IN MEMORIAM On November 1, 1942, a professor of mathematics at this university delivered a chapel address entitled Life ' s Great Reality. In it, he told us, ... I can now state what is, to me, Life ' s Great Reality: He worketh and, together with Him, we work, and He has made available for our use the unbounded resources of His power — power ... for the doing of our share of this task of creating a new world. This calls from us the ability to stand, even if need be alone, humanly speaking, against all that is subversive to the accomplish- ment of this great task; to give ourselves to the creating of a better world. Forbes B. Wiley, professor emeritus of mathematics and the speaker in chapel, died December 14, 1956. His colleagues and his students thought him one of the most brilliant and outstanding scholars ever to teach at Denison. For those close to him, perhaps more inspiring than his aca- demic nature was his real concern for people — people as individ- uals, regardless of relationship or importance in others ' eyes. Dr. Wiley was possessed of the ability to project himself beyond his own experience, to understand and to care. Again his words are better than ours: Surely he knew that mysterious power of the influence of one Life over another. Carol Shanesy 3
