Many important organizations were not included in the catalogue. The personality and achievements of the student body and many special events and traditions had no mention. Therefore, the fraternities then represented on campus, Sigma Chi and Beta Theta Pi, decided to publish the first Denison yearbook. The editorial and publication board poured over a dictionary, seeking for their publication some name with a Delphic mystery about it. Scanning the a's, they found A d ytum-the innermost or secret shrine of ancient temples. And so they designed the yearbook to represent the inner side of student life. There were no pictures in this yirst edition, only cartoons, witty sayings, and elaborate print. In 1888 a student company undertook The Adytum as a private enterprisey in 1891 it was again a fraternity project. But in 1893 the Senior class published the yearbook and continued to do so until the Junior class took over in 1902. Although its quality, content, and general plan have evolved during its 71 editions, the goals set by the first Adytum remain essentially those of the present stajjf: to give insight into Denison's spirit and traditions, and to immortalize her soul-her children who go forth. M en and wom.en crowding fast in the streets . . . if they are not flashes and specks, what are they? We are men and womeng what are we? We are children who have gone forth, who now go forth into the myriad mysteries of life. College life is a microcosm of the nature and processes of athletics 16-51 organizations 94-125 creative arts 135-145 being as presented is Walt Whitman's poem ' There Was a Child Went Forth. The people we meet, the life we here experience become 160-183 a part of us,' we become a part of the mystery. 2 President A. Blair Knapp, A.B., M.A., LL.D., L.H.D., HH.D. And these become of him or her that pursues them now The core of the Denison experience and program is in- tellectual, but history demonstrates clearly that intel- lectual attainment is by no means enough. Denison and its students and faculty must, therefore, be concerned with the whole pattern of personal development. Habits, attitudes, ideals, purposes and goals pursued and developed here will inevitably become of him or her for a life time. Maximum personal growth in all respects must be our objective together. 3 ! On the basis of this fine season, Coach Keith Piper was named Ohio College Football Coach of the Year. In the first game of the season against nonconference opponent Rochester, the local gridders were forced to come from behind in the second half to defeat the New Yorkers, 7-6. After coasting over Carnegie Tech, 16-6, the Denison squad faced conference rival Muskingum in a hard fought game. Jim Moats, touchdown and the conversion by Jack Wilson provided a 7-6 triumph and ended a five year domination by the Muskies. This victory marked the fiftieth win of Coach Piper's career. The Big Red shut out Wooster, 6-0, before an enthusiastic Homecoming crowd and the passing of Tony Hall led the team to a 24-7 victory over Mount Union. Denison continued its winning ways by scoring two consecutive shut-outs, over Heidelberg, 10-0, and Western Reserve, 17-0. Going into the Oberlin game, the Denison team sported a 7-0 record and had a string of thirteen consecutive victories. The Yeoman squad converted two pass interceptions into touchdowns and dealt the Big Red the only defeat of the season, 20-14. The season ended with a 19-0 victory over traditional rival, Ohio Wesleyan. Halfback Jack Wilson and end Bob Knuti were named to the first string All Conference defensive unit. Knuti was also voted Denison's Most Valuable Player while George Schudy was named the Most Improved Player. Denison's gridders led the league in pass defense, holding their opponents to 50.8 yards per game. However, highly ranked Akron ended the chain of consecutive victories by downing the Big Red 4-2 in a hard-fought battle. Denison was victorious over Hiram and then faced defending Ohio Conference Champions, Ohio University. Fullback Bob Schultz turned in a good performance, freshman goalie Iain Callan made two outstanding saves, and Dick Moser and Bill Stephens combined eiforts to put in the winning goal. Adding to the depth of this yearls team was the J.V. Raider squad which posted its fourth undefeated season, outscoring opponents 28-5 . Senior Bill Marks received the Most Valuable and the Most Etlicient Defensive Player awards. The Most Eiiicient Offensive Player was Dick Moser, and Pete Gustavson earned the Most Improved Player trophy. The Panda,'-award, given to the senior who contributes most in team spirit, was won by Ron Holtman. The Big Red triumphed over Dayton 3-2 in a game highlighted by a ten minute free-for-all. Following victories over Case Tech and Fenn, the squad defeated Kenyon, Dayton, and'the Ohio Uni- versity J .Vfs to cinch the league title. The final game of the season was an 8-1 win over Hillsdale College. Top scorers for the season were John Klein, Tom Stewart and George Parks with 25, 24, and 21 points respectively. The defensive work of San White, Al Burnett, Dave Klunder, and Busch Bailey helped goalie Paul Hylbert give up an average of only 2.0 goals per game. Denison's icemen finished with a 9-0-l season's record. The success of this young team marks another milestone in the rapid progress of ice hockey in the Denison sports program. 2 it 1 1 it Lawton, B. Guided by coaches Dale Googins and Jim Forgraves, Denison's young but de- termined wrestling team chalked up a season record of nine wins against only three losses. Four returning lettermen, including co-captains Dave Graif and Dan Tuttle, set out with enthusiasm to better last year's discouraging record. Pacing the grapplers in the 137 lb. division was Dan Tuttle, who lost but one match while capturing eleven others. The other captain, Dave Graff, finished 9-2-1 in the 130 lb. class. A group of promising freshmen proved to be just that. Ed Season, wrestling in the 147 lb. division, ended the year with a 10-2 markg in the 177 lb. class, Bob Gibson was credited with eight victories against three defeats and one tie. In the heavyweight division, .lim Lawton ended 4-6-2g Baldy Hoffman came in to re- place Lee McBride, a January graduate, and iinished out the season 1-6. Backing up these men were freshmen Dick Tho- burn, Jeff Anderson, and Al Longman. The squad won its first five matches and by the close of the season had chalked up 239 points to its opponents' 118. Highlight of the year was a victory over previously undefeated Akron Uni- versity by a 15-11 margin. Although the team came in fifth in the Conference meet, it must be noted that the league had improved significantly in comparison to last year when the Big Red came in sixth. In the O.C. meet, Tuttle and Stege copped second place wins, Gibson, a third, and Season, a fourth. Q2 4 --.,,- H ,I- l I ji fi' i 1 STS 53' QA ,MNAGER -Q ! jf' , i rl . , A First Row: J. Coach Ted Barclay's squad, built around a core of powerful freshmen, proved they were anything but wet behind the ears, bettering last year's win total in their first two meets. High point of the season came in the dual meet with Kenyon. The Lords later went on to win their 11th straight Ohio Conference title, but not before suffering a 52-43 loss to the Big Red. Leading the way to victory was Doug Landgraf, the fleet freshman taking three first places. Landgraf was undefeated in the dual meet season. Under Captain Bill McGuire, Deni- son proved its mettle by cracking every team record set the previous year. In the Ohio Conference Championships, the Big Red finished in sixth place, just 3M points out of fourth. After a dismal start, including a loss to powerful Ohio University, Denison came alive to defeat favored De Pauw 71-55. The team then began its longest winning streak in 20 years, capturing nine games without loss. During this stretch Denison defeated such teams as Kenyon, Capital, and Wooster. The victory over Wooster Q65-425 was especially significant since the Scots had previously downed powerful Wittenberg and Ohio Wesleyan. Six-foot- seven sophomore George Barber was a standout in this game as he snagged 29 rebounds. He closed the season fourth in the conference in this department. 'Colonel' Johnson established a new Denison free throw record by hitting 19 consecutive attempts, 15 of them against Wooster. Jim Brown, a six-foot-six junior, added balance to this year's team with his steady defensive play and regular scoring ability. He was Coach Dick Scott's big weapon at Heidelberg where 'he scored 18 points, and he fired in 17 when he returned to his hometown of Chicago where Denison whipped the University of Chicago, 50-35. Dan Hazelton and Rich Oviatt combined for 17 points in the final ten minutes at Wilmington as the Big Red came from behind to win its wildest contest of the year. Freshman guard Dave Woodland demonstrated his great potential when he led the Red victory over Kenyon with 14 points. Guard Sy Nelson was named to the second team All-Ohio Conference squad. The strong but sometimes erratic 1964 team completed the season with a 14-9 record, the best in Coach Scott's tive years at Denison. Johnson drives through Akron defense. Hitting was the big factor in most of Denison's baseball victories this year. Led by Stan Kondracki f.4575, Bud Christ f.2865 and Captain Dick Rash 12835, the Big Red pounded out a total of' 100 hits during the 15 game season, including 15 doubles, two triples, and six home runs. In the Held, centerfielder Rash played errorless ball and made several outstanding catches. Catcher Kondracki, first baseman Dan Kipp, and shortstop Christ were also standouts. Freshmen John Cooley and Jim Rogers were additions to the infield who displayed much future potential. The pitching corps was better than in previous years. Jay Ogsbury had the lowest earned run average 14.55 and freshmen Gary Arnold and Jim Brown each picked up two victories. Fine performances were also turned in by Bill Catron and Jost Nickelsberg. In conference title competition, Coach George Hill's nine played the role of spoiler, On May 16 they defeated Mount Union, 4-1, in the first game of a doubleheader at Alliance and on May 19 they trounced Wittenberg in the season's finale. As both teams were battling for the O.C. championship, the Big Red forced a playoff. The David was not born of a caress,- the artisfs hands were learned, the clay was disciplined. Musicians too must discipline a press before the horn exudes its loveliness. The artist never mourns, but makes a song of all this sin. He sings that everywhere the world is wrong to search for innocence, and not the song. C.C. But a brown memory is summer now Like the leaves, dunes and rushes. Sand which once ran through Our toes and fingers is dismal Beneath the brown sun And sky. Write me, Of warm yellow hearths And red calico, Of fresh bread rooms with purple filled Jars, frosted white on pantry shelves, Of burning driftwood-golden In flames and outside white Excluded by thick panes. Tell me of mottled quilts on Cherry beds and braided rugs On old planking worn Smooth by the running of Many years and Many feet. All too much for one, Write me And, I'll come. Tonight the winter, gaunt and dying, Withers on the window at spring's touch. The gossamer tendrils of the frost Cling, unmolding secretly, Then bluntly glide, and vanish. Tonight 1 watch with you the dripping pane And wonder why you thrust your hand Upon the glass to warm it, And why, with all the vastness of your soul, You only talk of spring. B.T. The sun dies 017 for another day at last. It is teatime in the sitting room, A biscuit cracks in the growing gloom, And Stained glass windows lend their somber cast Mother pours tea and holds her napkin fast She smells of clove and dogwood bloom, She talks of sin and Jesus' tomb, Of great Ulysses bound up to the mast. Mother is a proper soul and chaste She's made of lace and ostrich plumeg She said she wove me on a loom, That girls are made of paper, boys of paste. Teatime, and another afternoon has passed, I can barely see across the room, Barely smell the strong' perfume Of apples, rotting slowly in the grass. ' !
