with the ENTERPRISE and it was back to Subic Bay. In Subic COIVIDESRON 1, our own Commodore Emerson, met us. We were to be very close to the Commodore during the next few months. It was in Subic where we were paid a visit by the Deputy 'Inspector General, and BUCKLEY crew members found themselvesface to face with an Admiral, a true inspector who was very pleased with what he saw aboard BUCKLEY. April 18 found us back on South SAR, this time with the JOUETT,and COMDESRON ONE, with whom we were to spend our- next two line periods. Aside from eleven days of upkeep in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and a few days in transit, DENNIS J. BUCKLEY and JOUETT steamed together for sixty days. Needless to say per- sonnel on both ships got to know each other very well. Frequent exchange visits were paid by each ship. Each came to know the working of the other. Whenever JOUETT and BUCKLEY were not engaged in a search and rescue mission they conducted exercises and maintained a constant state of readiness for any eventuality. There were many times when the ships set general quarters in expectation of air attack. Extra watches were set when the possibility of hostile helicopter actions existed. 53 wmmp .mm get ff ffsa- ' Q Ex 1. ,.
