For the second time in its history the city had been almost completely destroyed by a town fire. This one apparently was caused when Miss Kikkert ' s cow kicked over a lantern on the southern edge of town. Despite the frantic efforts of the fire depart- ment, headed by Byron Goth, the fire swept northward exploding past Mosier ' s Rubber-Band Factory, Holm Hanson ' s Handy Dandy Haphazard Hunting Agency, and Mitchell ' s Fire Cracker Warehouse. By this time Chief of Police, Linwood Sprouse, had ordered everyone to evacuate the city. Unfortunately, as the convicts were being led out of jail by the War- den, Esther Eck, Joseph Muriada and Jim Ulm made an escape. Fred Edwards, Don Call, and Rich Walstra were frantically hot rodding their used cars away from the blaze in an effort to save their business. By this time the Wheatfield, Hebron, Rensselaer, and Kouts fire depart- ments headed by Wayne Swanson, Louis Lloyd, Judy Post, and Cindy Evers respectively; had arrived. Three brave men, Edwin Anderson, Jon Hanford, and Glen Kingma, were ushered to the hospital after being injured in their heroic effort to save the tall woman of the local circus, Linda Sprouse. The town was fortunate that Lynn Boezeman, Marv Peterson, and Bob Schoonveld, the new stars of the Three Stooges, hap- pened to be visiting their old home town and helped in the rescue efforts. The blaze continued, however, destroying Ooms ' s Building Demolition Co. , Warren ' s Ban All Music Headquarters, Hanner ' s Beauty Shop, Holmes ' s Glue Factory, Eenigenburg ' s Bubble Gum Factory, half of the Morris Morris Pawn Shop, and Stepp ' s Paddle Repair Service. Sprouse consulted his top advisor and wife, Vicki Todd. They immediately sum- moned General James C. Hanaway and the National Guard. The mayor of our fair city, Teresa Zickeral, fled with her husband, Allen Walstra. Janitors of the school, Lynn Topkins, Linda Wahl, and Linda Stepp, gave up and ran away. As the fire reached uncontrollable heights, it was dis- covered that the OMS (Old Maid Society) had no way of escaping. Led by Shelly Watson, Diana Boezman, and Janeen Berghorst, they were swept away by the Nanenga Bus Company free of charge. Meanwhile, at the northern edge of town, the Hamstra Tinker-Toy Co. was also subject to the fire. Fred, Albert, Warren, and Mary paced the floor nervously thinking of ways to save their millions - -tinke r toys that is. As the fire swept northward, the southern edge of the city was in ruins. Larry Walstra took inventory of his model agency. Chief postmistress, Carrie Sterk, along with the aid of her two advisors, Frances Nees and Marla Williams, surveyed the damage done. Carol Post and Jean Boer ' s Tavern and Inn was also completely destroyed. Out on Prospect Hill the torment- ing hazard caused lifeguards. Sue Barker and Carolyn Rockwell, to evac- uate the pool. Michele DeFries also deserted her prospering auto supply store and commanded her always trustworthy manager, LaVerne Lanting, to mind the store. The terrible devastating fire was finally stamped out chiefly through the effort of Nancie Lucas, Smokey-the -Bear ' s press re- lations manager. 75 One week after the devastating fire took place, former residents of DeMotte returned to look at the ruins. Robert Anderson, now chief ad- visor of engineering operations to the President of the United States, who is Carl Bunning, returned to estimate the cost of repairs. Linda Cummins and Virnette Barker returned to their home town in their shiny limosine chauffered by Ralph Hunt. They were received with tremen- dous applause after climbing their way to fame in their recent movie, Sex and the Small Town Girls. Barb Jabaay reluctantly left her post as head administrator of Harvard University to reminisce with her heart- broken friends in her home town. Mike Williams regretfully sent his sympathy because he was unable to leave the monastery in New York. Dave Abbring was also unable to return due to the upcoming marble dribbling contest over on W ino Street, where he is residing while t rying to decide which college to attend. Class genius, Steve Ruisard, returned from the moon babbling like a monkey after completing a rather disas- terous journey. Due to the destruction of the town arena, the big fight between Wes Hittle and Cassius Clay was canceled. Wes, who had al- ready beaten Clay verbally was now scheduled to face him in the ring. Karen Mak, Wesley ' s manager, was very disappointed. Carol Myers, Manager of Clay (who is now nearing 40) said she was sure her boy could have beaten the tar out of Wes anyway. Classmate Don Abbring, better known as Pork Chop Abbring, changed his mind about construct- ing another chain store due to the loss of three fingers which were acci- dentally sliced off in a meat grinder. After the excitement ended, Larry Boezeman could not be found. Later, however, he was found taking in- ventory of his gun collection in a deserted cave where he had fled from the blaze. By a careful survey it was found that only one paperback book by the famous novelist, Patsy Drake, remained unburned in the city. The person who owns this work of art, Les Woudema, was able to protect it from the blaze by insuring it for $1, 000 with Ken Altman ' s Insurance Co. For that amount Ken saved it himself. Now the fair city lies in a state of reconstruction with everyone helping. Remember! help stamp out fires; crush them fags and don ' t build campfires in the streets. Junior -Senior Banquet and Prom was held at St. Joseph ' s College the rainy evening of April 24, 1965. Barbara Konovsky was elected Prom Queen. This was quite a memorable occasion since it was the first time DeMotte held a Prom away from school. The DeMotte Homecoming was held October 19, 1965. The Home- coming queen, Miss Linda Sprouse, was crowned by Ralph Hunt at half- time. Steve Ruisard presented a dozen long-stemmed red roses, and Dave Abbring presented a gift to the queen. Before the game there was a Pep rally, bonfire, and snake dance held at the school. The game was finished with a victory for DeMotte. A Homecoming dance was held in the gym following the game.
