We stood on the doorstep when school time was o'er, And longed for the time to go by, And now' it is gone and we stand here tonight To bid our dear schoolmates good-bye. Good-bye, dear old schoolmates, Good-bye to our school, God bless those we leave with a sigh, W'e'll cherish fond memories when we G'ood-bye, dear old schoolmates, good-bye. There are many temptations with which we shall meet, And sad, mournful cenes every day, But the faces at school, Oh, we never shall greet, Their forms will be so far away, But we'1l think of the dear old stone step at the door, And oft drop a tear from our eye, We'll stand in our dreams as we stand here tonight, To bid our dear schoolmates good-bye. .25- are away HUGH ANDERSON BOB BAILEY CRAIG BANZER CLIFTON BELL LEONARD BUTCHER J. Its membership includes teen-age Hirls of all races and nationalities.. It is an honor to belong to the Girl Reserve Club, for it is more than just a social club. It teaches girls to think, to develop talents, to be tolerant, to be considerate, to play fair. It teaches them to enjoy outdoor diversions, games and sports. The symbol, blue triangle enclosed in a circle, has a meaning all its own. The triangle represents the three sides of a growing personality....body, mind and spirit. It shows their importance each to the other. The circle is the expression of this personality as it comes in contact with others. As a, girl develops, so also does the triangle and the circle made by the perfect body, keen mind, and Christian like spirit. This is the ideal for which Girl Reserve strives. Eight years ago the Girl Reserve Club of Deniosn was organized under the sponsorship of Mrs. W. B. Munson, Jr. Mrs. Munson has been the sponsor since that time, and with her councilors, Miss Dovie Mae Arnold, Mrs. G. E. Swindell, Miss Thelma Burleson, Miss Elizabeth Groves, Miss Mary Etta Lipscomb, Miss Bertha Knaur, and Miss Pauline Jouvenat, lends sympathetic understanding and assistance. -T8- ,AM . 6 . x Helen Hodges, Mary Marie Jennings. JACKETEERS Under the able direction of Miss Glenda Bevill, Faculty Sponsor, there was organized in October of 1937 a special cheering section composed of former members of the Pep Squad, together with other girls interested in belonging to such an organization. Dressed in their snappy uniforms of gold and black, they stepped smartly Down Main Street behind the Denison High School Band, stopping at intersections for yells as the crowd of students gathered round the yell leaders during impromptu football parades preceding major football games. Marshalled in military splendor by Drum Majors Edna Mae Steele and Janie Starnes on Munson Field between halves of the games, they executed many novel stunts and specialties. One of the most unusual specialties was a drill done with fireworks. The girls marched onto the field and formed a Yellow Jacket, after which the field lights were extinguished and the sparklers were lighted. Then the scintellating Yellow Jacket moved down the field in great splendor. The Armistice stunt was made impressive by the use of small red, white and blue flags to form a huge image of Old Glory. After this, a very intricate double criss-cross was formed by the Jacketeers and Band combined. On Thanksgiving the Band and the Jacketeers marched onto the field and made a double criss- cross, after which the girls marched in between the ranks of the band and formed a B for the Bonham visitors and a D for Denison High School. .92. Land of Kansas City, March 24, 1919. The mother chapter met on that date with nine Kansas City boys, one of whom was Mr. Levy, now an advisor of the Greenville chapter. The first DeMolay was Louis G. Lower who is now Assistant to the Grand Master Councilor. The foundation of the order, Love of Parents, Reverence for Sacred Things, Patriotism, Cleanliness, Fidelity, and Comradeshipf' appealed to the Masonic Fraternity in Kansas City, and since that time nearly all chapters have been sponsored by some Masonic body. Membership, however, is not limited to the sons of Masons, but is open to all young boys between the ages of 15 and 21, of good morals and upstandinfz character. Since its organization, over five thousand boys have knelt before the altar of DeMolay and pledged themselves to hitch principles and clean living. There are one hundred fifty thousand members at present. These belong to thirteen hundred chapters located in every state of trhe Union, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Phillipines and France. There are three chapters in the United State Navy. De-Molays observe five obligatory days either in church service or a private service. These special occassions are: Devotional Day, Patriots' Day, DeMolay Day of Comfort, Educational Day, and Parents' Day all of which are occidnously observed by members. Entertainment features on this year's calendar included two formal dances, a Weiner roast, a treasure hunt, and several banquets for candidates. A trip to Greenville was made by a group to assist the Greenville chapter as city officials-for-a-day on. City Day. The Denison Chapter headed by Master Councillors, Jimmy Home and Harleston Crites, Senior Councillor Marlon Hodge, and Junior Councillor, Jack Sampsell have cooperated with other nearby chapters in educational and social events during: the 1937-28 term. -91- I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I . Before assuming his responsibilities as Line Coach of the Denison Jackets, he coached two years at Lubbock High School. He has spared no efforts in his work with the squad and in the two years he has produced two of the most powerful lines in the Di:-iiriet. Coach Malone, Mud Dauber and Track Coach, came to Denison in 1935 from Ell'aso Hitrh School. He is a graduate of N. T. S. T. C. Denton, and has done advanced work in the University of Southern California. His work in Denison has been to furnish the Jackets with, suitable material from which to pick their regulars, having: coached the Mud Daubers three years. This year Mr. Malone had an excellent track tram. sending: seven boys to the Repzional Meet at Denton. At the State Meet in Austin, his entry, Oliver Jackson, won State Championship in liroad Jump. -97- 1937 FCICITBALL 1937 CD-CAPTAINS FRED TAYLOR M. E. VANDIVER OLIVER JACKSON X 98 J. K. Jones, R. H. His services will be greatly missed next season. FRED TAYLORi'I'his was Fred's third and last year to play for the Jackets. He was the main instigator of the fighting spirit of 1937 and was voted the most valuable player on the team. LARRY PHILLIPSiWas probably the hardest running back in District No. 5 this year. This was his first year as a regular and his line plunges and tackle thrusts were a big part of the Jackets' success. His services will be a great asset to the Jackets of '38. ART RUTLEDGELAH was one of the best hustlers on the squad: despite his light weight he played a great part of the games. He was always on the spot when called and played any position in the backfield. This is his last year. ELVIS BLANKlNSHIPZ Tuffy filled the shoes of Dale Shearer after Dale's knee was in- jured and did an excellent job of substitution. WALTER LEWIS...When a gap was opened in the line by injuries or any other jinx that might befall the Jackets, Walter was right there to fill it. He trained hard and hustled. These two qualities earned for him his letter. COACH STOLLENWERCK ASSISTANT COACH McWlLLIAMS GENE DALE SCI-ILEUSETGene played every minute of every game this year and thereby proved that he was one of the steadiest players on the team. He has one more year and his end play will probably deal many opponents much misery. SI-IEARER,Dale was unfortunate in in- juring his knee in the first game of the season, but because of his fighting spirit he got to play several times during the season. This is his last year. M. E. VANDIVERt F'at is a three year letter- ROY M man. His work on defense will be missed by the Jackets of '38. He was one of the captains and did his work well. cCORKLE- Short.y was declared the best tackle in the district this year in his third year to play. He has one more year and is to he shifted to half-back next year so as to add to the power in the backfield. He should, with his power and speed, be one of the best backs in the state. ROY OWNBY, ,The fast charging and hard block- BILL H ing of Roy will be hard to replace by any guard that fi,lls his position next year. He was picked on the all-district team. This was his first and last year as a regular. EMPKINS, Bi1l was the greenest man on the team at the first of the year, but as the season went along he developed into ll ranked with the rest. He is to be shifted to the tackle post next year. He has developed speed which with his weight should be a real asset to the '38 Jackets. guard that LEE BRlGHAM..Lee was one of the most con- sistent players on the squad. He was always ready to go and his talk and pep pulled the boys out of many slumps when things looked bad in the games. His position will be hard to fill and he will be greatly missed. ED I-IARRIS-,Ed was the best of the ball carriers because he was always on the spot when help was needed. With his lung punts and ac- curate passes he will be undoubtedly one of the best halfbacks in the state next year. He has one more year. which will be his third on the Jacket team. mfr .-5593: Q . filifliifil 51 A' ,if M . BELTON DEESE,Although not a regular, Belton kept the first string boys working hard to hold their positions. This is his last year. GLENDON FLOWERS?.Is one of the scrappiest fighters on the squad. He has another year to prove his ability. , JAMES PERRY?..With his punting, passing, and running made a great little substitute. THERON HO0PER,.. Lil Brother played both center and guard proving worthy at both posts. He received his letter this year. ALBERT STEELEA.Has one more year with the Javkets and is a promising candidate for guard position. JAMES CR0UT...W:1s always on the spot when help was needed. He will probably be a first string center. C. W. SCOTTi, Goon although light, will be battl- ing for a regular berth next fall. RICHARD IRWlN,Another recruit for the back- field who was always ready to go. He carnc-d his letter this year. CLEMMONS McCOY, Clem turned in excellent work with th B team. Q-'I ,T 3 , 1937 FCICITBALL REVIEW 1937 The 1937 Yellow Jackets completed a very successful season. They won seven games lost two and tied 1. Considering the hard schedule they played, they made a very good showing in the Texas Inter- scholastic Football League. The season opened with a 13-6 defeat for the Jackets against the Greenville High Lions. Jack- son opened the scoring for the season on a long sweeping end run. As a whole, the team did not look so good in their opening game, but as the season progressed they began to improve steadily. The next few weeks saw the Yellow Jackets on the long end of the scoring. They defeated Durant High, 16-6: Ada, 7-0: McKinney 13-6 and North Dallas High School, 13-12. Jackson and Taylor accounted for most of the scores, with Harris, Mc-Corkle and Ownlay leading the way with excellent blocking. The first district game of the year was lost to Sherman by a 27-13 score. This game, however, was the second and last defeat of the year for the Yellow Jackets. The first half of the Denison-Sher- man game was ended in a 7-7 deadlock with the Jackets looking the best. Two bad breaks in the second half against the Jackets resulted in the Sherman scores. The Jackets rallied too late in the last quarter. October 29, saw the Yellow Jackets in Paris, where they handed out a 21-15 defeat to the Wildcats. Scoring twice in the first quarter with whirlwind rushing, and using the oldi Statue of Liberty play in the fourth, they climaxed the scoring and won the game. Phillips, Taylor and Jackson stood out in the backfiel with their ball carrying and Harris, Schleuse and McCorkle with their blocking. On November 11, the Jackets and Gainesville Leopards fought to a 7-7 tie. The Jackets, however, came out with more yardage gained from scrimmage and more first downs to their credit, and would have been awarded the decision of the District Championship had been involved, McCorkle, Schleuse, Hempkins, Harris, Ownby, Phillips, Taylor, and Jackson were the outstanding players of the game. The last game of the year was played on Thanksgiving day at Munson Stadium. The Yellow Jackets met the Bonham Purple Warriors and defeated them to the tune of 53-0. Scoring, apparently at will, the Jackets allowed the Warriors no respite from the time of the starting whistle till the closing shot of the game. The 1937 team placed three men on the all district team: Taylor, Full-back: Ownby, Guard: and McCorkle, Tackle. 0 WW Q! fi -106- e r yi 11304 f gm... TH E DAUBERS Glendon Flowers, Left End: J. Rowland, Right Half: B. Ballon, Left Half. The 1937 Dauber squad was probably the strongest that Denison has ever had. This year, as in every year since 1934, the Daubers were headed by coach O. J. Malone and some graduate from the Yellow Jacket squad. This year it was Bob Bremerman a graduate of 1936. In a total of eight years this season the Daubers scored to victory in 4, tied 2 and lost 2. Some of these Daubers will more than 'likely make strong bids for the first string berths on the Jackets in 1938. -107- YELLCIWJAC KET EAS KETBALL Art Rutledge, Howard Thomason, Ed. Three weeks later the Jackets were defeated by the Bonham Quintette 23-16. The third game of the season was played at Whitewright, the Yellow Jackets were defeated to the tune of 30-9. In the first home game the Jacket Quintette trounced Honey Grove by the score of 31-25. Later the Paris Wildcats defeated the Yellow Jackets fifth game 31-23. In a return game with the Honey Grove Quintette the Yellow Jackets eked out the score of 29-27. In another home game the Yellow Jackets defeated Whitewright 18-13. The Yellow Jackets after being defeated in their first game with the Paris Quintette, returned and defeated Paris 80-15. In their second game with Bonham, with the absence of Fred Taylor, managed to win with a score of 26-22. Weakened by injuries of regulars the Yellow Jackets were beaten severely by the Sherman Bearcats to the tune of 28-4. In the second game with the Durant Lions, the Yellow Jackets were defeated 30-24. In the last game of the season the Sherman Bearcats defeated the Yellow Jackets for the County Championship, the score being 25-16. DAU BER BAS KETBALL The primary purpose of Dauber Basketball is to develop future players for the Yellow Jacket team. This purpose was well carried out this year in that the team played three games: winning two, and losing the third by only one point. All three games were played with the Yellow Jacket B team. It is certain with the aid of the Daubers and Coach Malone to instruct them, Jacket basketball will improve in the coming years. .1o9- Q K 1.
