CONTENTS 3 THIS IS DENISON Each life develops its own topography — each has its hills and its valleys, yet each aspires at every step to greater heights. Denison has taught many things to all of us — things which we hope will aid us in reaching the summits of our ambition. Here we have studied, laughed, cried, and above all, we have learned to know people and ourselves. We hope this book will capture some of those experiences of gaiety, depression and inspiration which makes Denison for each of us. To Denison we raise our song Fair college on the hill . . . The scene of happy college days The home we love so well. 6 10 MARK W. SMITH ELIZABETH HARTSHORN Dean of Men Dean of Women NANCY DENMAN BURTON W. DUNFIELD LOIS E. They worked together to make the traditional Jun- ior Prom a success and, of course, went all out for their class picnic. They were tapped for honoraries and began to plan for honor ' s projects in their senior year. In April, members of the class moved into the key campus governmental positions and looked to their senior year at Denison with excited anticipation. Karen Macey, Chet Swett, Sam Armacost, Jane Hopper. 54 SOPHOMORE CLASS COUNCIL What is a sophomore? The class of ' 62 pushed aside the idea of a sophomore slump and showed that they were fully integrated into all phases of Denison Hfe. They had high hopes for the year and planned a May Day celebration that was one of the most beautiful events of the year, sponsored a very successful skating party at the Olde Mill, were tapped for honoraries, became a definite part of the governing body of the school, decided on their majors, and finished the year with high hopes for their junior year. Gretchen Lighthizer, Wesley Andrews, Mary Koll, Bob McNaughten. 58 i FRESHMAN CLASS COUNCIL The Freshman Class Council, new to the Denison Community, planned and carried through a very successful year for their class. The first big activity was The Reaper Rock, a well publicized and attended dance which was open to all class members. A successful car wash was held in the spring for Bonds of Friendship. Those on the council were Judy Enghsh, Marcia Lott, Richard Scale, and Sam Dieterich. Dick Scale, Judy English, Sam Dieterich, Marcia Lott. 62 CLASS OF ' 63 INTER-CLASS ACTIVITIES Activities play an important part in the college life on the hill. Individual classes are kept busy with Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior ac- tivities, but people manage to get to- gether in the union, at the sports events, and just plain relaxing where they are all Denisonians. . . . and I really don ' t understand it at all! j i ' 66 HOMECOMING Homecoming, 1959, with its theme Disney ' s Denison Land began on Friday, October 9 with a soccer game and a parade of spirited freshmen in pajamas to the bon- fire near Livingston gymnasium. Around the bonfire spirits soared as students and alumni cheered for Deni- son. Late that night and into the early morning hours, students worked on floats and decorations for the next day. With beat of drum and flourish of majorette baton from the Granville High School band the Homecoming parade down Broadway began at 10:30 on Saturday morning. Fraternity floats followed the band. Among the floats paraded the candidates for Homecoming queen and fraternity, sorority, and dorm characters. On Saturday afternoon the Big Red team met the Wooster Scots on Deeds Field for the annual footbaU game. That night Homecoming festivities ended with the Homecoming dance. ATO brothers pull their Showboat. Submarine sinks Wooster player at East Cottage. 68 HOMECOMING QUEEN The candidates for Homecoming Queen, 1959, were Judy Graham, chosen by AOPi; Mike Friel, Alpha Phi; Ann Miller, Chi O; Gina Carver, Tri Delt; Katie Boles, DG; Ann Mittendorf, Independent Association; Karen Macey, Theta; Sy Sherman, Kappa; and Ann Lucas, Pi Phi. During half-time at the Homecoming football game, the candidates were greeted by President Knapp, who announced the Queen elected by the Denison men. Den- ison ' s Homecoming Queen for 1959 was Gina Carver and her attendants were Sy Sherman and Katie Boles. Last year ' s queen, Kine Icks, congratulates Gina Carver. Homecoming Queen, 1959, Gina Carver. HOMECOMING QUEEN CANDIDATES — Mike Friel, Ann Miller, Ann Mittendorf, Sy Sherman, Gina Carver, Karen Macey, Ann Lucas, Katie Boles, Judy Graham. D-DAY UG! Hold that Tiger! With the ringing of this favorite song of Denison students and amid great cheering on the campus, Spring and Fall D-Days began. In the Fall the bells rang at 6:00 in the morning and Denison slept late. When the campus finally aroused itself, it found programs of the day ' s ac- tivities outside. The day started with a brunch on the quad and races including a race on tricycles. The afternoon found Denison students turfing or watching IM soccer games. A picnic at Ebaugh ' s Pond and a dance that night in Livingston gym rounded out the day. In the Spring the bells rang in the Day at 6:02 in the evening. Then came mad rushing for phones and hurried room cleaning. Dates were met at their doors and a dance was held in front of Livingston. The next morning brought students and faculty to the traditional brunch on the quad. In the afternoon there were baseball games, track meets, and turfing. After the fried chicken picnic at Ebaugh ' s Pond, Denison returned to study. The show is over, the frosh have won. No D-Day without turfing. 70 II WESLYAN MIGRATION Over 250 Ohio Wesleyan students, and even more Denison stu- dents participated in the Wesleyan migration in the fall. The mi- gration was planned by the Denison all-school social committee. After the two schools fought on the football field, all coUegiates had an opportunity to socialize in both the D.U. and S.A.E. frater- nity houses where open-house jam sessions were held. Mike Friel, Elise Under, and Jack Meeks with Dr. Nelson in an informal discussion group held in the Union following convocation. Participating in Life in Focus discussion at the Chi Omega house are Liz Brunsted, Jim Irwin, Dr. Cole, and Jean Ludwig. C. E. DAYS FALL The chairmen of the Fall C-E Days, Delma Miller, and Dean Coursen, discuss theme with Dr. Nelson. SPRING The Fall Christian Emphasis Days of 1959 and the Life in Focus week of Spring, 1960, both functions of the Denison Christian As- sociation, were ten days of serious thinking and discussion. The ideas arising from the convocations and discussions certainly outlasted the days of concentrated thought and had a definite effect on the campus. Dr. John Nelson, the guest speaker for the Fall C-E Days, spoke on Beyond Complexity, Christian Maturity. Several discussion groups led up to Life in Focus week with Dr. William Cole whose talks centered around Faith, Sex, and Love. Sue McAllister and Dr. Cole before Life in Focus convocation. BONDS OF FRIENDSHIP Bonds of Friendship week, held annually at Denison, is climaxed by the Bonds of Friendship show. The show is an entirely student produced event. All proceeds from Bonds of Friendship are contributed to charity. Mary, Turkey, Gregg and Jerry re- hearse a number. What would we do without the crew? All eyes on the script. Two girls, one wish. MADRAS MANIA Concluding the social activities for the spring was Madras Mania, held on the week-end preceding the last week of classes. The entire campus made a migration to Spring Valley for an afternoon of swimming, sun, and picnicking. Sandwich and a smile make for a good time. You wouldn ' t! Caught in the act. Looks like a spike. ADYTUM QUEEN Lynn Kothera, a member of Chi Omega sorority, was chosen by Stan Kenton during the Bonds of Friend- ship weekend to be the 1960 ADY- TUM Queen. Barbara Porter, a mem- ber of Kappa Alpha Theta, was se- lected runner-up. Lynn Kothera J. Kelley, S. Tyler, M. LeVan, B. Porter, L. The other candidates were: Gayle She tier, AOPi; Lorrie Kelly, Alpha Phi; Ann Miller, Chi O; Barb Schub- ler, DG; Gail Carmichael, Theta; Jean Powell, Kappa; Nancy MelUn- ger, Pi Phi. Roberta Williams G. Carmichael, R. Williams, J. Powell. 77 MAY QUEEN The May Queen of 1960 was crowned by Dr. Dean on Denison ' s May Day in Liv- ingston Gymnasium after a bright, flower- strewn processional to the throne. This year ' s queen was Gretchen Yocum of Delta Gamma. She was honored by the May Pole dance and songs by the Glee Club. First Row: D. Sweeder, AOPi; D. Miller, Chi O; J. Air, Alpha Phi; J. A general education class. Phi Bet ' s rate no special mention. Only those who love will pass. Bob Canary ' 61 80 The ninety-second year of the Mu chapter of Sigma Chi, founded in 1855, was successful in activities, service projects, and social events. By working together, the Sigs were able to excel in the intra-mural athletic races. As a resuU of this athletic achievement, the Sigs once again had more D-men than any other fraternity on the Denison campus. Their social program was highlighted by parties for orphans, the Sweetheart Dance, and the annual spring weekend known as the Bloody Bucket. In 1885 the Denison campus also re- ceived this honor with the addition of the Lambda Deuteron chapter. The Phi Gam ' s manage to maintain a careful balance between social projects and social life. Since its beginning at Boston University in 1909, Lambda Chi Alplia has grown to be one of the largest of the Greek letter fraternities. The Gamma Iota Zeta chapter, known as the Syca- more Club, resides in a Georgian colonial house, the result of many years of devoted service by Lambda Chi Alumni. This year the house innovated the custom of honoring Denison ' s newly-pinned co-eds with a white rose, the fraternity flower. The mother chapter, founded at Denison in 1917, has promoted the spirit of brotherhood and civic service in addition to promoting social activity. The ACC ' s outstanding chapter project was working with the children of Franklin Vil- lage. This effective combination of contributing to both the cam- pus and community has distinguished ACC at Denison. Seated: Bob Frary, Paul Pfrommer, Steve Bollinger, Ed Dens- more. FOOTBALL Although the Denison football team did not have a good season, as the 2-5-2 record indicates, they profited greatly in the gaining of experience. The team had a number of talented freshmen this year along with many returning veterans. As the season progressed, much im- provement was seen in the team as a whole. The Denison fans were provided with many colorful and exciting moments throughout the season: the long runs of John Osborn and Nick Musuraca; the bulldoz- ing drives of Gary Hopps; the punting of Ron Witchey, who averaged 36.2 yards a kick. The team made the dads especially proud as they smashed Franklin and Marshall, 37-8, on Dad ' s Day for their most impressive victory. As is customary every year, the Gregory awards were given to the outstanding players. The winners were: Bob Follett — MVP and most efficient lineman; Gary Hopps — most efficient offensive back; John Parrish — most effi- cient defensive lineman; Tom Young — most efficient defensive back; Al Slicker — most improved player. Dave Brown and Tom Young were elected co-cap- tains for next year. Captain Tom Edwards led the team in both the scoring and rebounding depart- ments averaging 15.6 points and 11.1 rebounds a game. The most talked about game was between Denison and Wittenburg. Wittenburg was ranked first in defense and third overall in the U.S. in small college teams. The game was one of control and at half-time the score was 17-12 in favor of Wittenburg. Denison lost 33-17 but scored a tre- mendous moral victory and earned much respect. The team broke the free throw percentage record by making 69.5% of their shots compared with the old record of 68.8%. SOCCER Denison started the year by topping Indiana and Purdue, and con- tinued on to a fine 7-5-1 record. Later in the season the Big Red scored decisive victories over the U. of Michigan and Ohio State, ending up with a 4-0 record against the Big Ten schools. Senior Dick Coulter was injured early in the season and missed the opportunity to again be possibly named to the All American Soccer Squad. During his Soccer career at Denison, he set two records — most consecutive games scored in (11), most goals (43), — and tied Shaw Emmons ' record of 52 points. The team records set during the year were: most wins (7), fewest opponent goals (16), fewest opponent assists (6), fewest opponent points (22).
