Winning Spirit Starts jackets On Our Way Up The 1982-83 school year has been nothing but success. With the help of Coach Marty Griswell the coaching staff and hard work and dedication of the layers, the varsity football team ended the season with a 7-3 record, that is quite a change from the 1982 record of 2-8. And with the better record came Ye Old Battle Axe, something this school hasn't seen since 1968. Shannon Stewart expresses her thoughts of the Sherman - Denison game like this: jackets - 28, Bearcats - 10 The bleachers were filled that fateful nightg The stadium lights were burning bright Thoughts of victor filled the crowd Gausin many to clieer out loud. The jacicets took the field and the Bearcats, too. The atter bringing many hisses and boos. Our jacket team won the toss, just one small step toward the Bearcat loss. is 1- ' The kick was off. We ran it back A For the very first play of the jacket attack. Sherman was happy to be the first to score - Little did they know what was in store. We went into the half, Sherman - 10, Denison - 7. Those Bearcats thought they were in football heaven. It seemed the refs were on their side Until Sherman clips became too hard to hide. That's when Denison began to win. We scored a touchdowng . Denison - 14, Sherman - 10. By the fourth quarter, the jackets were hot - Determined to win, they would not be stopped, there X j ,ppp p ik M' 'i NMA A were smiles on our faces as we cheered them on. For we knew the Axe was coming home. Our jackets scored again and again. The final score - jackets - 28, Bearcats - 10. The baseball team won second in district. Vincent Moore broke the school record for high jump while the track teams had more regional qualifiers than in past years. Golor Guard won their first trophy for Outstanding Color Guard. The drill team found that long hours of work and reparation paid off when Stingerettes won Sweepstakes at summer camp. Students scored, on an average, higher on TABS tests and ASVAB tests than students have in previous years. UIL winners did extremely well this year. Denison placed second in district with 128 points beating Sherman, Denton, Weatherford, and Wichita Falls. Greg Stewart and james Brown won first in state for Industrial Coop Training in April. This is just a partial account of this years students' accomplishments. Everybody can take credit for the success of this school year. It was not just outstanding names and faces but the contribution of every Yellow jacket. This year was only the beginning. There is no place to go but up.
