Launched on June 10, 1944, she was named the S.S. HIBBING VICTORY and served in the merchant fleet in both the Atlantic and Pacific. Part of the raised metal letters that spell HIBB1NG VICTORY may still be seen on her stern. In 1952 she was acquired by the U.S. Navy to be converted to a refrigerated provisions stores ship. On January. 20, 1954, she was commissioned USS DENEBOLA. The ship is named for a star, as are other ships of her type. DENEBOLA is a second magnitude star in the constellation of Leo the Lion. ln fact, the name DENEBOLA comes from the Arabic for Tail of the Lion. DENEBOLA is 455' 3 long and has a beam of 62'.
