The KEEN KEENER Of 1964 Volume XXVIII Published By The Senior Class De Motte High School De Motte, Indiana As We Turn The Pages Of Life A New Chapter Unfolds” What a most fitting motto for a graduating class to present. This is a time when all phases of life are being carefully scrutinized. People are asking, Is it worth while? and Does it pay? ' Even such a thing as universal education in this land of democracy is being questioned. Education today calls for thinking, for thinking things through. Education today is a tool of progress, for both tne individual and for the gr oup or nation. If we curtail education, we automatically retard progress. The progress of individuals makes for the progress of the nation. The ideas of Edison and men of his ability develop the entire world. If any nation is to make progress in science, art, music, commerce, trade, invention, industry, or government, education must not only be universal but must be progressive. The average American must not only be fitted for living, but he must do his part in advancing civilization. What does education mean to the graduate of 1964? I am quite certain that it means tools of progress in your hands. You will take these tools and with them you will build your lives. You will find your place in your home, your community, and your nation, for you have that training which fits you for leadership and cooperative labors. America needs just such young men and women as are graduating from our schools today, not only to lay down their lives, but to live in the fullness and richness their training merits. Not all can or will be Edisons, but all can and will use the inventions that genius gave the world and the use to which his inventions are directed may revolutionize civilization. So seniors, you are turning a most important page in your life. A new chapter is unfolding. Will it be a chapter of progress? Progress that will contribute to you and society, or will it be a chapter of defeat and chaos? ’he decision is yours! Honor Students SEATED: Kathy Boezeman, Connie Post, Connie Nordstrom, Frances Samules, Sandra Sipkema. STANDING: Jim Schoon, Beverly Myers, Elaine Terpstra, Karen De Vries, Bill Orsburn. METHOD USED IN SELECTING STUDENTS The honor students ar e those who have the highe st - g r a de point standing in the senior class. The points are figured on all grades each student earns beginning with the freshman year and ending with the first semester of the senior year. From this group the valedictorian and salutatorian honors will be figured at the end of the senior year. ADMINISTRA TION Administration High School Teachers MARVA BARRETT B.S. Class Prophecy It was on the eve of July 27, 1974, the great detective Marv Boezeman, dove into the problem of tracing $3.50 of the annual money of the class of 1964 of which he was a member. He concluded that in order to trace the missing money, he must contact every member of the class. He knew that this would not be an easy job to do. After weeks of continuous searching, he discovered the whereabouts of his former classmates. He started his task im m ed iat ely . To get the harder portion of his task completed, he traveled to Paris, France, where he contacted Valerie Lloyd and Donna Mason who were employed in the Hotel Paree as head Can-Can Dancers. After discussing the matter tactfully, he discovered they were innocent. Detective Boezeman then flew to Italy where he got in touch with Dave Schoonveld, one of Italy’s most famous art teachers. Still unable to find any clues to the mystery, he then proceeded to contact other classmates who were in Italy, also. Among these were Kathy Misch, head coach of the Harlem Globetrotters; Mary Lou Sipkema, who dedicated her life to being a nun; and Mike Peterson, who dedicated his life to being a priest. But they also were innocent. Detective Boezeman then flew to Alaska, where he contacted four more of his classmates. They were Karen DeVries, the first woman to climb Mt. Everest, and Tom Whitmore, who is still stationed there in the Army because he lost his dog tag. Two others were Vivian Prater and Dorothy Sterk, who are paratroopers in the Army. Here again there were no clues. Boezeman then flew to Hollywood where he found Mike Hart, the new replacement for Captain Kangaroo. Ellen Nannenga also was doing very well as the voice of the talking horse, Mrs. Ed. Audrey Evers helps Hollywood along by writing nice things about them in her gossip column. While in California he visited San Quentin where he talked to Dary Kingma and Harvey Kamminga who were serving twenty years for breaking the state curfew law. Still he found no clues. From California he went to Mexico where he encountered Jackie DeVisser, the lady bullfighter. From there he visited Elaine Grevenstuk and Mary Takacs who ran the guided tours through the desert in Mexico. He found no clues. Finding no clues Boezeman proceeded to Florida where he attended a county fair. There Ross Jabaay was auctioning off cattle. Judy Eyelander, the owner of the fabulous racing horse, Skybolt, and her jockey, Betty Hoffman, were preparing for the big race. Beverly Myers was giving exhibitions in skin diving. Two of the biggest attractions were Jim Schoon, the great alligator wrestler, and Kathy Boezeman, the tatooed lady. Finding no clues in Florida, Boezeman headed toward New York. There he talked with Annette Bosma, the Santa Claus in Macy ' s Department Store. At Carnegie Hall he talked with Joe Van Schepen, the famous concert pianist. He ate lunch at Larry Bol ' s factory where Larry puts the holes in donuts. While in New York, he went to the famous Playboy ' s Club managed by Albert Hamstra. Working under him were Sandy Sipkema, head bunny girl and Cheryl Sampson, a jazz singer. But they could offer him no help. He then proceeded to Washington, D. C., where he immediately went to the Supreme Court. Nick Tillger was on trial for obscene literature in his magazine, PLAYBOY. Bringing the charges against him were Dave Terborg and his wife, Joyce (Wiers) Terborg, who were on the committee to stamp out obscene literature. Not being able to find any clues, he flew to Chicago. In Chicago, he contacted Don Kamminga, who is very prominent in the girdle business. He also visited Elaine Terpsra and Bill Orsborn, who are in similar occupations. Elaine is an instructor at Vic Tanny ' s and Bill is an exercise instructor on T. V. He received no information from these people. Luckily D on Kachlic was in Chicago at a convention for editors of children’s magazines. He immediately contacted him; but much to his dismay, Don was of no help. By this time detective Boezeman was getting discouraged. It was time for him to return home, to De Motte. Upon returning to De Motte, he visited Calvin DeYoung and Connie (Post) DeYoung and their sextuplets. They could offer no help. Then he visited Joe DeKock at the county poor farm in De Motte, where he is janitor. While in De Motte, he paid a visit to Walter Morris who was in the hospital with a broken finger after getting it caught in his slide rule. Detective Boezeman was getting mighty discouraged, so he decided to visit the lady mayor, Constance Nordstrom. Being her generous self, she decided to donate the money since she was the one who was supposed to have taken care of the money anyway. After leaving the mayor ' s office, Detective Boezeman headed for the Systma Tanis Law Firm to finish the case. While sitting in the lobby, he talked to those fine old spinsters, Norma Hamstra and Frances Samuels. He learned they were trying to obtain a patent on their new jams and jellies. The case is ended, so Detective Boezeman decided to take a vacation and relax. He decided on a trip around the world. No. 1 Look under Light House Ad. No. 2 Look under DeKock Supply Ad. As We Have Turned The Pages Of Life, New Chapters Have Unfolded” When Mrs. Hission gave us this picture of her second grade class of 1954, we began to think about all of the many experiences we had encountered. In the first and second grades our classes were held in the building which is now the band house. In the third grade we traveled to the present high school. Our sixth year found us studying in the new grade school. The next two years found us in our former grade-school rooms. In our freshmen year, the class was enlarged by 14 when part of the Christian School graduates enrolled in De Motte for their high school education. During our high school years, several came and left our class. At the beginning of our senior year, the total was 51. Two boys moved to other schools, and two boys dropped out. As you can see, many chapters have unfolded in our lives--some of which were good and some bad. As we approach our graduation, we wonder: What do the coming chapters hold for us? When I have talked in anger and my cheeks were flaming red I have always uttered something which I wish I had not said. In anger I have never done a kindly deed or wise, But many things for which I felt I should apologize. In looking back across my life and all I ' ve lost or made, I can ' t recall a single time when fury ever paid. So I struggle to be patient, for I ' ve reached a wiser age, I do not want to do a thing or speak a word in rage. I have learned by sad experience that when my temper flies, I never do a worthy deed, a decent deed, or wise. Compliments of Van Keppel Construction Co., Inc.
