Newspaper Staff Exploratory Teachers Our high school introduced the new state approved exploratory teachers program this year. This program is considered one of the most effective experiences for attracting students to teaching. While observing and assisting a master teacher the student gains a better understand- ing of the role of the teacher and of his aptitudes for teaching. High school seniors with aver- age or above scholastic records, and with definite plans for college may enroll in this program. It is a two semester, full credit, course. The exploratory teachers change areas and levels at mid-term. Left to Right: Row I: Carol Tesky, Bev Moolenaar. Row II: Mary Christopher, Karen Wallin, Pat Thomas, Sue Bozell, Diane Raguse. Developmental, which is the systematic instruction designed to increase the childs ability as a reader. 2. Recreatory, which is concerned with the voluntary reading the child does for his own pleasure. 3. Functional, which involves those reading activities that are the natural accompaniment of daily classroom activities. III One of the Purposes of the School Is: To help the child become an effective, well adjusted, contributing member of a democratic society. A stimulating program in reading is necessary if this goal is to be achieved. Thought- ful reading is a means of gaining social and civic understanding, he not only finds enjoyment but is able to use this tool in furthering knowledge in reading skills in ways that are significant to them. 47 Grade Two Row I. SECOND GRADE OBJECTIVES The second grader should become an independent reader. To do this he must learn to analyze words, to pronounce them correctly and to check the accuracy of his analysis through the use of the word meaning and context. He must learn to use the phonetic principles which he has been taught in the first and second grades. He must learn that getting meanings from the printed symbols is as important as pronouncing words. It is important that he learns to tell what he reads in the proper sequence. In numbers, he must continue to count by two’s, learn the one hundred addition facts, also the subtrac- tion facts. He should learn to say the facts quickly without the use of “crutches” of any kind. 48 Grade Two Row I. Evic Swisher, Kent McDaniel, Robert Quillen, Ronda VanSwol, Melvin Lock, Cindy Schlarp, Ronnie Neeley, Daren Young, Shelley Zea. „ „ , „ „ . T „„ „ , Row II. Learning to tell time should be mastered in this grade, it has been introduced in the first. Knowing the value of each coin is important. Learning liquid measure is necessary. He must also learn to work written problems that take some reasoning on his part. During his study of Language he should learn the days of the week, the months, and the holidays. He should learn the different kinds of sentences, how to write sentences, write original stories, friendly letters and invitations. It is very important for him to become a good listener. He should choose good books to read. Other instruction includes cursive writing, spelling, science, and health. Music and art are also taught. If he does all that has been mentioned and learns to work and play harmoniously with all the other students, he will become a good third grader the next year. 49 Grade Three Row I. We learn to add three numbers, to carry, and to borrow. We use the Law of grouping and Expanded Notation. The Multiplication tables through the fives and division through the fives are learned. Sets, subsets, and three place values are a part of the learning pattern. The study of Health is a continious story including the senses, healthful eating, cleanliness, proper clothing, safety, and the body itself. Reading and phonics are correlated although separate texts are used. We have a reading vo- cabulary of about 500 new words. We also learn to use the dictionary in the back of our read- ers. Phonics rules learned in the first and second grades are reviewed. The Third Grade is the last year of the phonics series. 50 Grade Three Row I. FIFTH GRADE OBJECTIVES Our term this year in Reading has been an imaginary trip all over the world. We have studied all the parts of speech, writing all types of letters, preparing oral and written reports and enjoying reading for pleasure. The class enjoyed a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. The students enjoyed seeing how the other people live and breathe. In Social Studies we had an imaginary trip all over the 50 States and actually each wrote a letter to the Governor of each state, asking for all the information upon each state. 54 Grade Five Row I. SIXTH GRADE OBJECTIVES The Language Arts program continues with the progress of basic skills that have been presented in the grades preceding the sixth grade, both in the oral and written work. Reading advances pupils’ previous knowledge of vocabulary and fluency in both silent and oral reading. Pupils must continue to comprehend and understand the reading materials. We work toward reading achievement to that level which is considered appropriate to the ability of the child. Dictionary and encyclopedia work is stressed. Libraries should be used to fullest extent. Language should be a well-balanced program for both oral and written activities. The basic structural composition of good sentences is emphasized. Our newer methods use the linguistic approach. This has to do with patterns of structure which also helps in the teaching of the parts of speech. Creative writing is an important phase of the language program. Spelling is an advanced continuation of skills in learning to spell and use words correctly. The workbooks include many exercises to improve in all areas of spelling. Improvement in handwriting is a constant aim. Legibility, along with ease in writing is stressed. 56 Grade Six Row 1. Donna Long, Robert Boms, Sandra Fase, Jeff Grevenstuk, Cheryl Beckefeld, Cindra Gross, Annette Koselke, Dan Lewis, Julie Barker. Row II. Arithmetic extends the basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Some work is done in other bases, mathematical sentences (working for the unknown), and brief work in beginning geometry. Per cent work is introduc- ed. Pupils need to develop ability in computation with numbers in practical situations. The ability to interpret and solve all types of story problems is important. Social Studies is a fused course. It is a study of OLD WORLD LANDS (EASTERN HEMISPHERE). The history covers rather generally the beginning of life since the caveman to the modern times of the twentieth century. A spirit of appreciation for history is an impor- tant aspect of teaching in the area. Current events (generally a daily discussion and a weekly special with our “YOUNG CITIZEN” Newspaper) adds greatly to the history part of our Social Studies. The geography helps pupils to un derstand how man lives in different environ- ments throughout the world. This helps to show how the advantages and disadvantages of different areas of human occupation and use, are related to such natural forces as landforms, climate, and resources. The more specific studies will be encountered in later education. Music and art help to develop appreciation and enjoyment for the finer and more cultural aspects of human growth and development. In all areas of school work at this level, we are striving for social adjustment and behavior appropriate to his age group, as well as the academic achievement. Uh. . . and uh. . . yea. . da. . . This was to be done because the Secretary of the Population Explo- sion, Pat Jacobsma, had reported that the DeMotte area was extremely over- crowded. The “Moon Express,” piloted by Bob Bormann and co-piloted by Ron Bormann, was to transport the people to “Moon Valley.” At the first town council meeting on the moon, Keith Hamstra was elected mayor, and his loyal supporters, Janet Odle and Chris DeVries were appoint- ed his ever-helping secretaries. Larry Gibson and Danny Hayes were appoint- ed town marshals because of their swiftness at the “draw.” The council con- tracted Mike Holmes as sanitary engineer to transport his “Little Red Wag- on” to the moon. Jan Mosier and Phyllis Woudema were employed as gar- bage collectors. Donna Barker, Cheryl Terborg, and Charlene Moolenaar were employed as meter maids because of their ability to see red. Ron Kam- minga was appointed as the local street cleaner, due to previous experience. Nance Stellingwerf was elected the first Justice of the Peace of Moon Valley, although she had no previous experience. The editor and publisher of the Moon V alley Post is Roy Hough who is always on top of the news. The sports editor is athletic Dave Cron. Sheryl DeBoer unveils the new moon, mod fashions in her column each week. Doug Hamstra reports the weather from his elevated position. Shiela Eeningen- burg and Karen Roorda head the gossip column with juicy bits of news. Margaret Kampenga, the food ideas editor, shows us how to make tasty dish- es from moon fruits and vegetables. Since Steve Spraggs is a better bicycle-peddler than an automobile driver, the Western Union has employed him to pedal Mary Christopher around the moon community to issue her singing telegrams. Dennis DeYoung, the local banker, keeps our “moon-ey” safe and sound. The local beauty shop, frequented by Sue Bozell, Ardy Rients, and Dianne Raguse, is efficiently operated by Bob Swanson. The grocery store, run by Alan Conrad, had its problems trying to keep the shelves stocked. The bookworm, Connie Hoffman, became the librarian because of her ability to say “sh-h-h-h.” 96 The great team, Phil and Pat (Thomas) Crane who had studied at Mayo Brothers, opened the local medical clinic. Moon Valley’s ham and egg factory was owned and operated by Edna Bel- stra. On the comer of 1st and Main stands Stan Musch’s gas, Dave Caldwell’s clean-up, and Jim Wahl’s wax service station. Beverly Moolenaar and Debi DeYoung deliver flowers to Moon Valley Funeral Home, operated by Jim Hart. Trish Starkey and Karen Wallin are the Pizza Queens at Dan Anderson’s Dutch pizza palace. Betty VanSchepen and Eric Boon are seen daily carving wooden shoes at the local wooden shoe factory. The “Moon Shine” is run by prohibitionists Marvene Barker and Dave Sytsma. Carol Tesky finds her delight in painting pictures of stakes. At Moon Valley High School, Nancy Gilbert teaches Spanish in perfection. Donna Nees and Linda Leach are the expert instructors of the new course “Government-Made-Simple.” Mike Orsbum is the Driver’s Education in- structor, and he manages to teach some of the best means of “get-a-way.” One of the less important men in the work of the school is Tom Sullivan, who is head of the Busdrivers Anonomous Association. Dan Mitchell is the drum MAJOR in St. JILL’S Marching Band. Dave Dykhuizen soon acquired a reputation as being the town bum in De- Motte. Mike Kenning is the Secret Service Agent Number 1969 who operates in the DeMotte area. DeMotte’s “American” cheese mine is run by the truly patriotic original Apollo 8 astronauts: Michele Gross, Jan Nuss, and Noralene Sanders. Dave Takacs, leader of an expeditionary force to the dark side of the moon, has not been heard from since the moving and relocation of DeMotte. Two members of the class of 1969 were left back on earth. Ellen Wilkie was in the WAC’s still trying to keep up with Danny, and Linda Thomas has prospective ideas of becoming a “King.” 97 tiff, — f v 4 i — — J. n sm Senior Superlatives r MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Karen Wallin and Stan Musch will surely succeed in THIS class!
