Volume XXVII Zhe Keen Keener Of 1963 Published By The Senior Class De Motte High School De Motte, Indiana The first graduating dass of De Motte High School consisted of one student and has grown continuously since. The 1963 senior class of thirty-three students will mark the end of smaller groups. The 1964 class will graduate fifty -eight students while the 1965 class should include seventy graduates. The original 1914 structure has been remodeled four times, namely: 1919, 1933, 1935, and 1957. Enrollment has increased the last few years making another addition necessary. The State Department is requiring new home economics and industrial arts departments as these are very obsolete. In 1965 industrial education must be offered in six areas and the present facilities only accommodate two teaching areas. A six room addition will be needed to meet the in- creased elementary enrollment. De Motte School Our 1963 School Year Momr Students 1963 Steve Post, Dennis Eensliuistra, Harold Knynsburg, Dave Fagenbaum METHOD USED IN SELECTING STUDENTS Tlie honor students arc tliose who have the liighest -grade-point standing in the senior class. The points are figured on all grades each student earns beginning with the freshman year and ending witli tlie first semester of the senior year. From this group the valedictorian and salutatorian honors will be figured at the end of the senior year. Administratio AdmMstratioH Principal James Fritch B.S. - M.S. We designated Betty Kaper to interview the various members. She seemed most suited for the job as she is now the editor in chief of the New York Times. Pamela Tysen, our most famous member, was the second female President of the United States (Caroline Kennedy was first.) Diane Walstra is our United States ambassador to Russia, and David Odle is one of the many secretaries our Russian ambassador has. Margorie Kikkert proudly announced that she is the head coach of the Green Bay Packers, and Ray Eck is her geeble assistant. School Skid On Friday, October 19, 1962, at 9:00 p.m. the DeMotte school athletic field was dedicated. Needless to say the field has been needed for several years. In fact the need was so great that several schools were considering dropping us from their schedule. The actual dedication of the field was under the direction of Phyllis Bykerk, who is president of the student council. Miss Bykerk explained in detail the foot- ball field plan and future plans for the over-all development of our outdoor facilities. Miss Bykerk has the honor of disclosing the name of the field which is The Keener Bowl . The field itself was not something that just happened. Much time and thought has gone into the planning of the field, which included facilities for other activities than football. The over-all plan includes provisions for football, track, baseball, softball, and hard surface court area, which would have facilities for tennis, badminton, volley- ball and basketball. Serving on the committee for planning of the field layout was Ronald Mosier, Ken- neth Zeck, Leonard Zwart, Jim Fritch, Neal Erwin, and Carl Punter.
