I think that I shall never see ' . A poem lovely as a tree. . A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the earth's sweet flowing breast: . A tree that looks at God all day, R And lifts her leafy arms to pray: I A tree that may in summer wear . A nest of robins in her hair: Upon whose bosom snow has laing . Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree. i N ---By Joyce Kilmer 5 l A H ' N - N I w . L, 1 -an-l fr -u J , -,il 1 'B Q. H. S. without a guiding hand such as ours to help you along. In fact, we feel sure that we will leave a few of our class behind to guide you. We feel that without their help it would take you a long time to be- come big enough to fill our places. We will, however, give you credit for rapid progress since your entrance in Denison High. When you first made your appearance upon the scene, we were all .in a nervous strain for fear we would trample on you in the hall. Now, your physical and mental growth has been such that we feel safe in even letting you cross the street To the Sophs, we offer congratulations on the event of your be- coming Juniors next year. We are sure you will not be so snobbish in the coming year since you will merely be Juniors instead of proud Sophomores. We have one charge to make to you. Please be kind and gentle to next year's Freshmen. Heretofore the care of the Freshmen has been our task but we leave it now to you feeling that you will discharge the duties as carefully as we have done. We know that you will have a very trying time if the Fish of the coming year have deteriorated any further than those of the present year. The name Fish will no longer suit them. They will have to be called minnows. As for you, our Freshman friends, we really don't understand how they expect you to take care of yourselves in such a large building as this one will be when the new addition is finished next year. We suppose they expect to develop you up to the point of car- ing for yourselves by giving you physical education in the new Gym. Our warning to you is that although you may be inclined to be snob- bish, since you will be proud Sophs, that it will be safer to keep your head down instead of up. If the coming Sth grade develops as suc- cessfully into flying tackles as your class has perfected, you will be in danger of finding yourself sprawling down the steps into the cafe- teria every time you come in contact with them. You will need all of your eyls open to see them coming. In spite of all your faults, the saying that ax little child shnll lead them, stlll holds true for ench of you: for you have certninly led us an merry chase. Of course we realize that it is not because you are any more brilliant than we are that you have had so many of your number on the Honor ltoll, but nevertheless we congratulate you on that score. You just don't have so many other important things on hand as we do. Seriously we think you have proved your- selves worthy of the distinction of being students of Denison High S hool und we hope that in the years before you, th.u you will even double the number of Honor Il ill Students. As at last word we charge you to keep and honor the good 1131118 of D. H. S., to uphold every enterprise undertaken by the school, and to prove Denison High to be what it is, the greatest and dearest High School in any State. My graceful carriage is an offset that causes envy and jealousy among all my friends. I have wonderful eye lashes, these droopy kind, that en- able me to cast shieky glances in all di- rections. Booth Huffaker: At times I almost love myself to death. I know for a fact that I can shuttle along and wave my Oxford bags better than Valentino himself. I have always taken great care to make myself appear to the very best advantage possible-thus far I have succeeded. ' Tommy Morrison: I am the champion good-looker. I can see admiration in the eyes of everyone I meet. My crowning glory is a mass of tiny ringlets that clus- ter about my head in alluring little waves --these cause no little amount of comment from the fair sex. Everyone adores my 'icupld-like physique, of which I am im- mensely proud. Billy Morgan: Sometimes I feel sorry for other men just because I'1n here. Ever since childhood I have been worthy of praise for anything I do. Don't think I'm egotistical, or anything like that, but when it comes to being witty and brilliant let me tell you right here I deliver the goods. Arthur Anderson: I'm different from other people, I never brag about myself. I am too modest and pure to tell other people just how fine I am. I have heard some people say tiattering things about themselves but I NEVER do. The prin- cipal reason why I don't is because some- one else always does it for me. Yes, I really believe I receive more compliments upon myself than any human being that has, as yet, lived. I know why, though, it is because I am so tall and impressive looking and have such a gallant, patroniz- ing air about me. Bruce Reed: It is a good thing for the universe in general that I am alive. I know more than anybody else about every- thing. Most people think it is strange that I really mean it when I say I love me, but it would be foolish to deny such a thing when anyone who chances to glance at me could see why such a state- ment could be verified. I'm just about the cutest thing that ever was, ever has been, or ever will be. Lester Lawhonz If it were not for me everyone would have terrible dispositions. I am just like a ray of sun streaming through the clouds of a storm. I have a beaming countenance of so cheerful a mien that my presence is desired at every gathering. I am a big favorite among the girls because I am so playful and so amus- ing. Volney Acheson: There should be more men like me. It takes people with a great amount of dignity, understanding of the human race, and a mind capable of solv- ing the problems that arise in connection with our govermnent. I have the pleas- ure of knowing that upon all occasions I can conduct myself in a manner equal to that of a king. My moral standards are high and I can truthfully say that I'm just the boy for any fellow's sister. They curl up at the ends just like Viola Dana's, and as for my size, well, I hate to admit it. but I'm just a cute height and my weight is in proportion. lfllizabeth Miller: I'm always the very life of every party but that doesn't make me think any more of myself. I am a wonderful swimmer, a divine dancer and a beautiful singer: however, you can over- look all these traits by the fact that I have a delightful smile. Amy Adrian: I dislike myself immense- ly because l'1n such a good sport and have such a lovable personality. l'm good at anything I undertake. I have a voice that can entertain a cosmopolitan audience be- cause I p11t so much expression into the most trivial things I say that they sound wise and cunning. I can play basketball to beat the band and when it comes to leading yells I'm the best yet. Gertrude Jones: I am a perfect dar- ling. I look so sweet when I walk be- cause I take such tiny, mincing: little steps. My hair is just curly enough to be fashionable and 1ny eyes are just bright enough to add animation to my face. My neck is a marvel, so round and white aml full of dimples. If I didn't have all of these womlerful features l'm quite sure I wculd be much happier. Lucille Calloway: I'm real sad some- times because I am S0 good-looking. My beautiful long hair makes me distinctive looking' and then, too, I'm just as neat as a pin. I have the prettiest mouth ever placed on a classical face. I'm so de- mure and sweet that it is impossible for anyone to keep from admiring IILQ. Now that is where the rub comes in. it is so annoying: to be forever and eternally fa- vorably 'commented on. Elain Foonrod: 0, ye sweet heavens, why have you treated me thus? I detest myself with a vigor that is venomed to the fullest extent with bitter hatred. My com- plexion is entirely too smooth and soft, my voice too modulated, and myself in general too unaffected ami unassuming. Marjorie Lee: Nobody knows how I hate myself for having such cute feet and a winning: personality. My cleverness causes such a demand to be made of me that I hardly have time for sleep. It's painful to have everybody like you and the bane of my existence is the fact that I have no enemies. Marie Ryan: Uh, Lord, why didst thou give me the distracting combination of soft, brown eyes and light hair? It makes me loathe aml despise myself, because, mmbined with an almost perfect complex- ion, it causes me to be irresistable to some people. l fear I'll always be miserable, since my good disposition makes enemies of eYel'yollt'.
