Upon . accomplishing this feat, the Yellow , . , vvvvg , Y Jackets earned their third district title since 1922. The Yel!o'-V Jackets during this season were compelled to play against much heavier teams. This was a great disadvantage, but the team made up for it in speed, skill, and the will to win. We must not forget Coaches Les Cranfil and Tommy Tipps who, on their first year here, carried the team through a very successful sea- son. Brooks Williford, Glenn Land, and Bill Linden, all lettermen for 1945-'46, returned and were strong contenders for the District titles. Bobby Williford, a freshman, joined the team and made a fine record. Matches were played against Sherman, Bonham, Paris. With the excep- tion of the contests against the colleges, Brooks Williford was unde- feated. He and Bobby provedi too strong in doubles for most of the teams played. Brooks and Glenn Land played Highland Park's teams at Denton in the Districst Meet and lost in a close match. Bill Linden played singles at the district meet. He defeated Sherman, and then lost to Highland Park in the finals, to take second place. At the end of the first half of the season the Jackets were tied for first place, but the team was then weakened considerably by the graduation of three of the starting line-up. Then to make things even tougher, Greenville's six-foot-eleven-inch Marcus Freiburger became eligible. t While at the same time over Gainesville way, Shooting Sam Stucky' was hitting the basket from every angle. The Jackets put up a very hard A 3 fight, but it's hard to win from a team with players like those named.
