The boys had to go both ways and this tired them greatly toward the end of the game. Looking over the scores, though, one can readily see that in five of the losses the score was extremely close, around one touchdown difference and these could have been turned around with a break in DeMotte ' s favor. What must be said is that this is by far the roughest schedule DeMotte has had as it is the schedule to be followed when consolidation comes. Most of the opponents had the advantage of a larger student body. Our special award winners this year were: Most Desire Duke Thornton. Best Mental Attitude John Bierma Best Defensive Back Enno Rose Best Defensive Lineman A1 Conrad All four of these boys were named All Midwest Conference. Duke and Enno were the co-captains for the Indians. Junior High ' A ’ Team Row I: Fred Nagel, Joe Roorda. The once prosperous city of DeMotte had be en greatly damaged by tremendous showers of rain which eventually turned into a flood. The mayor of DeMotte, Duke Thornton, gave a speech of encouragement to the people of his city and also expressed the desire for former residents of DeMotte to come back and try to restore their city to its former state. Thus it happened that the entire 1968 graduating class of DeMotte High School appeared on the scene of disaster. Many of the residents were actively involved in the restoration of DeMotte after the waters had receded. Carol Terpstra, Edna Williams, and Brenda McKim had volunteer- ed their services and were working full time cleaning up DeMotte. Demonstrating for flood control were Nancy DeFries, Bonnie DeYoung, and Jessie VanSchepen. The head of the Missing Persons Bureau, Ken Rockwell, had reported that the flood resulted in the death of two persons: Dan Dorn whose remains were found on a basketball rim, and Gail Sekema who was found dead, clenching a book of poems. Bob DeYoung, head of the Pick-Up-All-Dead-Animals committee, and Roddy Ruisard, head of the Sanitation Department, were working day and night cleaning up their city. Many of the other residents had returned to their established occupations. Hank Zeldenrust and Roger Bykerk (new owner of Eenigenberg ' s) and Tom Hazlett (new owner of Kingma ' s) were presently engaged in a price war on vegetables. On a committee to impeach Enno Rose, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, were Jessica Tysen and Nancy VanKeppel; and they had employed Candy Lawson, Stella Goth, and Diane Herring to sing songs of protest against the court decisions that Enno had made. Millionaire Doug Thomas had recently purchased a Dating Computer and had found that Phyllis De- Vries out of all the other girls in the town would be most compatable to him as a wife. Tom Hamstra, the new town cop, had just arrested Ruth DeHaan and Carla Hayes for vandalizing boats in Janet Oezer ' s used boat dock. Denny Owen and Phil Punter had also been arrested recently--they for robbing the grocery store owned by Mike DeBour- 80 bon. Greg Erwin, Attorney at Law, had been chosen to represent them in court. Elaine Knip and Susan Musch were pursuing their careers as old maid school teachers. Jim DeVries was the owner of a Psychedelic Junk Shop, while Bob Sullivan was the owner of a pool and gambling hall. Betty Nannenga, the editor of the Kankakee Valley Post, had Pam Zeck employed to deliver the daily editions of the KVP to the doorsteps of the city residents. Susie Peterson was the largest hog raiser in the county, Dorene Till— ger was the head of the Ladies Auxiliary Marching Band, and Mary Konovsky was stock- girl in Mike ' s grocery store, head of nonbreakable items. The former residents of DeMotte gradually appeared on the scene. Debby Carmichael and Norma Hoffman, both on furlow from the WAC, were the first ones to arrive. Nancy Misch, Woman ' s World Wrestling Champion, appeared with her trainer, Harold Ven- trello. Dick Boezeman, head of a large dance studio, arrived with two of his best pupils, Diana Gwin and Carol Rayonec. Dr. Randy Kooy and his wife Terri Todd came out from Appalachia where Randy was holding the office of mayor. Wayne Walstra, who was presently unemployed, appeared with his wife, Margie Roorda , and their ten kids. Tim Hittle, who came with his chauffeur, Daryl Phelps, had recently taken over Red Skelton ' s spot as a comedian on T.V. John Bierma was the new Captain Kangaroo, while Paul Kamminga was the speech maker for President Odle. Roy Jonkman who was on an African Safari, and John Takacs, the new pope, had come to DeMotte from across the ocean. Hippie Gene Lovell appeared from Old Town, and Jerry Terborg had just returned from giving a musical performance before the Queen of England. Kathy Roorda was found to be employed as a Volkswagen test driver, and Debby Bormann, in train- ing for the Olympics, had run to DeMotte from Salt Lake City. Mike Crane was a pro- fessor of psychology at Harvard, and David Zandstra was a famous bone specialist. The last member of the ' 68 graduating class to appear was an author, Paul Boer. After spending a few weeks in DeMotte, he decided to write his next book on the disaster and of the tremendous loyalty of the great class of 1968 to their city of DeMotte, Indiana . 81 Last Will And Testament I, John Bierma , so hereby bequeath my quick wittedness to Dave Sytsma. I don ' t ask for any place in the lineup; play me where You need me. I only ask for the stuff to give You a hundred per cent of what I ' ve got. If all the hard drives come my way I thank You for the compliment. Help me to remember You won ' t let any- thing come that You and I together can ' t handle. And Help me to take the bad breaks as part of the game. Help make me thankful for them. And, God, help me always to play on the square, no matter what the other players do. Help me to come clean. Help me to see that often the best part of the game is help- ing other guys. Help me to be a regular fellow with the other players. Finally, God, if fate seems to uppercut me with both hands and I ' m laid up on the shelf in sickness or old age, help me to take that as a part of the game also. Help me not to whimper or squeal that the game was a frame-up or that I had a raw deal. When in the dusk I get the final bell, I ask for no lying complimentary stones. I ' d only like to know that You feel I ' ve been a good guy- VAN KEPPEL CONSTRUCTION CO., INC.
