Class Prophecy Whlle spendmg a quxet evemng at home after a hard day of teachxng at Denmark Mxss Butler swxtched on her televrsxon set and the announcer s voxce boomed forth wxth Vt e wxll now take you ten years xnto the future She sat there IH drsbelxef as a pxcture began to come on to the screen It was Melvxn Douglas head of the Douglas Research Laboratorxes Mr Douglas expla1ned h1s theory on how to cross breed chlckens and mllk cows to create an ammal whtch would glve eggnog He started these experlmentatlons whlle ln the F F A at Denmark As the next scene came 1nto focus tn the offxce of the Douglas Research Labor atorres ln New York she saw two former students one typtng for all she was worth and the other busy transcrlbxng short notes What two people were so xnseparable but Jean Hampton and Nadxne Bradford Are you surprised these glrls who certaxnly don hate boys aren't old marrred women by now? Vlfell just lxsten Jean brought up the subject of the man she was wlth the precedlng evenmg and Nadme shouted 'That guy acts hke he was ralsed 1n Arkansas and couldn't get used to shoes but take Harold for example You take h1m nobody else wants hlm exclaxmed Jeanxe He 15 so stuffy and xntelhgent lf you don t thxnk he 15 smart just ask hmm As the plcture faded l wondered whether these two would ever decxde on fmt husbands for each other Next the screen turned to the Mountams IH Arkansas we saw a hunter ln a coon skln cap and atttred rn burlap wtth no shoes shoot1ng rabbxts Hrs face was barely vlslble under a heavy growth of whrskers out of whlch peered two twmkly eyes whlch couldn t be mxstaken for anyone but Jerry Slegrxst better known as Tex ns rn charge of a bzg Conservatxon Department xn Texas he scene came to focus ln Tampa Florlda where we saw Dorothy fhesnut the mult1 mxllxonatre owner of the famous Swxng and Sway the Chesnut Way Ball room She was strll the same old Dorothv But even nn 1961 the same old Vlolfe was strll hanging around her door I s the next pxcture came into vlew Miss Butler saw the large New York Depot In the crowd she recognlaed two more of her former students Esther Carson and M r1on Longcor Thexr luggage was covered wxth stxckers from all over the Unxtfd States showlng that they had traveled a lot ln thmkxng back Mxss Butler remembered that both of thexr boy frlends had worked on the rarlroad and probably as thexr husbands now they had secured raxlroad passes for them Before the next ptcture cleared up Miss Butler could hear a famlhar gxggle Then she saw Edrth Sawyer who had just won the Natxonal Gxgglmg contest for the thtrd t1me There were representatlves from the large Mov1e Concerns trylng to get Edlth to sxgn a contract to be in pictures She attrlbuted all of her fame to the practrce she had whxle tn hxgh school Next on the screen flashed one of the brggest truckmg companies ln the Umted States In the offxce rs George Hartley and hrs wrfe as the secretary the former Llla Llngenfelter Mlss Butler reahzed from the group of boys runnmg around the desks that they were trymg to raxse a famxly of truck drlvers The flnal scene came xnto focus and who should appear but Marllyn Haskell the former vlarllyn Meller racmg around a race track xn the stock car races w remember her as berng good at up settmg cars m her hxgh school days Jean Hampton Melv1n Douglas IZ . . l , . 1: ' ' .
