the adytum 1958 denison university X X X Each of us discovers Denison for himself, thus each reflection of her experiences is a separate one. We can capture in faces, buildings, groups, and motions, the individual findings and the unity that remains. 4 X4 4 .,, ' 'V' I 5 'Z - Y' lvf ?' c ,WE 21 Q ' 1' 'Qi S 5 1,. a, 291 - 5 551 Sig A . sxiig Q 3 5' g'?' To nine returning lettermen, Tristram Coffin added his own ingredient of excellent coaching this year to lead Denison's soccer team to its second consecu- tive winning season and a second spot in the Ohio Soccer League. ln the opener with Dayton, the Big Red early ex- hibited its proficiency as a second half team by bounding back from a 2-O deficit at halftime to edge the Flyers, 4-3. Traveling to Pittsburgh for its second contest, Denison's booters met a formidable foe as the Big Red were out-run and out-fought by a three-platoon squad to a one-sided score of 3-O. Returning to conference play, the Coffinmen dropped a close one to the booters of Ohio Wesleyan and marked a decided victory over Ohio University, 5-l. At Oberlin, the booters were faced with the task of beating a team that they had never con- quered. Playing a close defensive game the Yeo- men were unable to penetrate the tight defense of halfbacks Jay Tontz, John Witmer, Bill Streamer, fullbacks Tom Thompson, Harrison Bubb, and goal- ie, Joe Rothman. With ten minutes left in the third quarter, Tontz booted the ball goalward from near- midfield and Dick Coulter rushed in to head it into the nets for the lone tally ofthe game. Back on its home field Denison played host to one of the soccer powers of the Midwest, the Uni- versity of Michigan and dropped a close one, l-O. Vengeance for the lass was quickly won, however, as the Big Red defeated Akron by a score of 5-2 and earned a precarious first place perch in the Ohio Soccer League. The season finale with OSU, how- ever, saw the Big Red miss all the breaks and at game's end the score stood at l-l. The Buckeyes emerged the victors, in double overtime, 2-l. Post season soccer polls for the All-Ohio Soccer Team placed Denison's fullback, Tom Thompson, on the first team while wingman Lodi Reinke, center forward Shaw Emmons, and inside left Dick Coulter, gained second team standing. Right halfback, Bill Streamer, earned a third team position. Denison team awards this season went to Joe Rothman, most valuable player, Tom Thompson, most efficient defenseman, and forward, Dick Coul- ter, high scorer in the Ohio League and most effi- cient offensive player on the Denison squad. Next year's captains are Shaw Emmons and Tom Thomp- son. Ouch! 2 Jerry Weddell goes in for a basket in the Oberlin game. basketball Coach Jack Swinderman's quintet was the hardest hit by graduation in the Ohio Conference and he had only five returning lettermen upon which to base the nucleus of the l957-58 basketball team. The Big Red got off to a shaky start before Christmas vacation but started the new year as champions of the Knox Holiday Festival at Gales- burg, Illinois. Probably the most exciting moment in basketball came when Bill Germond pushed home a 75-foot set shot to enable DU to best Grin- ell in the opening game, 66-6l. The next night they beat previously unbeaten Knox College for the title. The squad jockeyed back and forth around the .5OO mark for the remainder of the season but still kept Swinderman's record intact against Ohio Wes- leyan. His teams have now won eight and lost none since he became the Big Red mentor in l954, Individual Denison records during the year were set by Captain Bob Branand and Bop Phillips, both seniors. Branand hit on 45.7 of his shots from the field to establish a new season mark for field goal shooting and boost his career field goal percentage to 44.2, which is also a Big Red record. Phillips played l9 games without disqualification, breaking the record of 45 straight set by Bill Hoot in l957. Branand became the first player in Denison his- tory to win the Mike Gregory Most Valuable Player award twice. This season he tied with Dick Trimbur for the honor after capping it last year. Branand also received a gold basketball for the Captain's Award. Most Improved Player award went to sophomore Tom Edwards while senior Dick Trimbur garnered the Foul Shooting trophy with 72.0 per cent. Blankets were awarded to Branand and Phil- lips as they won their fourth letter. Trimbur, Hee- kin and Germond received their second letter, while senior Jay Sload, juniors Tom Turner and Shaw Emmons, sophomores Edwards, Dick Cash, Bob Seek, and freshman Jerry Weddell received their first numeral. Top scorers for Denison were Trimbur, 253 points, Branand, 204, Phillips, 2Ol, Weddell, l8O, Edwards, l29, and Heekin, l23. Branand led in re- bounding with 229 to his credit, which ranked him fourth in the Ohio Conference with a l3.5 average, and Trimbur was second high for Denison with l l9. season's results Denman Denson Denson Denman Denson Denmon Denson Denhon Denison ....... ...... 6 2 Denhon Denson Denhon DenBon DenBon Denmon Denson Denson Denmon Denson VVHnungton ,...., ,,,Y. 66 OberHn ..... ,..,,.., 73 Hham ....... ........ 50 Akron ..A. ...,w.. 72 GnneH .,..... ......,. 61 Knox ,,...,.,..,........... 57 Marietta ................ 88 Ohio Wesleyan ...... 72 Caphal .............,.. 110 Muskingum ......,..... 74 Kenyon .................. 65 i-ieekan captures me bon from Capital. Big Red record holder in the high jump, Bill Grafton clears the bar on his return to action, after breaking an ankle, Denison's best high hurdler, Bob Wiley, goes up and over, but fails to catch Otterbein's entry. A grand sendoff- 4 tennis The Denison Netmen completed their season with a record of eight wins and four losses. Coach Tris Coffin remarked that the men had shown a good performance, losing only to the tougher teams in the Conference. Although the team was unbeaten in match play in the Conference Tournament, they finished second to Ohio Wesleyan. Shaw Emmons succeeded in win- ning the number one singles for the third straight year. John Chandler also demonstrated good play- ing and received the Gregory Award for Outstand- Row lz B. Captain Jim Sebring repeated as the MVP for the Big Red as he got l2 hits at 39 times at bat for an average of .32O. His presence will undoubt- edly be missed next year as the 6' slugger ended his college career with a total of Sl hits at l 54 times at bat for an average of .331 The leading slugger for Denison was Bob Rob- bins with l2 hits at 29 times at bat for a .4l 4 aver- age. Bill Fleming headed the squad in RBl's with seven, while Dave Cooper led the fielders with no er- rors in 27 chances. Leading the squad as Co-Cap- tains next year will be Robbins, third baseman and pitcher, and Fleming, outfielder. Stretch and he's out! hockey Handicapped by loss of half of the previous year's team, and also by inadequate practice facilities, this year the Denison Hockey team won two and lost three games. Looking ahead to next year, Coach Bill Preston will have eight returning regulars. Sorority competition ran high during the in- tramural seasons. There was individual partici- pation in riding, golf, tennis, and dance. For the really proficient athletes, the W.R.A. offered a variety of intercollegiate sports, including bowl- ing, hockey, basketball, tennis, and golf. New activities initiated this year were a swimming marathon and skiing. Several square dance classes held co-ed dances, which proved to be quite popular to both men and women. The Outstanding Senior Award went to Pat Jones and Jan Armstrong. Runners up were Dot- tie Jones, Sandy Bixler, and Mugsy Williams. Are these angels? Row l: J. Armstrong, S. Roberts, S. Bixler, M. Birtlzplare of Specialty Advertising A Yankee drummer's visit to a small Ohio town . . . a few yards of burlap . . . and an IDEA. They fathered a multi-million dollar industry. Jasper Meek had a problem. He had to sell more job printing to show a profit with his weekly newspaper, the Coshocton Age. Earlier, Joseph Medill had edited the Age before he moved on to Chicago to start The Tribune. With faith in himself and his home town, Editor Meek searched for the answer. In the fall of '86 a drummer brought Coshocton a new sales stunt: Storekeepers distributed his imitation green- backs. Each greenback was good for a cash discount at a store. That fellow has a good idea, Meek ruminated as he walked along Main Street. He made it pay for merchants to give something away. Just then a group of skylarking school children ran by. One of them dropped his schoolbooks in the dust almost at the editor's feet. Then Jasper Meek got the idea. Yes, a man in business needs friends, he repeated. The next afternoon Meek walked into the store of his friend Cantwell, the shoe dealer, and unwrapped a neat burlap bag about 12 x 15 inches in size. A bag for carrying schoolbooks, he said, and suggested that the shoe dealer buy the bags from him and give them away. t'Your name will be printed here in large type, he ex- plained, and your advertising will be seen wherever chil- dren carry their books. The logic of Editor Meek's idea was apparent to the shoe dealer. He signed the first specialty advertising order in history. In a simple neighborly transaction between two small businessmen began an idea that resulted in Shaw-Barton, Inc., some 54 years later, today one of the country's largest calendar and specialty advertising companies. Give a person something useful, said Meek, and he'll remember you when he's placing his business. Meek was right 70 years ago, his idea is right today, and tomorrow. For human nature doesnlt change.
