THE KEEN KEENER OF 1965 Volume XXIX Published By The Senior Class De Motte High School De Motte, Indiana Enter to Learn; Depart to Serve After Mrs. Hission gave us this picture of her second grade class of 1955, we began to remember many past experiences. Since then our ladder of education has brought about many changes. Our class has lost students, as well as gained them. In our fresh¬ man year, our enrollment rose to 60 when the Christian School graduates entered high school. By the time we had reached our Senior year, it had depreciated to 54. Over the years some of us have had to make great decisions, but not as great as the ones to come. Many of us have given extreme thought to our future and how we may serve some purpose. HONOR STUDENTS Left to Right; Gloria Peterson, Louella Anderson, Mirriam Moolenaar, Pat Marsh, Bob Punter, Craig Zeek, Nancy Kooy, Shirley Boer, Gail Raguse, Cheryl Zeek. METHOD USED IN SELECTING STUDENTS The honor students are those who have the highest grade point standing in the senior class. The points are figured on all grades each student earns beginning with the freshman year and ending with the first semester of the senior year. From this group the valedictorian and salutatorian honors will be figured at the end of the senior year. Administration As the graduating seniors of 1965, we will be the last class attending DeMotte High School until our senior year with an advisory board. With the school consolidation taking effect, the school will be governed by a school board with representatives chosen from the districts. The present trustee is Mr. Boissy. The mem¬ bers of his advisory board are Mr. DeYoung, Mr. Boezeman, and Mr. Kaluf. 6 ELEMENTARY FACULTY TRESA BOEZEMAN B. S. ; Indiana State PAULINE BOL B. S. ; Ball State GLADYS EWART B. This year’s council has a membership of 27 over last year ' s 24--this change was brought about by the amend¬ ment to the constitution to include the presidents of our three major clubs. Executive council meetings con¬ sisting of the officers and sponsor, Mrs. Fritch, are held before each meeting to plan the agenda. The Assembly programs selected by the council proved to be most enjoyable. These programs included James Perkins and His World of Magic, Charles King’s Music in the Air, Kenneth Goodman and His Presentation of Organ Music, and Demetrie Wilson ' s Trained Seals. An initiation week was held for all newly elected coun¬ cil members. This was climaxed by a weiner roast and party in the cafeteria. Short skits were presented at the November PTA meeting. The Christmas party, always an annual event, was well received by both students and faculty. The highlights of this program were a guest pianist, Mrs. Trudy Stephenson, who accompanied Christmas carol singing by the student body, and a rendition of several seasonal numbers by the band along with a presentation of blazer jackets to 4-year band members by the director, Mr. Brandt. Members purchased student council pins and blue sweatshirts lettered in white displaying a gavel. These sweatshirts were sold to the student body in various colors and lettering as a fund-raising project. Two paper dispensing machines helped to increase the funds along with a work day of picking up corn. An anti-litterbug week was sponsored by the council in February and long hours of planning went into making Twirp Week anathe dance a success. At least two students will be attending the Student Council Workshop at I. U. this summer along with their sponsor, who will serve as a counselor. It has been a year of work, fun, and most of all one of rewarding achievement for the CounciL ANNUAL STAFF SEATED: Shirley Boer, Editor; Gail Raguse, Assistant Editor; Gloria Schriner, Subscription Manager. Craig Zeck, who was referred to as the newest A1 Capone, lost two of his important mob members. Nancy Jonkmanhad been his bookkeeper. She did a wonderful job of keeping two sets of books straight at once. Rich Vander Molen had been his trust¬ worthy hatchet-man. Both Nancy and Rich had been deported to Italy. Thinking quickly, Craig and his moll, Mirriam Moolenaar, decidedit would be wise to get two of their trusted high school classmates to fill the jobs. They began the task of locating the members of the class of ' 65. The easiest ones to find were those who had traveled a great deal and who had achieved acclaim by receiving great honor s. Marg Aalberts had been named ' Miss Universe ' some years before and served as the Mistress of Ceremonies of the Miss Universe pageant every other year. Bob Punter had been named ' Mr. Universe ' a fewyears before. Rosemary Musch had received the title of ' Mrs. America. ' Others who had become known abroad were numerous: Bob Walstra was resculpting ' Venus ' in Athens; Jim Recker became one of the first men on the moon; and Gloria Peter son was a missionary doctor in Africa. Zeck and Mirriam decided that these people were too well known. They were forced to look further. Mobster Zeckfound that many of his classmates had become involved in political and literary career s: Nich Tillema had been appointed by the President as head of a committee to investigate the worth of computers and mathematical calculators, Karen Postma had become writer of an Advice to the Lovelorn column in a leading San Francisco newspaper; Jo Anne Moss was the author of the latest best seller, How to Control Your Emotions; Sherry Stellingwerf ' s newest publication was on the Republican platform. Dave Peter son created a map of intricate road con¬ figurations from DeMotte to Antonid s Pizza. Karen Hanewich was presi¬ dent of a new society formed to create a 9:3 0 curfew law for the preven¬ tion of teenagers roaming the streets at night. Larry Musch was the head of the safe drivers ' association, and Bob Zwart was a noted news commentator. Steve Holm-Hansen, the newly elected President of the United States, and his dear wife, Kathy (Schlarp) Holm-Hansen, were in the process of installing spittoons in every room in the White House. Diane Recker, secretary to the former President, had been acquitted by the grand jury in the latest government scandal. It seemed she had been leaking information to Andy Andree, the dictator of Cuba. These people were also too well known. Several of Craig ' s classmates were found to have unusual occupations: Nance Bunning was president of the world ' s largest poster manufacturing firm, and Mary Bennema was founder of the nationally popular Cookie Cooking Company. Bob Bakker was bartender at Bernice ' s Hotel, and Howie Swart was the head of the Alcoholics Anonymous. Sandi Hunter was number one hostess at the Playboy Club. Nancy Kooy was the fat lady in the Barnum and Bailey Circus, and Pat Marsh was an accomplished lady wrestler. Shirley Boer was head coach of the Chicago Bears, and Steve Bauman was the fullback on Shirley ' s team. Craig and Mirriam decided none of the above could fill the jobs. 69 In the transportation world Craig found John Hielema racing in the Indianapolis 500, Gary DeFries as a testdriver for Ford Motor Company, Joe Davis as vice president of Firestone Rubber, Larry Evers in charge of all seaports in India, TomKlimp as an elevator operator in the Empire State Building, and Linda Vaughn and Florence Willin hitch-hiking across the country for the third time. Some of Craig ' s classmates had become actors: Ellen Belstra was currently starring as Bloody Mary in the latest Broadway hit, ' South Pacific. 11 Jeane Mak had become well known as Ellen ' s hair stylist. Barb Konovsky had replaced Josephine and was the new lady plumber on T. V. Terry Hanaway had replaced the Little Ol ' Wine Maker. Of the remaining classmates, Mobster Zeck discovered Carol Walstra as a stair sweeper in the Washington Monument, Pauline Richards as a psychiatrist needing psychiatric care worse than her patients, Louella Anderson as a ' Rockette, and Scherita Nees as a French professor at UCLA. Ron Bozell had designed a theater in which Phil Moolenaar and his band had just been granted the title of Most Popular Band in the Country. No one seemed to be able to fill the jobs, but Craig and Mirriam went on with their task. Gloria Schriner was an interior decorator working with Macy ' s department store, and Lois Bosma was a model in New York City. Gail Raguse was still in college trying to get her MRS degree. Cheryl Zeck was a spinster. She was head of an all girls school, teach¬ ing a course in the evils of marriage. Helen Barker was discovered as a maid in the White House. Charlene Groet owned the largest trucking firm in the U. S. and was busy competing with the second largest firm, The Abbring Agency. There were talks of consolidation. After carefully searching their entire high school class, Craig and Mirriam were unable to find anyone to fill the vacant jobs. Disgusted, Craig wondered if crime actually pays. 70 We, the Senior Class of DeMotte High School, in the year of nineteen hun¬ dred and sixty-five, who are about to leave this cherished school building for the complexities of a changing society, being of stable mind, body and spirit, without being under the influence of any person, drug or liquor of any source and also being unselfish of heart, do hereby will our most prized and cherish¬ ed possessions to our followers in this worldly institution of knowledge. When I have talked in anger and my cheeks were flaming red I have always uttered something which I wish I had not said. In anger I have never done a kindly deed or wise, But many things for which I felt I should apologize. In looking back across my life and all I ' ve lost or made, I can ' t recall a single time when fury ever paid. So I struggle to be patient, for I ' ve reached a wiser age, I do not want to do a thing or speak a word in rage. I have learned by sad experience that when my temper flies, I never do a worthy deed, a decent deed, or wise. Compliments JOHN H.
