T 1 .AU 'i V E Q. uf' , w, so-ul Thx L g Although plagued with injuries, the Big Red soccer team, defending Mid-West Small College Champions managed to finish the season with a 7-3 record. Denison, by defeating Berea in the first contest of the year, added to the seven game streak begun in 1962-63. However, highly ranked Akron ended the chain of consecutive victories by downing the Big Red 4-2 in a hard-fought battle. Denison was victorious over Hiram and then faced defending Ohio Conference Champions, Ohio University. Fullback Bob Schultz turned in a good performance, freshman goalie Iain Callan made two outstanding saves, and Dick Moser and Bill Stephens combined eiforts to put in the winning goal. Adding to the depth of this yearls team was the J.V. Raider squad which posted its fourth undefeated season, outscoring opponents 28-5 . Senior Bill Marks received the Most Valuable and the Most Etlicient Defensive Player awards. The Most Eiiicient Offensive Player was Dick Moser, and Pete Gustavson earned the Most Improved Player trophy. The Panda,'-award, given to the senior who contributes most in team spirit, was won by Ron Holtman. Team members were further honored as Marks was named to the All-Ohio Conference first squad, and Moser, Schultz and Dave King received honorable mention ratings. Campbell, N Young, Manager The year 1963 marked the return of cross country to the status of a varsity sport at Denison Although the Big Red harriers lost eight contests and won only one C a 22 33 victory over Ashland in a triangular meetj this year s team composed solely of underclassmen showed promise for the future Injuries to key men were the big factor in this year s low record Captain B111 Holbrook broke his ankle early in the season and Frank Jewett, number two man, injured his leg after running in only two meets. However, Coach Dave Gibbons was fortunate in having a team with good depth. Freshman Maj Hall made an impressive showing, coming in at the end of the season.
