CLUBS The Hikers Club, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Bowyer and Mrs. Demming, start- ed the fall season with a tobboganing party at River Rouge and a skating party at Palmer Park, in addition to their weekly Sunday hikes. The president this term was Ruth Scalan. The Camera Club, under the auspices of Miss Stein, has enabled students interested in photography to further their knowledge of the tech- niques involved in the art of picture taking. The photo- graphy used to advertise the Funfest was under their management. Organized by Mrs. Marion Van Osenbruggen the purpose of the French Club is to give French students added interest and instructions. Besides their actual work in French the fifteen members, boys and girls, have been knitting for the Red Cross. President this year was Melvin Malow. The Pan American League was organized by Miss Grace Weston to promote the creation of better relationships with latin Amerie an countries. Members carry on correspondence with League members in South America. Meetings are characterized by speakers outstanding in this field. The Biology Club under the auspices of Dr. Povah is one of Denby's newest and fastest growing organizations. Activities for the past semester include a dance given to raise funds to purchase plants for the lunchroom. Dr. Povah, in organizing this club, hoped to give students of Denby a chance to further their interests in Biology. Chief activities of t h e Chess Club, organized by Mr. Gordon, of the Social Sci- ence department, have been numerous intra-club tourna- ments, the purpose of which was to build a stronger, more capable team. When the team has been sufficiently trained, Mr. Gordon plans to enter them in contests with other high schools. The Denby addition and numerous other improvements in this community were brought about with considerable aid from the Northeast Community Council. This group of business people has greatly increased its membership since its founding two years ago. Today under the able leadership of Mr. Henry Fett, president of a year's standing, they are continuing their splendid work.
