Text from Pages 1 - 232 of the 1957 volume:

IN MEMORIAM On November 1, 1942, a professor of mathematics at this university delivered a chapel address entitled Life ' s Great Reality. In it, he told us, ... I can now state what is, to me, Life ' s Great Reality: He worketh and, together with Him, we work, and He has made available for our use the unbounded resources of His power — power ... for the doing of our share of this task of creating a new world. This calls from us the ability to stand, even if need be alone, humanly speaking, against all that is subversive to the accomplish- ment of this great task; to give ourselves to the creating of a better world. Forbes B. Wiley, professor emeritus of mathematics and the speaker in chapel, died December 14, 1956. His colleagues and his students thought him one of the most brilliant and outstanding scholars ever to teach at Denison. For those close to him, perhaps more inspiring than his aca- demic nature was his real concern for people — people as individ- uals, regardless of relationship or importance in others ' eyes. Dr. Wiley was possessed of the ability to project himself beyond his own experience, to understand and to care. Again his words are better than ours: Surely he knew that mysterious power of the influence of one Life over another. Only by a knowl- edge of both tradition and trend can the future be planned. We at Denison are proud of this double emphasis and the 1 957 Adytum hopes to show the value of the Denison education in which both the world of here and the world of there are explored and appreciated. A LIFE IN THE PRESENT, A LOOK TO THE FUTURE OF HERE The traditional style of the President ' s home is as familiar to us as is the mosque, the chalet, the castle of the continent to those who dwell in those far-off lands. Dr. George Docherty spoke to us and with us on Through a Glass Darkly in the fall. The subject Speak Truth to Power, presenting the Pacifist viewpoint, aroused much interest when Mr. Robert Pickus was guest speaker at the Spring Christian Emphasis Days. Students are given an oppor- tunity to meet with the speakers at the Mad Tea Party discus- sions held in the Union. Here Dr. Docherty explains more fully the convictions he has. HERE. Although we were out- weighed, California State never threatened until the last minutes when they scored. Marv Smith scored for the third Big Red touchdown. DENISON 14 MOUNT UNION 7 After penalties nullified two opening minute touchdowns by Mt. Union, the Big Red took charge and rolled a total of 311 yards. Smith, with 104 yards in twenty-five carries, slipped over for one TD while Bill Holiister carried the other. Union was held scoreless until the last quarter. 46 f DENISON 47 KENYON 0 With a 20 point second quarter scoring spree, Denison crushed a hapless Kenyon eleven before an appreciative Homecoming Day crowd. Kenyon never threatened after the opening minutes of play. Showing depth and good potential, the Big Red third stringers overran the Lord de- fense in the final quarter. DENISON 7 WOOSTER 19 Before the contest Coach Piper warned that his freshman- studded squad was making too many errors and were not up for the game. The final score proved him correct as Wooster, capitalizing on our fumbles, won the game. DENISON 14 HEIDELBERG 27 Failing to shake a mid-season slump, the Denison eleven became the sixteenth team defeated by Heidelberg in their two year winning streak. Scored upon twice in the opening period, the Big Reds were unable to rally for a successful comeback. DENISON 23 MUSKINGUM 7 Returning to the winning column, Denison upset Muskingum, a perennial conference power, 23-7. The Big Reds broke the Muskies ' year and a half winning streak after jumping to a 17-0 half-time lead. Each school scored once in the second half. Zahn accounted for two TDs while freshman Kirk Brandon scored the third. DENISON 73 OHIO NORTHERN ... 0 Using every member of the squad, Denison routed a small Ohio Northern team 73-0. The eleven touchdowns were split between Smith (2), Wolfe (2), Shell (2), Nadzak, Wagner, Dudley, Stillwagon and Harger. DENISON 34 OBERUN 7 With Smith again turning in a sparkling performance of three TDs and outstanding defense, Denison rolled over a larger and slightly favored Oberlin eleven 34-7. Bran- don and Rogers scored the other two Big Red touchdowns while an alert defense cut off all Oberlin comeback attempts. The lone Oberlin tally came well along in the fourth period. DENISON 35 OHIO WESLEYAN ... 12 In the final game of the season Denison came from behind in the third and fourth quarters to sweep their arch rival Ohio Wes- leyan from the field. Smith sped over for three touchdowns while Hollister passed well and handled the ball expertly at the quarter- back spot. After two early OW scores, the line became practically impenetrable through the defensive work of S avage, Tanski and Wagner. Zahn and Brandon each scored once. At the end of the contest each senior received an ovation as he left the field — a fitting gesture for a well played game and a fine season. The Denison team moves into action against the Kenyon squad. Homecoming Homecoming is an annual tribute to Deni- son alumni. Ex-Denisonians come to Granville to see old friends, reminisce and mingle with the present students. The Homecoming parade, Alumni lunch, football game, fraternity and sorority dinners and Homecoming dance pro- vide a busy and fun-filled day for all. ■ Freshmen, dressed-up for the Pajama Parade, and upperclass- men find the pep rally and bon- fire an excellent way to get spirit for the next day ' s game. Sparked by the theme Denison — This is Your Life, the campus went all out for the Kenyon Homecoming football game, October 6. The campus was adorned with costumed coeds, decorated sorority houses and fresh- man dorms and elaborate floats, all depicting various phases of Denison ' s past. Homecoming Here Comes the Big Red! The Big Red Indian welcomes the alums. The highlight of the day is the football game and the presentation of the queen and her court. Under the excellent first year coaching of Tristram Coffin, Denison ' s soccer team rolled to its first victorious season in its five years of play. The season ' s outset found 10 returning lettermen plus 10 freshmen. By the end of the season the team was rated seventh in the country and first in the Ohio Conference. Its record was 6 wins, 2 losses, and 2 ties. The season got off to a spirited start with unexpected victories over Wesleyan 8-1, Ohio University 8-2 and Western Reserve 9-1. In these three games the season ' s top scorer, Shaw Emmons, booted a total of 1 1 goals. At Ohio State, Denison lost a closely contested game in double overtime, 4-3. The following week Denison went into overtime again against Slippery Rock and tied 1-1. Goalie Joe Roth- man played an outstanding game making twenty saves. Brit Davis and Tom Thompson both played a fine defensive game at the fullback spot. FIRST ROW: J. Rothman, K. James, E. Trumbull, J. Patton, D. Hwang, A. Martinez, E. Sanchez, D. Davis. At Dayton, Dick Coulter with 2 goals paced the team to a 4-2 victory. The most anticipated game of the season was with Kenyon, Denison ' s traditional rival. Showing themselves equal to the occasion the Big Red won it 3-1. Trumbull, Coulter, Sanchez and Creelman together accounted for the D.U. goals. Pittsburgh and Oberlin were the two toughest teams that the booters faced all year. At the end of regulation play in each game the score was tied. In the final five seconds of the second overtime period Pitt scored to edge out the Big Reds, whereas under the same conditions Oberlin was held scoreless for a tie score. After a somewhat shaky start the Denison Basketball team ripped through one of the best seasons on their record for a 1 3-3 second place conference standing and a 16-5 overall record. After being upset in their first two conference starts the Big Red suddenly caught fire and raced through their last sixteen O.A.C. tilts with only one loss (by 3 points to Wooster) to mar their record. The close of the season found the team ' s average to be a noteworthy 78.3. The end of the season also brought to a close the record shattering career of Lou Earp Mitchell. Although injuries held him to a 17.4 average this year, Lou had compiled a four year average of 20.4 points per game and had set an all time high record of 1,532 points. His career records include most field goals 577, most free throws 478, and most rebounds 208. Lou is the only Denison player to score 300 or more points per season for four years. This year he was again on the all-conference squad and was runner up in the voting for the league ' s MVP award. Mitchell and Gearhart out jump two Ohio Wes- leyan players for a rebound. Denison ' s quintet break for a missed Capital foul shot on their home court. 55 Captain Wilber Hoot, also a senior, lived up to the reputation for calmness and clear thinking under fire that had warranted his election as team leader. His consiste nt scoring ability earned for him a season ' s average of 13,8 and a 75.2% career record in freethrows. Another bright spot in the season was captain elect Bob Branand ' s emergence as a steady scorer and regular on the team. Playng the pivot, 6 ' A Branand led the team in rebounds with 288 in 17 games for a 15.2 average. He was also second in scoring with 14.2 average and was awarded the Mike Gregory Most Valuable Player award. For- wards Bob Phillips and Phil Semler, recipient of the team ' s Most Valuable award along with guard Ed Heekin, who Coach Swinderman has called a real thinker on the court, also gave a steady com- bination of ball handling and scoring and contrib- uted greatly to the squad ' s success. During the regular season, by far the most thrilling Denison victory was a 55-54 decision over Ohio Wesleyan who had taken the Indoor Conference championship and who later won the Outdoor title. Although the team broke even for both the Indoor and Outdoor seasons, four school records were shattered. New indoor school records were established by Zahn in the pole vault (13 ' 5 ) and Still- wagon in the broadjump (22 ' 5 ). On the outdoor track a record in the mile relay was set by Marv Smith, Walt Wolfe, Steve Evans and Paul Dunham. The squad under the coaching of Keith Piper went on to take third place in the Ohio Conference. Outstanding individual performances helped maintain a high caliber of play throughout the season. Jim Sebring batted .485 which placed him among the top three hitters in the conference. George Thompson, having pitched twenty-three scoreless innings that extended over three games, ended the season with an earned run average of 1.20. Outfielder Bill Fleming hit two successive home runs and a double against Kenyon, which proved to be the best single display of power during the season. Some newcomers to the ball team also were a welcome addition. Freshmen Dick Cash, Dick Coulter and Dave Hinz all were in the starting lineups and showed the potential needed for a consistently winning ball club in future years. Jim Sebring was elected captain for the 1958 squad and he received the most valuable player award for this year. 64 !C=3 GP AB H B6 SO RBI AVG. 2 1 1 0 0 0 1.000 9 33 16 7 4 10 .485 9 33 10 6 4 3 .303 9 27 8 5 1 1 9 .296 9 35 10 9 7 6 .286 9 29 7 10 6 2 .241 9 31 7 5 7 0 .226 8 28 6 2 10 7 .214 3 10 2 1 0 1 .200 7 23 4 4 7 1 .174 5 8 1 0 0 1 .125 5 18 2 2 9 0 .1 1 1 7 24 1 3 6 1 .042 1 1 0 0 0 0 .000 PITCHING G IP W L H R ERA BB SO George Thompson 5 46 3 2 26 8 1 .20 1 3 25 Bill Hoot 1 6 10 3 3 3.00 6 6 Dick Cash 3 21 2 0 10 8 3.43 15 15 Ron Gearhart 1 8 0 1 9 8 7.88 3 3 SCHEDULE Denison 7 Denison 6 Denison 6 Denison 3 Denison 1 4 Denison 3 Denison 6 Denison 3 Denison 1 —SCORES Otterbein 8 Oberlin 0 Kenyon 2 Mount Union .. 0 Capital .. 8 Wittenberg .... 4 Capital 1 Otterbein 1 Muskingum .... 3 Left fielder Jim Sebring led the team in batting with an average of .485 for nine games. Organized as Chi Psi Delta, a local sorority, the Denison chapter became national in June, 1929. This year the Thetas added an original note to the social calendar. Before Christmas they held a bazaar for the purpose of raising money for a new addition to their house. To say the least, it was a huge success. The ceremonies are over and the pledges and actives relax. This curious group highlighted the Pledge Formal with their original entertainment. 77 Delta Delta Delta Delta Chi of Delta Delta Delta was the second national sorority to be installed on the Denison campus. To Midnight Coshocton . . . Birthplace of Specialty Advertising A Yankee drummer ' s visit to a small Ohio town ... a few yards of burlap . . . and an IDEA. They fathered a multi-million dollar industry. Jasper Meek had a problem. He had to sell more job printing to show a profit with his weekly newspaper, the Coshocton Age. Earlier, Joseph Medill had edited the Age before he moved on to Chicago to start The Tribune. With faith in himself and his home town, Editor Meek searched for the answer. In the fall of ' 86 a drummer brought Coshocton a new sales stunt: Storekeepers distributed his imitation green- backs. Each greenback was good for a cash discount at a store. That fellow has a good idea, Meek ruminated as he walked along Main Street. He made it pay for merchants to give something away. Just then a group of skylarking school children ran by. One of them dropped his schoolbooks in the dust almost at the editor ' s feet. Then Jasper Meek got the idea. Yes, a man in business needs friends, he repeated. The next afternoon Meek walked into the store of his friend Caldwell, the shoe dealer, and unwrapped a neat burlap bag about 12 x 15 inches in size. A bag for carrying schoolbooks, he said, and suggested that the shoe dealer buy the bags from him and give them away. Your name will be printed here in large type, he explained, and your advertising will be seen wherever children carry their books. The logic of Editor Meek ' s idea was apparent to the shoe dealer. He signed the first specialty advertising order in history. In a simple neighborly transaction between two small businessmen began an idea that resulted in Shaw-Barton, Inc., some 54 years later, today one of the country ' s largest calendar and specialty advertising companies. Give a person something useful, said Meek, and he ' ll remember you when he ' s placing his business. Meek was right 70 yars ago, his idea is right today, and tomorrow. For human nature doesn ' t change.
