GSW 109 5 SUPERINTENDENT B. MCDANIEL You are leaving high school to face the most perplexing situation of many gen- erations. Each country and the whole world are in an unsettled condition. Your gener- ation must bring order out of chaos. Whether you continue your education in college or enter at once into your chosen vocation, you will me-et a real challenge. This chal- lenge will require the best in you. You can meet it, and you can win. To win you must have ax plan just a builder has a plan. Your plan must be a long range one. Into this plan you must weave your ideals of handwork, fair play, duty to your job and to your employer, loyalty in all things, service to your fellow man and the highest ideals of Christian citizenship. All these, plus a healthy body, will make of you a successful and well-rounded citizen. 4 gczcufty PRINCIPAL J. L. DICKSON ln order for a democratic society to survive, each individual must strive to develop his capacities to the utmost and, at the same time, work in harmony with his fellow men for the common good of all. Now that the Victory is won, it is the task of your generation to carry on the undimmed torch of American liberty and independence. It is the duty and privilege of all young Americans to do their best to retain and improve our democratic principles so that you may live a riger life for yourselves and your community. Such a feat never before had been accomplished by a Denison High School football team. With our victory over the Bearcats, the Jackets earned second place in District 5-AA. We are also proud of the good fight the team put up against the powerful Waco Tigers, who finished their season as a co-champion of AA football in Texas. On numerous oc- casions the Jackets were compelled to play against heavier teams, a great disadvantage, however, the team made up for lack of Weight in speed, skill, and the display of fighting spirit. Arnold Johnson carried the entire coaching burden last season, and his work with the boys was magnificent. The entire school Wishes to thank Coach Johnson, Co-captains Bob Garner and Charlie Jackson Cboth members of the mythical All-District teamj and every other member of the Jackets for giving us a season that will long be remembered as outstanding for Denison High School. Glenn Land and Bill Linden played doubles. These. boys were defeated in District play by Highland Park. Land and Linden Worked hard all the year and should win some matches for the school next year. Other boys who played on the squad were Dick Wood, Word Burtis, Tommy Loy, Carl Waltz, and Pat Hughes. Practice matches were played against Sherman, Bon- ham, and Sulphur Springs. This loss ruined the Bearcat's chances of being king-pin . The team practiced long and hard and played the game fair and square, however, the boys encountered several difficulties during the season, not' the least of which was Marcus Frieberger, six-foot nine-inch All State forward from Greenville, the District Champs. He always was able to ring up a large score regardless of the opposition. Coach Rack Golding worked tirelessly with the team and should be given cr-edit for the fine showings that the Jackets made, whether they won or lost. Next year all the lettermen and squadmen are eligible to return to the maple and should givc the school and the town a team that we will really be proud of. Pb Jack Fawcett ....,, ffa... At the State Meet last April our team in the Information Please Contest tied with two other teams for first place. Joye McHorse won third-place in the piano solo division. On April 26 and 27, we sent a large dele- gation to the state meet in Austin. Representatives from our club entered the Inform- ation Please, piano solo, extemporaneous speaking, essay, and vocal ensemble contests. During this year we have had several guest speakers, all of whom gave us very in- formative talks on their respective fields. Sgt. Earl Thurman discuss-ed the Philippine Islands and their inhabitants, Lt. fjgb Milo Cox characterized the Caribbean Area, Marine Corps Pilot Ray Schiflett elaborated on the natives of the South-West Pacific, Mrs. Carl Lehenert presented to the club a series of very colorful slides on the Grand Canyon, and a representative of the Mexican Government gave us many interesting facts about conditions in Mexico and Spain. These talks have helped us understand the peoples of Latin America and related areas b-etter and have contributed greatly to our efforts of cementing our relations and creating good will with the other countries of the Americas.
