We couldn't get Joe Wiethoff, Johnny Loftus, and Loren Ward while in school so we asked for them as our escorts at the Bureau, for the New Year's Eve which we are going to spend at the palatial residence of Mr. and Mrs. Merwin Read. She is the former Harriette Bott, of the Bashful Botts. How well we remember that wedding. Mary Marchione warbled Oh Promise Me and the bridesmaids included Bernice Zila, Adeline Van Heeke, Ada Wagner, Rose Schon, Katherine Springer, and LaReva Salwin. We letf Ma Talerowski's Boarding House, the Ham and Egg Emporium where we roomed next to those gay divorcees Charlotte Tanner and Helen Steffy, only to step into a You Ride 'Em, We Drive 'Em cab driven by Charlie Young who, in connection with Herman Peters and Perry Whalley owns this up an' comin' service for the public. Charlie suggested that a run of the town would be more interesting than a boring society party and also suggested Clarke Dettmer, Bob Erwin and Bill Martin, those famous Town Painters as our personal guides. Of course, we were thrilled at the prospect even though WIETOFF, LOFTUS, and WARD weren't available. Mr. Dettmer suggested as our first step Dotties' Dive owned by Bill Kuehn and the Mrs., the former Dorothy Weiland. The Dive was conveniently situated near LaLonde's Last Lap, the funeral parlor. Upon entering we were greeted by the cute little hat-check girl. Norma Hight, and directed to a choice table be head waiter, Bob Casey, just as the program started. The featured stars of the evening were the Moonshiners chorus which con- sisted of June Haskell, Lorraine Kulick, Lil Kamberg, Gladys Hackett, Maxine Gilmore, and so on. Also on the program was that famous comedy team of Oswald Zeidler and Phyllis Andrews, who astonished us all by being funny. Just as we started to wend our way to the door we spied Vic Westman, William Wills, and Oliver Vetere, the house dicks, who were looking earnestly for LOFTUS, WIETOFF, and WARD at our request. We got to the door in time to see Allan Huffmon being hurriedly exited by Skippy LaChapelle, the bouncer. As we were nonchalanty riding along our attention was drawn to a sign reading The Flnorwalker's Frolic with music by Kenny Blum and his Flatfooters . Driving by we noticed Casanova Albright as doorman who waved to us, indicating either to go on by or come in. We weren't sure, so we went in. The Schlotter Swing was in progress. It was created by Dorothy and Bob, those famous artists of the dance. Those swinging it were Delphine Acker, Doris Bender, Lorraine Daniel, Rose Mary DeCuypere, William Ander- son, Bob Ashcraft, Berthold Boehm, and Lloyd Boswell. Master of ceremonies was Bill Cullinan, who was ably assisted by his charming stooge Joyce Tyler. Incidentally, the stooge from the audience was Moffat Brown, who we all know dashed off with Dachoff. Suddenly all the doors flew open and there appeared upon the scene officers Skinner, Santoro, Stilson, Su-panich, and Wagner. That's right. it was a raid. The judge was the Honorable Homer V. Gerts. We flapped our eyelashes, some flew off and struck the Honorable Homer V. Gerts in the eye, allowing us just enough time to elude the clutches of the law, and the judge. Feeling the need for fresh air we decided to stretch our limbs and go for a walk. While walking down Woodward we spied an advertisement announcing the coming lecture by Miss Christian Daphne Deeley-Jones and her attractive assistant, Florence Lucille Nyquist. Their topic was Spreading Culture Among the Masses. Upon hearing our names called, we turned and saw Norma Marti- nelli, Shirley Lane, Winnie Papenfus, Ida Ponzio, George Winters, Art Wilson, Don Taitt, and Jerry LaRouche, who were on their way to Florence Underwood's new drama Rain on the Roof, drip, drip. No reflection on the cast, however, which included John LaVassar, character role was played by Ruthie Mierow whose famous last words haven't arrived yet. The play will probably be reviewed by Shirley Shimmin Van Gorder. that talented cynic- critic. Here comes the Navy down the street. First comes Harry Mertens with Barbara Van Giesen's name tattooed on his chest, and Charles Yale, first Lieutenant with Clara Funk devotedly hanging from one arm. Behind them came Bill Wheeler, galley slave, and Wes Hopp, and Frank Gregg. They gave us the once over, just once, and passed on. As we were sauntering along once more Meyer's Fancy Fresh Fruit Stand caught our eye. It was presided over by the super duper wit, Irving Meyers. The specialty for the day had been straight bananas. Matching pennies in the back room were Don Vincent, George Villneff, and Howard Vautherot. Our conscienceis got the best of us and we felt it our social duty to at least stop in at the Reads' party. We were glad we did because among the couples present were Georgina Balduck and James Utley, Phyllis Barnard and Vincent Sweier, Pearl Bintz and William Tagoline, Dorothy Dunn and Russell Preston, Eileen Connelly and Paul Senstock, Dorothy Borland and Marcel Wer- brouck, Geraldine DeLaura and Earl Kloock, and Elizabeth Binder and Bill Smith. With a loud fanfare the orchestra announced the arrival of Sir Francis Anthony, Mechaux, ambassador to Goon 0'Bania, accompanied by his board of advisors, Margaret Scatter- brain Kelley, Doris Kruger, Alice Kyle, and Lenita LaBar. Im- mediately following were Richard Greene Reed, Eugene Gene Ray- mond, and James Cagney Odell, those famous heart throbs of the screen. Bringing up the rear were Susy Jarrett, Katherine Remsing. Betty Massad, and Geraldine McDonald, this season's most popular debs. Entertainment for the first part of the evening included tiddle- winks, drop the hankerchief, and post office. However, the main entertainment was the circus in the ballroom which featured such aerial artists as Letty Bauer, Bette Baxendale, Edna Graf, and Joyce Fraser. While below Don Frede industriously sold peanuts as the guests watched lion tamer, Art Habermas, and his assistant Mary Carlton, and bareback riders Mary Ann Bena, Mabel Beamish, and Virginia Ames. We wanted to welcome the New Year's in the center of things so we once more headed for town only to meet Ruth Inman, Marceline Goetsch, Shirley Bidigare and Vivian Ackroyd, ac- companied by Hugh Ferdy Asselin, Tony Bonfiglio, Al Borders, and Bert Bourne, who were heading for George Goetz's Greasy Fork just down the street. Thinking we might run into WIETHOFF, LOFTUS, and WARD we decided to run along with them. We found instead Virginia Bradford eating a hamburger with Heinz Reichardt, Jayne McClanahan, Virginia Cischke, and Elizabeth Columbo sharing a rootbeer, Ruth Emery and Marion Beyer wait- ing for their hubbies to finish work, but they didn't know the five o'clock whistle didn't blow. Waitresses Maggie Booth and Ginny Cremers rushed up to us with the bill and we rushed out. At this stage of the night every New Year's eve, most lamp- posts are occupied but suddenly we discovered Allan Huffmon who had recently be bounced, making his way unsteadily toward one, aided by Helen Gipperich, who in turn had to be aided by Helen Grasli. Mary Haerens looked rather disappointed in her hubby of the future, Russell Milne, because his roving eye seemed 'to be getting the best of him, especially when Gloria Sherred and Gloria Sims strolled by. Joyce Hepburn, Agatha Jones, and Jean Hol- stein, were seen making their way through the crowd on the arms of Fred Britton, Alex Bryce, and Wayne Campbell. Behind them were Bernice Karol and Hawley Cath, Leona Lang with Joe Cavanaugh, and Betty Jean Lenz with Harry Downey, Helen Liebelt and Harry Edelmann, who were on their way to ARJAY'S to attempt to recapture fond memories of high school days. AR- JAY'S is under the new management of Lillian Loncarevic and Isabel MacPhee and presents Shirley Whitson and her chorus, Cecilia Matczak, Jennie Mauch, Betty Mehlenbacher, Betty Meyerl, nightly. The waiters, although not as handsome as WIETHOFF, LOFTUS, and WARD, intrigued us immensely. They were Bob Welch, Sam Snodgrass, Marvin Reske, Milton Paner, and they suggested that we trapise down to the Y to see Jack Martyn and his Hepcatters's , beat it out eight to the bar. We only peeked in the window but we saw Mignon Morgan with Phil Farney, Betty Nemens with Charles Gast, Dolores Nai- man escorted by Edwin Gies, Alberta Nickens and Willie Glander. From there we went to the Allied Youth Ball where the Gonczar Gallop was in progress. The dancers here included Harold Humbert and Helen Norris, and Grayce Petrofka with Norbert Knapp, Elizabeth Purcell with Bob Krausman, and Maggie Pye with Dick LaBuhn. We had heard earlier in the evening that Ervin Marz and James McDougall were to be featured in a wrestling match. Winnie Radford, Betty Reidle, Mary Royal, Fanny Russo, Mary Jane Sanwald, and Mary Louise Schehr, were ardently watching from the stands. .Our next stop was the Automat where the proprietor Albert Meeseman greets everyone with his theme song, Don't Sling a Slug in the Slot. Even the Automat didn't produce WIETHOFF, LOFTUS, and WARD, but it did produce Al Mumford, Charles Moore, Tom Navarro and Bob Nelson who had been arguing the whole evening long about who broke the lock on the henhouse door and came to the conclusion while we were there that it must have been Dorothy because everytime they looked at her she Schrank. Oh hum. Dorothy Schurr and Jean Schweitzer were eating chocolate pie with Earlene Whitney, one piece after the other, and Lucy Slack having finished hers, was playing hockey by herself to keep her girlish figure. We were having such a marvelous time that we had nearly forgotten about WIETHOFF, LOFTUS, and WARD, but at that moment Dot. St. Peter dashed in and who should she have with her but Harry Mertens and John Peter and Celia Swanz, who told us that they had seen WIETHOFF, LOFTUS, and WARD just down the street. As it was rapidly nearing midnight, and we did want to see the New Year in with OUR MEN, we scurried along the sidewlks in search of them. This time Ethel Teschendorf was helping Allan Huffmon along to another lamp post and she had June Warnke and Marge Watson on her arm who were just look- ing on. Ethel Unruh and Eleanor Van Goethem, those dancing dolls of the follies gave their assistance since it was Allan Huffmon who was the cause of it all. Liz Weil and Norinne White and Doris Windsor went to Canada this evening but, as they said, there was nothing in Wind- sor to compare with WIETHOFF, LOFTUS, and WARD, so they came back to help us in the search. Virginia Wurfel thinks we're silly because we won't be happy with Art Wilson and June Wurn insists that they are already spoken for, she should know, but where there's life there's hope- and WIETHOFF, LOFTUS, and WARD certainly have life so . . . Hearing strains of music from afar we cocked our ears and strained our eyes and saw those merry song and dance men Hal Peterson, Ed Porrett, and Bob Prochazka, and Ferdy Reick who had come to tell us that at last . . . At last . . . Just at midnight . . . WIETHOFF, LOFTUS, and WARD had been found and were waiting eagerly for us around the corner. S0000 . . . as chimes rang and bells pealed and horns tooted, we three spent a glorious New Year's eve. Allan Huffman has decided to put in his application early for next year's father time. And now we close with- To WIETHOFF, LOFTUS, and WARD: We saw 'em We got 'm And Oh, Boy! - The Denby Forum has conducted its assemblies in the manner of the town meeting radio pro- grams. A guest speaker, either teacher or student, was invited each week to express his views on foreign and do- mestic affairs, after which the discussion was thrown open to the floor. Member- ship has been large but new students are always welcomed. Founded in Febru- ary, 1939, the Junior Dramatic Work- shop has continued to be one of the most interesting clubs in Denby. The p u r p o s e, according to sponsor Miss Dorothea Comfort, is to give dramatic instruction and experience to lower classman. The Funfest production of Mid-Summer Night's D r e a m and short radio programs have constituted the terms' activities. With Mrs. Marga- riete Shimmin as their sponsor and director, the Drama and Radio Club soared to new heights this year. Audi- torium activities, including plays pre- sented at the Funfest, assemblies, and programs given over the public address system, were under their auspices. The club showed a profitable year in spite of the absence of a senior play. The purpose of the Denby Mother's Club, as in the past, has been to work for the betterment of Denby and the surrounding commun- ity. Under their auspices bi-weekly dances have been held in order to raise funds for the annual scholarship given to an outstanding senior. Other activ- ities include a Christmas bazaar. The Art Club was organized by Mr. Anthony to give stu- dents a better chance to study and understand both ancient and modern art. The twenty-four members have been making trips to art exhibits and galleries. In time the club hopes to establish an art scholarship fund for a deserving senior. An organization composed of outstanding musicians is Denby's Music Club, sponsored by Miss Hulda Martin. A dance and Christmas concert were a few of the activities given under their auspices. During the course of the term the Denby Debating Team has participated in six official debates. They are the first team to bring a plaque to Denby. Speakers this term were Rose Hufnagel, Maureen Kaess, and Martin Shapero. This term a semi- monthly edition of the Denby Log has been presented to the student body. After the re-organization of the staff under the sponsorship of Mr. Wiesen- feld, much work was done to furnish the students with a different and true school paper. The present paper, similar to a daily newspaper in form, has been the result and has met with great suc- cess and approval. The Service Club was organized under the direction of Mr. Phillip Baird for the purpose of building character among the student body. Being the school's largest club it boasts a membership close to two hun- dred. Members control the halls and lunchroom during the school day and at the end of each term receive medals for length of service. s Rf! 5 V' ' 10 ' f L, ... ' f, -iff. Recently the Hi-Y enter- tained the student body with an even- ing of movies and a semi-formal New Year's eve dance. Its members have cir- culated among the student body of Denby and have helped further the Hi- Y cause, To create, maintain, and ex- tend throughout the school and com- munity high standards of christian char- acter. Outstanding for its large amount of activity is the Denby's Dance Club sponsored by Mr. Arthur Carty. Demonstrations during the past semester have been given at several schools, including Southeastern and Northeastern. Several members re- ceived recognition after their partici- pation in the Night Club Varieties fea- tured in the recent Funfest. Conspicuous in its position in front of the office is the Advertising Club, whose tireless efforts produce the gay and informative post- ers that line Denby's halls as advertis- ment for school activities. Sponsored by Mrs. Marian Van Osenbruggen, the Ad club offers a fine opportunity for those interested in commercial artistry. pf ,fawidif The Gamma Rh o chapter of the Girl Reserves sponsored as their main activity of the term, a skating party held at the Y.M.C.A. For- mal and informal initiations were held. President for the past term has been Shirley Anderson. Under the able and enthusiastic sponsorship of Miss Helen Kelly, the Senior Girl Reserves have had a full season of activities. Included are a skating party given in collabora- tion with the Hi-Y, a formal and an informal initiation, and the annual Christmas party given for needy child- ren. President for the past semester has been Harriett Bott. The Denby branch of the Michigan Affiliated F u t u r e Craftsmen Clubs is sponsored by Mr. Drapeau. During the last few years members of the Denby branch have carried several prizes at state conven- tions. A large share of the credit for this success should be given to Don Carter, president of the club and state secretary of the affiliated clubs. To promote a bet- ter interest in science and more socia- bility among studentsi' is the purpose of the Science Club, organized by Dr. Vaughn. The thirty members recently took a visit to the Cranbrook Institute of science. Scientific experiments con- stitute further activities. The successful mo- ney making enterprises carried on by the Home Economics Club this year have consisted of selling potato chips and peanuts at football games, super- vising a bake sale, and sponsoring the sale of fruit cakes, which amounted to 375 pounds. Members of the club were hostesses for a city wide Home Eco- nomics Club's Christmas Party, Decem- ber 17. The Denby S al e s Club is in charge of sales for all school activities and functions. For the most part the sales are carried on through representatives appointed for each re- cord. Good salesmanship is stressed for membership. CLUBS The Hikers Club, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Bowyer and Mrs. Demming, start- ed the fall season with a tobboganing party at River Rouge and a skating party at Palmer Park, in addition to their weekly Sunday hikes. The president this term was Ruth Scalan. The Camera Club, under the auspices of Miss Stein, has enabled students interested in photography to further their knowledge of the tech- niques involved in the art of picture taking. The photo- graphy used to advertise the Funfest was under their management. Organized by Mrs. Marion Van Osenbruggen the purpose of the French Club is to give French students added interest and instructions. Besides their actual work in French the fifteen members, boys and girls, have been knitting for the Red Cross. President this year was Melvin Malow. The Pan American League was organized by Miss Grace Weston to promote the creation of better relationships with latin Amerie an countries. Members carry on correspondence with League members in South America. Meetings are characterized by speakers outstanding in this field. The Biology Club under the auspices of Dr. Povah is one of Denby's newest and fastest growing organizations. Activities for the past semester include a dance given to raise funds to purchase plants for the lunchroom. Dr. Povah, in organizing this club, hoped to give students of Denby a chance to further their interests in Biology. Chief activities of t h e Chess Club, organized by Mr. Gordon, of the Social Sci- ence department, have been numerous intra-club tourna- ments, the purpose of which was to build a stronger, more capable team. When the team has been sufficiently trained, Mr. Gordon plans to enter them in contests with other high schools. The Denby addition and numerous other improvements in this community were brought about with considerable aid from the Northeast Community Council. This group of business people has greatly increased its membership since its founding two years ago. Today under the able leadership of Mr. Henry Fett, president of a year's standing, they are continuing their splendid work.
