As Texas celebrates her 150th birth- day, Denison schools claim a footnote in the history of education. McDaniel is the site of the first graded free public school in the state. Early Denison settlers gave land and buildings dedicated to educating the youth of the community. They realized, as current citizens do, that the future of the country rests in the young people and their educational preparation to assume their roles as decision makers. The Spirit Continues 7

Marlene Fritts is reignin Homecoming Queen By Harold Allison Marlene Fritts was named Homecoming Queen in halftime ceremonies of the Yellow jacket game against Allen, October 18. Fritts, a senior, is head varsity cheerleader and is also editor of the Yellow jacket Yearbook. She has been a cheerleader since the eighth rade and has served as DenTeens vice president ang a member of the Student Council for three years. A two-year member of Spanish Club, she served as vice president last year and secretary this year. She is presently in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was sweetheart last year. She is a three-year member ofthe United Service Club. Fritts plans to attend Abilene Christian University to major in dental hygiene and advertising. Homecoming, wet and exciting, was filled with anxiety and hard work to make it come true. Student Council vice resident Dylan Stafford crowned Fritts, below, while her father, james Fritts, served as escort. Rain that cancelled the homecoming parade, also made t e field too muddy for use in the halftime ceremonies. Nominees and their fathers were presented in the stands for the crowning. The Big Day f Homecoming festivities started early in a drenching rain as the queen nominees and their escorts gathered for the pep assembly at 9:30 a.m. Mike Fellinger escorts Fritts in the presenta- tion of candidates to the students before the votes are cast.
