COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT MR. J. S. KIMBLE, Head of Department MISS BERTHA KNAUR, Typing , MISS RACHAEL WIEST, Typing and Advertising The commercial department was begun at the Denison High School in 1914 At that time the department was made up of stenography, which consisted of short- hand and typing, required two periods a day, and was taught in the tenth and eleventh grades. Bookkeeping, commercial arithmetic, and commercial geography lnzfse all remained unchanged. Salesmanship, advertising, and junior business training' have been added since then. Mr. YV. F. Flannigan started the deparinent, and it has con- tinued to grow. The present enrollment is 533. Bookkeeping has been taught in the sumo room, 5312, since the department begun. Typing increased so rapidly in popularity that it became necessary to move Lo the large double room, 317, which it now occupies. This room contains 45 typewriters, and is used seven periods a day. The only student organization in the department is the Senior Stenogrzipliers which is composed of typing and shorthand students, and whose pictures appear on the following pages. 22
