The 1962 Yellow Jacket DENISON HIGH SCHOOL Denison, Texas THSPA CONTENTS Directors Act I.................Activities Act II.............Personalities Act III Athletics Cast.....................Classes Advertisements FOREWORD The aim of the Yellow Jacket Staff was to portray the spirit of our school year and its activities in the form of a play. The students of DHS, who composed the cast, acted out this play which gave the staff an opportunity to record its events. For some, this is the first in a series of plays; but for others, it is the last play we shall perform in Denison High School. The staff presents this annual as that play performed during 1961-'62 at DHS. As you turn the pages of this book, we hope you will relive the role you played in its performance. ADMINISTRATION Mrs. Ruth Brigham, Cafeteria Supervisor, and Mr. O. C. Mulkey, Director of Curriculum, discuss a copy of Your School Year. Mrs. Lorine Riffell. Secretary to the Business Manager, answers the telephone, while Mrs. Maxine Gentry, Bookkeeper, and Mr. Lee Elder. Business Manager, check an invoice. 4 J The North Annex houses the General Metals Shop, Wood Shop, Vocational Agriculture Department, and Band Hall. ANNEXES The noon rush and that long line make the Cafeteria an unforgettable place. The Field House is a symbol of hard work put out by DHS athletes to achieve victory for our school. DEDICATION To express our gratitude and sincere appreciation for all that she has done as a teacher, counselor, and friend, we the staff of the 1962 Yellow Jacket dedicate this edition of our yearbook to MRS. E. G. JOHNSON. It is impossible to estimate the number of lives and homes that have been touched by Mrs. Johnson's rich way of life through her wise counseling as a Girl Reserve and Y-Teen sponsor. She has prepared many of her students for careers in the business world, but she has equalled or excelled her teaching in helping each of us to be a better person. 7 Mr. H. W. Goodgion, Superintendent: Mr. R. S. Goodman. Mr. B. V. Hammond: and Mr. Keith Hubbard. Mr. C. B. Middleton, Mr. Ben McKinney. Mr. Lee Elder, Business Manager President: Mr. Robert Cherry. Vice President: Mr. Jack Hesse, Secretary: These School Board members served well at a job that demands sacrifice of time with little or no compensation. Their only reward was the hope for a better education for every Denison High School student. 7 ttene4ted SwW 8 Mr. R. S. Goodman. Mr. Jack Hesse. Mr. B. V. Hammond and Mr. Keith Hubbard assumed the responsibility of preparing a school building improvement program. School Board Mr. C. B. Middleton. Mr. Ben McKinney. Mr. Robert Cherry, and Mr. R. S. Goodman planned the financial budget for the school district for the year. The function of the school board is three-fold; make the policy for the schools, put into operation these plans and policies, and appraise, through careful examination and study of facts and conditions, the efficiency and value of the activities. iet t6e fan oun cOtcutta, 9 MR. STRIPLING Assistant Principal Some of Mr. Stripling's responsibilities were selling football and basketball tickets, arranging contracts with other schools for the games, acting as custodian of text books, and making out the schedules for the Sophomore Class. He also gave and graded the academic tests and answered the correspondence concerning them. With all these tasks he was still able to promote the fire and safety program. Mary Hoedebeclc. Judy Coffman. Mary Viana. and Steve Ross were waiting to buy their tickets for the Denison vs. Mesquite game. 12 euc e cou t4e£c up MR. J. S. KIMBLE Counselor The friendly smile and sincere attitude of Mr. Kimble, Counselor of DHS, helped him in his association with the students. Perhaps his greatest responsibilities were arranging student schedules and testing for our prized scholastic awards. Besides this, he always had time to help any student plan his future along the vocational, military, or college line. He also took time to lead many boys to a fuller life through his sponsorship of the Hi-Y Club. Kenneth Shepherd. Margaret Gattis, Lyn-ett© Martin. Enid Myers and Carol Cox wanted to see Mr. Kimble about schedule changes and Merit Scholarship Test results. yotUa cuene achieved. 13 Faculty MRS. Problems and suggestions are brought up, discussed, and voted on during the meeting. The projects the Student Council promoted this year were publishing and distributing the student directories, sponsoring the Homecoming Parade, and providing assemblies for the student body. One of the most interesting and profitable experiences of the Council was sponsoring of a foreign exchange student on the campus. The students enjoyed their association with Mats Ericsson of Sweden. a tiaCcutce, Kcce an . Elladean Ballou. Mary Testa. David Burks. Margaret Gattis. Mike Fox. The Y-Teen Spring Formal is an annual event looked forward to by all of the Y-Teens as one of the main parties of the year. Junior Y-Teens The Junior Y-Teens accepted and upheld the meaning of their symbol, a triangle within a circle. The three sides of the triangle represent a perfect body, a keen mind and a Christlike spirit. The circle represents a personality as it touches others in work, fellowship, and worship. As the body, mind, and spirit grow, then shall the personality grow also. To develop a keen mind, a perfect body, a Christlike spirit, and a glowing personality is the desire of each Y-Teen. , el yfred a, (fyni CiciK ttfattefiAene. Sophomore Y-Teens Keeping their minds on the code, Gracious in manner, impartial in judgment, reverent to God, the sophomore Y-Teens remember the Swing-in, when they were initiated as pledges, and the Recognition Service when they became recognized members of the organization. Their first large project was decorating the cafeteria for the Y-Teen Spring Formal. Swing-in is a big occasion for Sophomore Y-Teens. Here, some sophomore girls are being initiated into the club. Buzz The Buzz page, which appeared ea Sunday in the Denison Herald, was e product of the work done by the Buzz Staff. , There were deadlines to be met eacn week, and the staff met them without fail. Preparation of the paper for publication included the gathering of news each week, writing it up, typing, proofreading, and delivering it to the Herald office. One of the biggest problems was headline writing, which can be a difficult job, for words seldom seem to contain the number of units required to fit in the allotted space; but the Buzz always went to press on time. nec videeC events. Membership was earned by a point system, mainly in the field of acting or assisting on the stage crew. Short plays and skits were produced by the group for pep rallies and assemblies. Chorus Denison choral program is fast becoming a popular student activity. During the year, the students presented programs for student body assemblies, as well as PTA programs, the annual Teacher Appreciation Banquet, the Lions Club, Ki-wanis Club, Rotary Club, and various other organizations in town. The highlight of the fall semester for the select choir was the annual trip to East Texas State College, where they participated in a Christmas Carol Service. The DHS choirs have presented two special numbers at this program for the past three years. cuCtcvuzl Cecuitcf z cd e cUc neHt. Study Skills Individual study, note taking, and outlining daily time budgets were emphasized as the best ways to develop personal study habits which are the key to a successful student. Study Skills was an experimental class at DHS this year. The purpose of the class was to direct students in forming more effective study habits and to encourage parents to provide the proper environment for study. Classroom Snaps Eddie Weger and Eddy Begey put the final touch to a desk before it was sprayed. This was one of the many projects of the boys during the year. Two of Mrs. Sitz's fifth period students. Charlotte Pirkle and Tony Levacy. practiced weighing chemicals on the analytical balance. The balance, used for precision weighing, was new in the Science Department this year. The Commercial Department was one of the largest departments in school with approximately 300 students attending classes daily. Here one of Mrs. Johnson's typing classes is practicing the proper method of constructing letters. Howdy Dance Old friends became reacquainted and met new ones at the Howdy Dance this year. A new type of dancing party, the mixer, was introduced by a trained dance couple. A Yearly Chore Remember picture taking time? Boy! Was the annual staff glad to get through with that job, although the students enjoyed missing a few classes to get their pictures made. Prom The most exciting event of the year is the prom, which is the highlight of our school year socially. The Juniors had the task of decorating the gym; and when prom night finally arrived, the Seniors enjoyed their last social event at DHS. Pep Rally So, Jackets, Win District! was the yell at the pep rally preceding the Denison-Sherman game. Using black and gold pom poms and making signs to support the Jackets, the student body boosted spirit of the Jackets to win the district and bidistrict titles. Y-Teen Recognition Service As a part of the Annual Recognition Service, a group of Y-Teens presented the play, Children of the Inn. This scene from the play shows Abiathar (Lana Watkins) with his wife Rachel (Sandra Braswell) and his children, Miriam (Lynette Martin) and Isaacs (Betty Carroll), greeting the three wise men, Susie Nelson, Dottie Jones, and Andrea Freeman. The play showed the true spirit of Christmas when Miriam, the crippled girl, walked again after seeing the Christ Child in the manger. Happy Holidays was the wish of the Senior Class to the lower class-men at the Senior Holiday Party. Dancing and other good entertainment provided enjoyment for the guests. Mothers attended the Mother-Daughter Banquet as guests of honor, made ties for Recognition Service, chaperoned the Manless Dance, and, as shown here, made corsages for Neewollah. PTA Executive Committee The responsibility of an effective parent-teacher organization in our school lies with the PTA Executive Committee. Members of the committee planned an effective program for the year. One of the most popular programs was the back-to-school night for parents, which more than three hundred people attended. PTA Back-to-School Night The PTA sponsored a back-to-school night for the first time this year. The parents were given a copy of the child's schedule and attended five-minute classes. Parents became familiar with their child's school environment and their teachers. This program promoted a better understanding of parent-student life. 56 7 tai tecC fiewwtel tuzi tt zi ted z t vuCen£ f Custodians Mr. Ramsey, Mr. Carr, Mrs. Coffin, and Mr. Potts kept the building in order and repair. W. J. SEABAUGH, JR. Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For though from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar.
