Digitized by tine Internet Arcliive in 2015 littps : arcliive.org details adytum 1 965adyt DENISON GRANVILLE, OHIO NINETEEN HUNDRED AND SIXTY FIVE ADYTUM VOLUME 72 This is Adytum ' 65, your yearbook, an attempt to capture in pictures and words at least an echo of the year that has been a very important year for each of us because it belongs under the heading College Days. Adytum, the innermost or secret shrine of ancient temples, seems an appropriate title, for these pages tell the story of a special time in each of our lives. Here at Denison we have the opportunity to tap the innermost thoughts of the great minds of history — to absorb, to wonder, to question, to doubt — yet always to stand in awe of the glory of man ' s intellectual achievements. But college is also a place to experiment and grow in other ways, to come to know oneself as a unique individual with much to offer society and to understand and appreciate other people as partners in the search for meaning in life. The four years we spend at Denison can constitute one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives, yet we must not allow our relative isolation on college hill to blind us to the realities of the outside world. Only if we keep in mind both our future goals and present obligations will we be able to look back with joy and satisfaction to our days here. Each building structure on Denison ' s campus represents something to every student — a place where friends are made, study is carried on, knowledge is acquired, business is transacted, grades are received, and God is worshipped. Kill the Beast! Slit its throat! Spill its blood! Denison ' s own version of Golding ' s classic? No, it ' s just the annual rush on the Sig house — better known as Derby Day. Profs may pout, Molly may mutter, and Whistler may bulge, but undaunted coeds still struggle gleefully for the treasured chapeaux. Later events at Spring Valley brought the D.G. ' s first place honors (?) . . . education has many faces. 6 The controversial issues and candidates of the 1964 Presidential elections sparked a great deal of enthusiasm on campus. Weekly articles in the Denisonian, active campaignirig by the Young Democrats and Young Republicans, and spontaneous, informal debates clearly showed the students ' lively interest in the world of national politics. Hold That Tiger One of Denison ' s most treasured traditions is that glorious day of unexpected (well, relatively) freedom ushered in by the halting strains of Hold That Tiger. This fall the Freshman Sophomore Tug-of-War took an unanticipated turn as the scrappy sophs dunked the mighty frosh battalion. Blue skies and snappy breeze ... a great day for picnicking, dancing, racking, booking, or even heading for Newark. 1 f L. ■ Perhaps it is to recapture for a short time the magic of being twenty, carefree, and oh-so-won- derfully wise that hundreds of Denison alums return to their Alma Mater each year for Homecoming. The colorful excitement of the annual parade down Broadway, the battling Big Red football team in action, the Ugly Man contest, the crowning of the Queen ... a time for remembering ■ ■ 4 10 Virginia Geneser Homecoming Queen Kappa Alpha Theta 11 12 Every college has a center or hub around which campus life seems to revolve: a place to take a study break, meet friends, read the latest bulletins, check your mailbox, or even write a term paper. Denison is no different. 14 There is so much more to a college education than simply lectures and books. We learn as much from each other as from all our G.E. courses combined; for man is a social animal who desires to talk, to discuss, to argue, to listen — to understand and to be understood. Nightfall. . . and a hush falls over the campus. But the stillness is laden with concentration and creativity. Education is more than a job; it ' s a way of life. When the chapel bells ring at 5:00 P.M., the day ' s work is seldom done. In the lib, on the fourth floor of Slayter, in an empty classroom, students earnestly (and sometimes a little less earnestly ) tackle this business of getting an education. 16 17 THE PERFORMERS The Boy The Girl TTie Boy ' s Father The Stranger The Girl ' s Mother The Mother ' s Lover TTie Cashier The Waiter TTie First Actress The Second Actress The Manager The Young Actor The Impresario The Hotel Waiter The Clerk Bruce Weber Lynn Wilde John Reynolds Taylor Harmon _ Elizabeth Swanson John Kuhner _ Catherine Williams Jay Jans Jane Lewis Saundra Peirce Richard Tauber David Hutchings — Alan Shevio Nathan Koenig Thomas Cuff THE PLAY ' S SCENES . — ion of the p ai; takes place in the refreshment room of a French provincial railway station and in a hotel bedroom in Marseilles. As fog pervaded East in level ranks. You danced by the water. Like the silver appendage of a spider You caught the light in which you spun, And your heart was an eagle draining The wind to die. Shaking the snow From your wings, you said, Think Of the silence between our hands. A silence of feathers and warm blue eggs That thrive where the cedar cones freeze. Such was the silence as, one by one, The days threw off their chains. The wind ' s Ammunition diminished, and ice disappeared From the arsenal floor. The spikes of Spring Grew taut and greened the land. Geese Barraged from southern guns, shelling The northern plains, but, removed From the revolution, you swam In shallows and braided your hair. Chicken Little CM. I dreamed a day so Bitter bright glazed, A shriek, a sharp Sled ' s runner on concrete Might shatter it; Even as the ice-image is Of sky and clouds By Httle boys in boots Stamping frozen puddles Cracked Then Autumn came like Scottish warriors; A forest of tartans. You apprehended this— Turning towards the orchard, rebel. You raised your arms, Pears, split with Ripeness, and drop your nectar on brown Pine needles this afternoon. Though the fire Sang and a leaf and acorn fell. The disciplined fruit lingered in silence. And, as geese roved home, you covered Your body as one who wraps a shroud about Her child; too deep a sigh would stir Your human dust. Then, as blue inflected crimson Ignited cliffs, an ocean riveted with stars Assailed your spine and tumbled you into The furrows like a seed. You parted Your lips for the rain, giving your breasts To the wind, and your delicate fingers Became talons filed to destroy. Yet burning this the last feather, I forgive the dark incisions: As we watched one night dishevel dusk And yield to dawn, your lashes stripped Me of husks and left me blind and naked On the threshing floors of your eyes. Unlike a conch in a child ' s hand. With amplified chants of water and wind This ricochets through my flesh. For I lean like a tree too close to the sea. And my seed explodes in the sand. FISHING WITH LIGHT TACKLE R.H,. Each time I cast my lure disturbs Your pool, and you only Watch the waves usher their weight To the shore, and when I Tease your mouth to commune on prayer Thin line, you suspend your Silver move in quivering shadow. In hunger ' s ritual, I Stalk and read the shallows. The wind V ' s the fervent stream ' s Still side, and I forget the vision . Of you flashing in your quarried Pride. A dark thrust-swirl. The line sings Colours of our separate worlds. 23 Pamela Carroll Junior Prom Queen Delta Delta Delta 24 Kathryn Knapp Adytum Queen Delta Gamma 25 Most Denison students don ' t suffer from cases of all-work-and-no- play. Indeed, sun-worshipping, stop watch watching, tv gazing, horse and goat snatching, and just plain wanderin are but a few of their pastimes. 27 From the first cold rains of March that melt away winter ' s snow and slush to the May shower of apple blossoms that covers Chapel Walk — there ' s something about a Denison springtime which simply isn ' t conducive to study. Umbrellas bloom in Huffman ' s lower lounges, the smell of freshly mown grass drifts over the campus, students begin to get that wistful, faraway look in their eyes, and understanding professors compromise by holding classes out- of-doors. 28 tl a . - — As winter exits on the warm breezes of springtime, the entire Denison community finds itself engaged in a fever of activities such as tutoring and serving for Bonds of Friendship. John Davidson highlighted this year ' s Bonds ' weekend — a smashing success. And then came the annual May Day — Mother ' s Day Weekend — bringing with it unbelievably lovely weather and Denison s own Queen of the May, Miss Carol Heacock. 32 As June nears Seniors begin to realize that there will be many no mores — no more working phone duty, eating in dining halls and fraternity houses, picking up sheets on Tuesday, watching the underclassmen trample each other as they rush to be first in line at meals, falling asleep while studying for comps in the lib, having classes in Slayter, watching the new buildings go up, participating in serenades, and marching in proudly to receive that Denison diploma. (But college days will continue in September for the new seniors, juniors, sophomores, and the spanking new freshmen). Good-by, . . . Fair college on the hill, . . . but a good-by said knowing that there will be a future ahead with many opportunities; a future, too, with memories of . . . The scene of happy college days . . . . — the scene of great importance and influence in our lives. Seniors, we ' ll expect you back as alums! I Dr. Donald G. Tritt Dr. Samuel D. FOOTBALL Big Red passes down. The 1964 edition of Denison ' s Big Red gridders, sporting their single wing offense, had a 3-3 record in the Ohio Conference and defeated all non-conference rivals fin ishing the season with a fine 6-3 record. In the home opener against non-conference rival Rochester, the Big Red surged back in the second half to defeat the New Yorkers 20-7. The Big Red added two more scalps to their skein by defeating Wilmington 35-7 and conference rival Wooster 7-0. Homecoming spirit was dampened as the Big Red, looking ahead to the battle with unbeaten Wittenberg, was upset by an inspired Mount Union team 21-7. The following week the Denison gridders matched the nation ' s number one ranked small college team, Wittenberg, yard for yard in the second half, but could not overcome a rocky first half and dropped their second straight 40-14. The Big Red bounded back onto the winning trail defeating non-conference opponent Carnegie Tech 27- 7. The following week, however, a Dad ' s Day crowd of 5,000 watched Muskingum get revenge on Denison for her stunning upset last year as the Muskies defeated the Big Red 13-7. In the home finale Denison romped over cellar- dweller Kenyon, setting a record of 31 first downs and defeating the Lords 60-0. The Big Red ended the season on a winning note by defeating its traditional rival Ohio Wesleyan 22-6. Tailback Denny Price ' s 741 yards rushing, good for 60 points, earned him the Ohio Conference rushing and scoring tides. Tackle Stan Kondracki was voted Denison ' s most valuable player and most efficient offensive Hneman awards. The juniors dominated the rest of the awards as San White was named most efficient offensive back. Bob Chisholm was chosen most efficient defensive lineman, and Paul Hylbert was named most efficient defensive back. Sophomore Bo Schubert received the most improved player award. 83 Denny Price, Ohio Conference scoring and rushing champ, runs against Wilmington. The Big Red soccer team, with 25 returning lettermen, compiled a 6-5-2 record this year and won a berth in the NCAA Mid-East Regional Soccer Tournament. The team got oflf to a slow start with a tie at Ohio University and a loss to Hartwick. However, in succeeding games the team was able to live up to its potential. Led by Co-captain Dick Moser and goaUe Iain Callan, the hooters beat Kenyon 6-0 in a conference match. They outshot the Lords 53-7. In the tournament Denison came up against Akron, the defending champion, and lost a heartbreaker 5-2. Junior Bill Stephens, fourth in goals in the conference, was placed on the first team of the All-Ohio Squad. Goalie Iain Callan, Chip Chamberlain, and Pete Gustavson made second team, while Dick Moser copped Honorable Mention. Co- captains Moser and Gustavson tied for the Mike Gregory Most Valuable Player Trophy, and John McCarthy received the Most Improved Player Award. Plagued with injuries throughout the season, the harriers were not able to win any matches but showed much potential. Junior letterman Fred Williamson improved greatly over last year and turned in some very impressive times throughout the season. Other returning lettermen were Dave Boothby and sophomore Pete Chaveas. Some very impressive freshmen joined the team this year and gained much experience. Pete Walther and Al Risch improved greatly over the season, but freshman Greg Phillips broke his leg after the first meet and was sidelined for the remainder of the season. The team opened their season with three non-league games in the powerful eastern college area. Although they lost all three, they did gain valuable experience with teams vastly superior to their own league teams. They immediately snapped back, however, and took the next five league matches with little trouble. At Kenyon, sophomore Glenn DeMallie scored three goals in the second period to break a 1-1 tie and provide the needed advantage for a Big Red victory. At Dayton, San White, just off the injury list, slapped in a pair of goals to send Denison home victorious. In their ninth game of the season, Oberlin College finally stopped the Big Red pucksters 9-4. It was the first league defeat Denison had sufi ' ered in the preceding 14 league contests, going back as far as mid- season 1963. The Yeoman were only able to accomplish this feat by slapping in six straight goals in the final period of play. In the semi-final championship game, Denison annihilated Fenn College 10-0, as Tom Cooper tallied three goals. In the championship game Denison attempted revenge on Oberhn, but after a bitter duel in which two sudden death overtimes were played, the Yeoman finally pulled it out 5-4. Coach Bill Preston expects a fine team next year as Glerm DeMallie, Gordie Trevett, George Parks, Tom Cooper and Goahe Paul Hylbert will all be returning lettermen for the Big Red. Three years ago the Denison swim team, under the direction of Ted Barclay, finished its first season with a 1-8-1 record. The 1964-65 squad went undefeated in the conference regular season 12-1 overall and placed second in the Ohio Conference Meet. The team is composed of eight of the nine top swimmers from last year, plus an exceptionally fine freshman squad. Sophomore Doug Landgraf was the Big Red ' s workhorse, swimming the 200-yard butterfly, 500-yard freestyle, and 200-yard individual medley relay. He broke records at nearly every meet. He won two events in the conference meet and set a new conference record with the 200-yard butterfly. Freshman Hugh Wilder, All-American in high school, bettered the school record four times in the backstroke and also helped out in the 400-yard medley relay. He copped first place in both the 100 and 200- yard backstroke at the conference meet. Other freshmen who saw regular action were Rick McBurney, freestyler and butterflier; Bart Weyand, freestyler; and breaststroker Steve Schultz. Co-captains Tim Bannon and Jim Lake along with sophomore Sam Pole round out the regular squad. Hal Ross and Craig Koerpel share the honors in diving. Ross became the new conference diving champion in the conference meet. The two most important meets of the year came toward the end of the season. Unbeaten Wittenberg, winner of the Ohio relays, went back to Springfield with one defeat as the Denison tankers outstroked them 59-36. Denison won seven of the eleven first places and set six pool records. The following week saw Denison drub Kenyon, defending conference champs, 54-41 by taking seven of the eleven events. The Big Red ' s only loss came at the hands of highly rated Cincinnati. In the conference meet Denison swimmers took six titles. Unfortunately, the conference switched over to a new system of scoring which found Denison finishing second behind Kenyon. If they had been on the old system, Denison would have won the championship. With the loss of only one senior on the team, the Big Red tankers look forward to a very strong team nex} year in their fourth year of competition. The Big Red matmen were paced by three wrestlers who were undefeated in season competition, Co- captain Dan Tuttle, Bob Gibson, and Ed Season. These three men were strongly backed up by Co-captain Dave Graff, Tom Stege, Jim Lawton, and freshman standout Jack Hilbert. The squad won its first five matches and went on to outscore its opponents 223 to 115. The high point of the season did not come until the final match of the season when the Big Red grapplers defeated previously unbeaten Baldwin-Wallace 14-12. The team finished fourth in the Ohio Conference Meet behind Hiram, Baldwin-Wallace, and Akron. Dan Tuttle won the conference title for the 137- pound class. Heavyweight Bob Gibson also gained a third place title in the conference finals. Gibson then went on to place third in the heavyweight division of the NCAA small college conference finals leading Denison to a 15th place finish among the nation ' s small colleges. With many of the wrestlers returning next year we can look forward to a continuation of Denison ' s fine wrestling heritage. BASKETBALL The Big Red hoopsters sported one of its youngest teams in many seasons. The team lost four lettermen through graduation. With only three returning lettermen, underclassmen had to step in and fill some mighty big shoes. A fine crop of freshmen, although lacking the valuable college experience, added immeasurably to the team as the season progressed. After a slow start, Denison finally showed its great potential by beating powerful Otterbein in double overtime. The Otters ' key man, Don Carlos, conference leading scorer and rebounder, was held powerless by the tall Red defense. The Big Red finally nailed the game down in overtime 56-5 1 . At DePauw, junior letterman George Barber played the best game of his college career tallying 3 1 points along with 30 rebounds, but all in vain as a full court press caused the Big Red to turn the ball over 25 times and thus lose a heartbreaker 69-62. In the most exciting game of the year Denison played a very aggressive game against powerful Wittenberg, only to be beaten in the fourth overtime 62- 60. The nationally rated power had to use all of its material to outscrap the Big Red as Denison outshot and out-rebounded the Tigers. Bob Colonel Johnson led both teams with 21 points. In the Ohio Conference Tournament Denison drew second-ranked Ohio Wesleyan. The Bishops, led by Barry Qemens, Mike Gregory Award winner, had to go to the last moment of play to secure victory as the Big Red went down 59-57. Coach Dick Scott commented that this year ' s team was one of the youngest he had ever worked with and yet has more potential than any other. Barber, Johnson, and guard Sam Pratt along with freshmen Bill Druckemiller, Karl Bolstad, and Tom Demo, who saw regular action this season, will all be back next year to give Denison one of the most potent teams it has had in years. 96 First Row: Head Coach Dick Scott, Bob H. The stickmen also continued a 34 game winning streak on their home field dating back to April of 1960 without a loss. The stickmen went nine tough games without a defeat. In the Syracuse game goalie Bill Stephens made 22 saves to keep Denison on top 1 1-9. In the Kenyon romp Denison scored 1 1 goals in the first half, five of them by big Pete Johnson with five assists by junior John Beatson. Freshman Dick Rieg surprised the crowd by chucking in three goals himself. But the big games were the two matches with Ohio State. In the first match Denison pulled out a victory by pure determination. With four minutes remaining in the game the Big Red was down by two. At that point Sandy Campbell, followed by Pete Johnson, whipped a pair of shots past the State goalie to tie the game. With seconds remaining Rieg flipped the ball to Johnson who rammed it past the shell- shocked OSU goalie for the score. The win was attributed to the sparkling offense of Pete Johnson and the whole defensive unit, composed of Al Burnett, Paul Doty, Bill Wynn, Kim Kugler and goalie Bill Stephens. In the second OSU game the Big Red just did not have it. Al Burnett midway in the game was injured and left the game leaving a wide hole in the Big Red defense. Ohio State won 13-6 and as a result put Denison into a tie for first place with them. Coach Dick Scott engineered his first undefeated team through a very rugged season and was able to cop second place in the Ohio Conference Tournament. It was a highly successful year for senior Dan Hazelton as he went without a defeat in number one singles and along with Captain Frank Krohn went undefeated in number one doubles. In his four year career at Denison Hazelton has compiled a fantastic 34-5 record in singles and 35-4 record in doubles. Freshman Mike Barr also made a big hit in his first year of collegiate termis. Barr played number three and four singles and teamed up with Bob Hellerson to do equally well in the doubles category. It was this doubles team of Barr- Hellerson that gave the Big Red their crucial win over the defending champs from Ohio Wesleyan during the season. In the Ohio Conference Tournament Denison came up against stiff competition from a rough Wittenberg crew and were squeezed out of the winners ' spot. Dan Hazelton, however, brought home a gold medal while Tom Hardesty and Ken Booth were able to gain a medal in the number three doubles. TENNIS j Frank Krohn makes a backhand return. They have succeeded in beating their last 30 opponents and their last 37 Ohio Conference foes. In his first year as coach for the linksmen, Roy Sells put together a well-rounded squad of experienced upperclassmen and talented freshmen to make up one of Denison ' s finest golf teams. Captain Ron Morgan and junior Pete Stocker were able to take medalist honors in most of the matches, but occasionally freshmen Fenton Davison and Joe Gavazzi came out with the lowest tally and won medalist honors. As a whole the team was able to average a sizzling 77.9 strokes per match. The rough blow of the season came when the linksmen were at Marietta. They won the match I41 2 to 71 2 , but in the process Pete Stocker pulled a muscle, and two weeks later in the conference championship he was so hampered by the injury that he scored well over par which forced Denison to release their almost traditional hold on the conference championship cup. At Heidelberg he ran the three-mile run for the first time in his life and lowered the track record 25 seconds and the school record by two minutes. Co-captain Evan Patterson continued this year to break all records in both the high and low hurdles. Unfortunately Patterson pulled a muscle midway through the indoor season and was out of action for the remainder of the season. The doctor gave him the go ahead for the Marietta outdoor meet, and Evan proceeded to take first in the high hurdles in that very meet. Art Morrow put the shot for the Big Red this year and attained a record put of 49 ' ! and went undefeated in the discus during the outdoor season. A very potent group of freshmen found themselves in first string positions this year, and although lacking the college experience, they worked right in with the rest of the team. Freshman Bill Kocher in his first starting game in college against Baldwin- Wallace went three for five with two triples and a pair of RBI ' s. In the same game freshman Rod Poetter smacked a four-bagger. A week later during a double-header at Kenyon, Kocher went four for eight with two home runs. The following week freshman hurler Woody Dill, in his first college assignment, beat Muskingum 4-1 as he struck out six. The pitching staff had plenty of depth this year with hurlers such as sophomore Jim Brown, Gary Arnold, and Jay Ogsbury besides Dill. The hitting department was stimulated by Dan Kipp who led the team in RBI ' s and Jim Rogers, who had a perfect day, four for four, at Kenyon early in the season. Stan Kondracki, defending conference batting champ, and pro-prospect Bud Christ also aided the Denison sluggers considerably.
