I . 5. l, 'l l ,il w l L l -'l KENNETH WILLIAMS, President FRED BADGETT, Treasurer 5 1 e RUTH CLARK, Vice-President SALLIE WILEY, Secretary i I 2 f' s l il, The great day came when this senior class of '25 gathered here at old D. H. S. li . from all the ward schools four years ago: It was a happy gathering, all were enthu- I ' ' siastic over the studies and'were working hard to reach the top of the ladder. It is I X true, the class is not nearly as large as it was in the freshman year, for year after year a number of students would drop out, until now there are approximately ninety I who will receive their diplomas. 2 Those students who have kept the faith and studied hard during their freshman il 4 year and their sophomore year, and so on up until their senior year, do not begrudge S 5 l their trials and hardships the least bit, as they now realize what an education is. ' lil , l When the class of '25 reached its junior year, as a whole it was determined to do ' ,l 1 ll , better in different activities, working to win honors, and have a better Yellow Jacket pl, than preceding classes. In most of these efforts, the senior class of '25 has accom- plished what it set out to do. ' r In the junior year, the girls of the domestic art department, who attended the iii clothing contest at Galveston, took honors. Some of the senior boys have received ' sweaters and little gold footballs for their good sportsmanship and clean playing in i 2 athletics. ' i fl l ' I a Then the years of '24 and '25 came, with this junior class, now advanced to seniors. I Q This class as a whole has prospered, publishing a paper of school life, supported by ll h the other classes of D. H. S. I' w 'I 1 l l I l 5 l fy '12-'iff' ' A t if-M-aw' aa. . A year in which the juniors have shown l 1, that they can fill the places of the seniors who are soon to leave dear old D. H. S. Of ,1 i t course we know that the seniors are hard to defeat, but a class leaving such a record 1' -' ' . . . I ,L as the juniorsintend to leave will indeed be hard to find. 'I I The juniors have proven themselves to be loyal supporters of all activities of the 4 school. For in Nothing But the Truth, juniors demonstrated their dramatic ability. i' ,lf The Jazz Orchestra, as would be expected, is composed almost entirely of juniors. ' 1 If I like In mental capacity the juniors rank among the firstg for when they were mere I. ll I' sophomores twelve members were enrolled in the Scholarship Club. ' .l B . . . . . . , N U, Have the juniors any pep? Never has enthusiasm run so high in a class as it does I 1 l , I Il in the class of '26, ', 1 I . N One marked characteristic of the class is its desire that each member should uphold il its honor and dignity at all times. It has been its policy to climb through the rugged ll I -' places, and when the task is completed they have the satisfaction of feeling that it 'was Q ' L 'Q well done. ,, Fl So as they approach the end of their high school career, they do so with boldness ' HN and yet with sadness. Those who will soon complete their last year are tinged deeply ' X14 with D. H. S. spirit and are ever ready to uphold the standard. l' :E ' . ,I VI 4 K ' eng!! Each class sent four representatives, two girls and two boys who were on the honor roll for the last semester of work, and the presidents of the different associations were included. There are five teachers in the Council, as follows: Mr. McDaniel, Mr. Norton, Miss Collins, Mrs. Mar- tin, and Miss L. Jenkins. The following officers were elected: Fred Badgett, presidentg Mildred Crumpton, vice-president, and Marie Ruck, secretary. The Council is as yet in its infancy, this being the first year that the Denison High School has had one, but it is doing remarkable and commendable work. So far the Council has not taken upon itself very much authority, but is looking' forth to a bright future as representative of the whole student body. The object of the Council is to promote closer co-operation between the pupils and teachers in the classrooms and outside, to bring together as a unit all the organizations of the school. It also endeavors to create school spirit and loyalty to the Denison High School, as set forth by both teachers and pupils, and to be a clearing house for student problems and activities. Faculty Advisor 'T lx 3 it Q' Denison High School, like some of the most successful colleges and high schools, if I has come to realize that pupils require a reward for their hard labor. Thus an organi- I zation was formed in the spring of 1924 which filled that requirement. This organiza- 1, 1 tion was the Scholarship Club. Its standard is that every member has an average grade lx 1 of 90 per cent and no grade below 80, and its aim is to increase scholarship standards 2 l , I among pupils of this school. The club in 1924 enrolled twenty-four members, all of 'K i whom won their membership by conscientious studying. The officers for that year lx were: Anzo Anderson, valedictorian of the 1924 class, president, Kenneth Williams, i Q vice-presidentg and Wesley Thompson, secretary and treasurer. i :N The membership for 1925 increased to twenty-nine, although thirteen members of I 1 1924 did not make the average for this year. Denison High School is proud of her ff sophomore class, as seventeen qualified for the organization. Ellen Crook is president, 5 Q, Mildred Crumpton is vice-president, and Virginia Suggs is secretary and treasurer. 3 A Meetings are held the first and third Wednesdays of each month. Z By the Scholarship Certificates which are issued each month, the organization of 'i 1926 will have a larger enrollment than any other club in the school, because about two l hundred girls and boys have qualified. Thus we consider the Scholarship Club a suc- 1 cess because it has urged pupils to make higher grades, and helps to urge them on to 5 3 higher scholastic endeavors. i 4 l si 3 , K Fifty-Seven 1 11 ' 1,-'H' ga. . ai.. As the brilliantly colored bow in the sky is prominent and admired, Denison Assembly No. 23 stands out in the girl life of this city. It stands for patriot- ism to the United States, because our nation has given to the peoples of the earth more hope than any otherg loyalty to our public schools, because they are the bases of our democracy, pure womanhood, because upon that rests the fulfillment of our nation's destinyg and, last but by no means least, love of church. The dreams of childhood of the pot of gold, of which a legend tells existed at the end of the rainbow, is found only by holding fast to these ideals. This beautiful symbolic fraternity meets in the Masonic Hall twice each month, supervised by Master Masons and Eastern Star members, The citizens of Denison have shown favorable consideration to the assembly and the girls wish to express their deep appreciation for the kindness shown. P. Brous Faculty Advisor Frank Ashburn The Denison High School Radio Club had a very profitable year, although there were fewer members than usual. With the dues of the club, which were 50 cents for three months, were bought three radio magazines- Radio News, Radio Digest, and Experimenter, to be used in the study of radio. One of the main studies this year was the International Morse code. Code practice was held after the regular meetings, a buzzer and a key, made by one of the boys, be- ing used. A small transmitter was finally constructed by the physics class, after consider- able delay, owing to their inability to get necessary constructional data. This set was used to test the members' receiving sets. Officers of the Radio Club served a three months' term instead of the usual six months, as before. During the past year, besides the regular programs at the 'Weekly meetings, the club had charge of the assembly program for one morning, when phono- graph music was presented and the members announced through the loudspeaker. Owing to the meeting of another club on the same day, the Science Club was able to meet only twice a month. For this reason, the Science Club andi Radio Club merged soon after the beginning of the second term and met on Thursdays. By this merger a larger club was organized, better able to carry out its program. To the faithfulness of Mr. Brous, the sponsor, and to the earnestness with which the boys entered into the work, belongs all of the club's success during the past year. Sixty , N A A xkf 711 Bs. Secretary Mrs. W. C. Green .. . Director For several years our high school has had a Glee Club, but until last year, when Mrs. W. C. Green took control, the musical talent, as a whole, had been sadly neglected. The Glee Club of this year was better than it was last year. A great many fine voices have come in from the freshman class this year and, together with the voices of last year, we have fifty-five good singers now at work. For the most part, the music that is sung by this club is three-part music- soprano, second soprano, and alto. As these various parts are equally strong and have equally good quality, they blend together splendidly. Each Thursday morning the Glee Club, with Mrs. Green, lead the entire school in song. The music is usually soul-stirring and enthusiastic, as only a fine student body under an able leader can make it. The only other active work by this body, up to this year, was the occasional sing- ing for the local Rotary Club or filling in between the acts of a play. However, this year they undertook a greater enterprise. They worked on the Chinese operetta, The Feast of the Little Lanterns, and expected to present it early in April. It was a genu- ine example of the Orient. Its stirring music, its lovely costumes and setting quickly won the hearts of the members and the hearts of the audience would likely have been as easily won, but due to the untimely death of Mrs. Green it was cancelled. .fx A Sixty-Two C ' , is . x :4-fi .gmt-lp 3. Over six hundred girls registered at the Stephen F. Austin Hotel and approximately one hundred and fifty high schools of Texas participated. The Denison High School was represented by six pupils, who were accompanied by Misses Harris and Tompkins of the Domestic Science Department. Each representative was a winner in a local cloth- ing contest. The winners were: Mary Murphy, Marie Middleton, Gladys Johnson, Louise Josslyn and Opal McCain. Each representative at the contest modeled the garment made by herself and was judged by three selected home economics educators. Opal McCain was awarded a prize on a romper suit and Marie Middleton received a prize on a lingeree dress. Mary Murphy received honorable mention on a linen Hofflin suit. As there was one entry only of Hofflin suits, no prize was legal. . In addition to the dresses that were modeled, a general clothing exhibit was featured at the clothing contest, in which Denison won fourth place, thereby receiving honorable mention. Austin was a very hospitable city and welcomed the contestants cordially. An interesting program was arranged, some features of which were: A scenic drive throughout the cityg a complimentary picture showg a picnic and lawn party on the University practice lawn, and a tea given by Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Sevier at their home on the Colorado River. Everyone enoyed the event exceedingly. Besides the enjoyable program, there was a very interesting environment in the way of university boys, who seemed espe- cially interested in the clothing contest also. Thus, it was with much reluctance that we each bid good-bye to Austin, anticipating another visit some day. -V KE. .5 Sixty-Four + g' gi ,-iwhillfg M 4, T' 3 '6 '-X.. ,y,,,,, at :A - L24 '-5f4'if.i??W M jigjif H '5 fEia 'f ml' '1f T f 'i'M c 3.62. The last camp was a great success. It was held on the Ardmore Boy Scout l camp grounds. Mental and moral training, as well as physical training, was given to I I the boys. 5 l Soon after school started the freshman boys were given a frolic, known as the QI Freshman Reception. This annual event was held in the Chamber of Commerce hall, i ll where there is plenty of room for the many amusing stunts. In Another event of importance was the trip of fifteen members to the Older Boys' I I Conference at A. and M. College, when Earl Dunn was elected a state officer. One of the Hi-Y's social affairs was a Hallowe'en party. This was held in the II local Y. M. C. A. building. Weekly supper meetings are also held. l l I ' I' During the Christmas holidays the Hi-Y Club entertained its alumni members 5,3 with a banquet. A goodly number of the alumni members attended this banquet and IQ , l' a good time was enjoyed by all present. Also in connection with the alumni banquet, I the birthday of the Hi-Y Club was observed. I l . . . . 5 'll On the night of February-12 the H1-Y Club, 'together with the Rotary and Lions 5 MI clubs, sponsored a Father and Son Banquet. It was conducted as though it was a train, li Mr. J. M. Crumpton being engineer or toastmaster. E III The club held an inter-city meet on April 20 with Sherman and Durant, in Denison. ' I l The club also presented to the school the Cup of Complete Manhood. IN A fl S I VH. :gtg Sixty- Five , I . 'fit s ,Q fr i 1- ' ,I . . The following officers were elected: Sallie Wiley, president: Lois Leeper, vice-presidentg Lora Adams, secretary-treasurer. The purpose of this organization is to assist in the training of declaimers and debaters. Books on public speaking have been studied throughout the year. Through this organization valuable declaimers, extemporaneous speakers and debaters have been discovered. This is one of the oldest organizations of the school. It was, in years gone by, the Pierian Literary Society, the name having been changed four years ago. Through- out the entire history Miss Carrie Johnson has been the sponsor, and during this time nine students have been entered in the State Interscholastic League meet, at Austin, in the various literary events. Interesting chapel programs have been furnished by the members throughout the year. The following students were chosen to represent the school in the County Inter- scholastic meet, held March 28: Declaimers: Lawrence Ashburn, Ellen Crook. Debaters: Raybourne Thompson, Burke Smith, Lora Adams, Sallie Wiley. These students. with the exception of the boys' debating team. represented the school in the District Interscholastic League meet in'Sherman, April 18. The boys' debating team was eliminated in the county meet. The question for debate, set forth by the Interscholastie League this year, is: Resolved, That the United States should grant the Philippine Islands their inde- pendence at the end of a period of five years. . , .y:5,t-sf: 'L I Sixty-Eight Q 5 I .gyfll K 'MAI I 5 ., .' - 2:35 jg I 1- 5 T QI?-':?j,zgQ5.I.'. ,1, I ' MESS' -f 1 M' iw! , . The aim and hope of I the club is now two-fold, besides heightening the interest of its members in good lit- erature, it hopes to lead those who are at present indifferent to the influence of good S reading, to learn to read the right kind of literature, not for pleasure alone, but for the good of their general knowledge and as an aid to their English courses. Q The members of the club have made a study of some of the modern poets,, such as Carl Sandburg, Edgar Lee Masters, and Vachel Lindsay, the modern prose writers that have been studied are: Zane Grey, Ruth Cross, Rex Beach, and James Oliver Curwood. Miss Mary M. Moore directs the study, which is lead by club members. The club has its own library, contributed largely by the members, in which col- lections of most of the works of the modern writers are to be found. Writing of original poems and essays by members is encouraged, and several poems have been contributed. The poems were quite interesting and were read as part of the regular programs. , The programs, consisting of readings, musical numbers, discussions on the lives of authors studied for that week, or any other appropriate subject, are given al- ternately by the different groups of the club. of which there are four. The play was of the medieval type. I V J I The judge, Raybourne Thompson, was sorely perplexed because he had married a woman, Lucille Wright, who, though beautiful, was dumb. He was greatly worried until a lawyer friend, William Nortrip, recommended a famous physician, who, he be- lieved, could cure the judge's wife. The judge, who was willing to try anything, called the famous doctor, who said that an operation must be performed. The operation is performed by Surgeon Man- gier fKenneth Williamsl, and proved to be successful. A The judge was quite overjoyed, but his joy did not last long, because his Wife seemed to use her voice too Well. The doctor Was called in again and pronounced his fTRE YELLOVJACKET or A P- wife's case to be Excess of Glottal Activity. He said that Cofosis was the only cure. Others of the cast who pleased the audience 'throughout the play were: LeRoy Anderson, as the druggistg Harry Wingren, Judge Botal's secretary, Elizabeth Ells- worth as Mlle. De la Garandiere, and Aubrey Lendcrman, a blind man. The success of the play was due to the able and careful supervision of Misses Collins and Sproule. WOODVILLE The first game of the season was a practice game scheduled with the Woodville All Stars. The Woodville crew began as if they would chalk up a heavy score against the home team, but after the first ten minutes of the first quarter, it was plainly seen that both the line and backfield were weak. The game ended with Woodville's team making only 6 points, while the home team made 27 points. DURANT NORMAL One week after the Woodville game, another practice game was played with the picked team of Durant Normal of Durant, Okla. This was a hard fought game, with the home team showing a vast improvement over their former performance. The game began as if it would be an easy victory for the Yellow Jackets. The Yellow Jackets held the visitors for a 7 to 0 score at the end of the first half. After the first half, the Durant mentor put in some of his first string men and they showed their power in using the forward pass, which netted all their gains in the last half. The game ended with the score 18 to 7, with the opposing team carrying away the long end of the score. The visitors' boasted aerial attack failed to net much, for Denison broke it up time after time. On the other hand, Denison com- , pleted several passes in the last half, Morgan and Moore being on the receiving end, I while Red Lenderman did the passing. ' I The Paris line held and Scott made 3 points by a pretty field goal. The rest of the first half was uneventful. Fumbling by both teams furnished several thrills in ' the last half. The score was 19 to 0. Very few tmes did the Lions come near scoring. The Yellow Jackets outplayed the home team in every point of the game, although outweighed by several pounds to the man. About sevnty-five rooters accompanied the team and created enthusiasm that rooted the Den-Hi eleven to victory. Considerable gratification was expressed by the fans at the outcome of the game, although the score does not nearly tell the story, for the Yellow Jackets played with several regulars out of the lineup. The Gold and Black held their opponents during the first quarter but in the sec- ond quarter the Bearcats were able to .score on fake plays and passes. In the first quarter it looked as if the Yellow Jackets had an even chance to win, because the Bearcats were not able to make gains through our line. Denison's hard luck began in the first quarter with Sherman kicking off to Deni- son. On a fumble, Denison was downed practically on their goal line and were forced to kick to Sherman. Sherman started a grand march' down the field toward the Yel- low Jackets' goal line, and as they neared the Denison goal line the Bearcats tried for a field goal, but on account of the high wind were not able to complete the kick. In the third quarter the Yellow Jackets started an aerial attack, which netted them several gains. As the Yellow Jackets neared the Bearcats' goal line, they were not able to furnish the punch to put the ball over. The Bearcats then opened a series of fake plays and surprised the Yellow Jackets. These fake plays netted another touchdown for Sherman and goal was kicked after touchdown. The quarter ended with the score 14 to O. The fourth quarter opened with a battle in mid -field. Sherman, after exchanging punts with Denison, was able to get possession of the ball. Again the Bearcats be- wildered the Yellow Jackets on fake plays and added another 7 points. The game ended with the ball in Sherman's possession. Eighty-Eight 1 gi W. .9 .. J' - 7 ... - - X ' il- X XL -:---f-- ---N , l . ., . . All hopes were abandoned of com- f peting in the Interscholastic League. Coach W. B. Graham then formed a team of gg ,, - high school boys, or former high school boys, to play in the City League. TV , , '1 The City League was made up of six teams: the Signal Corps, the American Le- . gion, the High School, the Knights of Columbus, the Katy Shops, and the Wesley Five. T-Y Much interest was shown by the citizens and the High School team had a good follow- 53 ing, both from the students and other people not connected with the school. I ill A Each team played a game with each of the other five teams. These games were X5 ' played on Tuesday and Friday nights, at which the attendance was excellent. l T 2 The High School team was beaten only once and that time by the Wesley Five, M which had a very strong team. High School came out on top and won the city cham- q pionship. At the end of the required number of games, and at the request of one of E the teams they had beaten, they played another game with them and won it also. 1 , Two of the players of the High School team who did not attend school at that :fy ' time, but had previously, were John Clark and Randolph Caldwell. Only a dream it was, you see, But it seemed so real and so true That I saw each member of '25 And the work he was trying to do. So listen, friends, Fm going to tell, Tho' at telling I'm not worth a darng But I'll tell you what I dreamed that night In a kind of rhyming yarn. Tl191'8,S Lora Adams, a darling old maidg She couldn't decide on a mate. She says she will marry some time in her life, E'en tho' some twenty years late. And LeRoy Anderson is writing now For the Pottsboro Daily News. He gives his opinions, that sound like the law, When he Writes up his timely views. Dovie Mae Arnold is teaching schoolg She's teaching away from her home. She has a hard time with mischievous chaps, In pounding some sense into their domes. And Louise Baker now lives in Madridg She married the minister to Spain. In society and balls she's a popular queen, With no worries to bother her brain. Miss Sadie Ball is a steno, I sawg She works for a good looking lawyer. His wife thinks he talks to her more than he ought, And insists that he must fire her. Charlie Bruno is a cow-punching' sheik, So riding a horse is his hobbyg But he's interested now in a cow-girl town And is thinking of wedding bells, probably. Society queen is Faulabelle Christian, Attractive and wise as can be. She's been engaged a number of times, But just for some fun, you see. Elizabeth Compton, a pianist of fame, The piano she plays with delight. Her touch is of vigor and vim when she plays, That the neighbors are kept up at night. Mildred Cox is married like most, Tho' she's quiet and all unconcerned. But she rules her household with a strong arm, For she's exceedingly drastic and stern. Ellen Crook runs an automobile, Or rather you'd call it a flivverg But the way she drives it all over town, Makes the people of Denison shiver. Sheik Arvil Dowdy has a very bruised head, Received from his wife on the run, When she bounced on his bean her new rolling For slipping in home after one. Claud Easterly is a statesman in Congress, He speaks in the Senate each day. He loves to orate to the house when it meets, It's hard to get him away. Elizabeth Ellsworth is a flapper yet, Her love affairs, sad to relate. She dresses almost like a girl of sixteen, And her complexion? Oh, well, it's a fake. Gussie Fisher is in Baltimore, She holds a government position. She makes lots of money and has lots of fung Still she's always dreaming and wishin'. Thelma James is a preacher's wife, So strange and yet so trueg She married the sky-pilot alone for his love, I guess 'twas the best thing to do. Carl Jennings has long been on the stage. He has such a marvelous voice His audiences leave when he comes f orth to sing, But it's only for eggs, of course. Lee Kennedy now is a married man, His sheiking days are past. Whenever he wants to go out at night He must go to his wifey and ask. is P' pin, ..,.-...-s ,.......1.... l p l' ' - , .-' I. .I , - Af- --.v-K . ' liffmu.
