Our modern Navy is a highly mobile, flexible instrument of foreign policy. It helps promote peace and stability throughout the free world, and is always 'ready to defend our country or those of our allies against aggression. Typical of these forces are the units which make up the U.S. Sixth Fleet. The Sixth Fleet consists of 50 to 60 ships including Carrier Task Groups, striking forces, and amphibious forces deployed to the Mediterranean Sea. It is mobile and flexible enough to wage limited or full-scale conventional or nuclear war anywhere in southern Europe, the middle East, or North Vital to the co of this mighty fleet are the services the Servi Fleet. Like the other units of Force is made up of Atlantic e p lo y e d to the Mediterranean , stores ships, tenders and and r services. The Sixth Fleet daily consumes some 24,000 pounds of meat, 19,000 pounds of potatoes, 100,000 cups of coffee, and 17,000 loaves of bread. Most of this food is brought to the Sixth Fleet by the Reefers, the refrigerated provisions stores ships. DENEBOLA is one of six of these in the Atlantic Fleet. She deploys to the Mediterranean for periods of about two months each Qas well as making other shorter deployments in support of our forces in the Caribbean areal. DENEBOLA carries her cargo in four holds, any or all of which may be refrigerated to --20F,. Usually, most of one hold is refrigerated to about'09 F for frozen cargo such as frozen beef. Most of another hold is refrigerated to about 35OF for chill cargo Qlettuce, oranges, applesy, and the other two holds are unre- frigerated, for dry provisions Qflour, sugar, cocoa, canned goodsy and for stores fbrooms, swabs, coffee cups, papernapkinsl . In all, DENEBOLA carries about 3,800 tons of cargo, consisting of over 420 different items. It is loaded in a manner that permits access to almost any item at any time, and six vertical tray lift conveyors are installed to bring the cargo up from the holds.
