By Sandra Vander Molen and Ed De Vries CLASS PROPHECY It is now the year 1969, 10 years since the marvelous class of 59 graduated. Let us look at their accomplishments. Professional Artists are in a mad turmoil seeking two well-known artists, Glen Kooy and Madam Ellen Musch. Their paintings are hung in the Museum of Well-Known Criminals. The Professional Artists decided that since they couldn ' t find the well-known Artists, they would hang their paintings. Ronnie Sipkema and Jerry Oezer have recently opened a new restaurant called Sip and Suds on Wall Street, New York. Two well-known politicians, Mr. Alfred Hitchkock (alias Alvin Fase), and Mr. John Dillenger (alias Howard Crawford) request your presence at their annual spaghetti supper, which will be made of Sponge Meatballs and String Spaghetti. Two professional models, Jackie Van Wienen and Janice Klemp are modeling sack bathing suits. They ' re working at the Star Model Agency in Hollywood, California. The Ricefield Brown Devils (coached by Judy De Young) were edged by the De Motte Indians no to 60. Coach Edward De Vries gave his De Motte Indians a thorough chewing because of the miserable showing of his boys. Looking over the gossip column, I noticed Eleanor Hamstra, Pat Hielema, and Margaret Toppen are going to Florida over the winter. They commented that they were looking for BIG GAME. After working at Misch ' s Department Store in De Motte for 10 years, Angeline Walstra and Sandra Vander Molen have decided to go to Northwestern College for their M.R.S. Degree. In Congress, Linda Nannenga (R.Ind.) and Marian Groet (D.Ind.) are trying to get a new bill passed. This bill would eliminate Communists, 35 years or younger, from becoming President. Mr. and Mrs. James Smith (the former Donna Marsh) are planning a safari to Africa. They plan to capture a full-grown Hippopotamus for their Rooksfield Zoo. Miss Patricia Eenigenburg has a two-page spread in the Keen Keener. Since she took over the Eenigenburg Produce Store in De Motte in I 959 the store has slowly gone backwards for some unknown reason. Bult ' s Turkey farm, which was founded in 1959, have announced that they plan to take a nine -month tour of Russia. Professor Stanley Stayrook of Xavier University has announced that the formula _L explains why the earth turns on its axis. ■ - i- ?■ !). itfyX iSyC. J By John Fieldhouse and Sandra Van Meerten CLASS HISTORY WE BUILD THE LADDER BY WHICH WE RISE We started the journey up our ladder twelve years ago. There were thirty-five of us as we slowly began our upward journey in 1947. Our first grade teacher was Mrs. Ewart. Each day through the next six consecutive years we gained knowledge and information to continue our journey. The next two years were spent in junior high in preparation for our major step which consisted of four years of high school. Thirty -nine of us entered our Freshman year. To lead us we chose; Marian Groet as President; Angeline Walstra, Vice President; Robert Albin, Secretary; Eleanor Hamstra, Treasurer. To represent us in the Student Council we elected Pat Myers and Carroll De Vries. Our sponsor was Mr. Schreffler. In the fall we had a skating party and wiener roast. Our Valentine candidates for king and queen were Carroll De Fries and Judy De Young. There were thirty-one of us at the beginning of our Sophomore year. Our officers were; President, Kenny Nannenga; Vice President, John Fieldhouse; Secretary, Margaret Toppen; Treasurer, Pat Hielema. Our Student Council representatives were Eleanor Hamstra and Carroll De Fries. Our sponsor was Mr. Hoagland. Everybody enjoyed a skating party this fall. This year our king and queen candidates were Eleanor Hamstra and Ronnie Sipkema. Our junior year began with twenty-nine of us. The following were chosen as officers: President, Pat Hielema; Vice President, Judy De Young; Secretary, Marian Groet; Treasurer, Ronnie Sipkema. Represent- atives of Student Council were Alvin Fase and Angeline Walstra. We chose Mrs. Mann to sponsor us. For the annual Valentine candidates we chose Donna Marsh and John Fieldhouse. In the spring we honored the Seniors with a banquet. We have finally climbed far enough to see our goal. This is the final rung of the ladder. As officers we chose: Donna Marsh, President; Eddie De Vries, Vice President; Patsy Eenigenburg, Secretary; Jackie Van Weinen, Treasurer. Reporter was Jerry Drudge. Student Council representatives are John Fieldhouse and Marian Groet. This year we again had Mrs. Mann and also Mr. Mann as sponsors. We have been striving diligently to join the alumni. To celebrate this we plan to go to New York and Washington, D.C. Before we leave old De Motte High, We ' d like you to meet us -- my classmates and I. For 12 long years we ' ve worked our way. To reach our graduation day. Here is a guy who is tallest of all. We couldn ' t do without him in basketball. With a sense of humor that is hard to beat, Eddie De Vries is a king-sized treat. Next, on the list is a carefree classmate. He ' s not one to worry; what a happy fate! He ' s always been a spirited lad. Jerry Drudge is seldom sad. When it comes to football, he plays well. When it comes to basketball, he ' s swell. Who is the boy who has gained this fame? He ' s a Fase, Alvin is his name. Marian Groet is a very lively lass. In Student Council she represents our class. As President of Pep Club she ' s kept on her toes. She’s been cheerleader for years as everyone knows. Pat Hielema ' s a gal we can ' t spare. Whenever we need her, she ' s always there. As Annual Editor she has tried her best To make ours better than all the rest. Janice Klemp is not very tall, A hazel-eyed blond, a friend to all. She ' s a quiet little Senior miss Who looks to a future of wedded bliss. First, comes a boy who is tall and slim. He walks kind of slow and we all like him. Fond of hunting and farming is he, Howard Crawford is fine company. Judy De Young is our pride and joy, She ' s a friend of every girl and boy. With her laughing eyes and winning smile. You ' ll find her happy all the while. Fun to be with, a hard worker, too. She always does her share; whatever we do. We ' ve had good times with this lively lass. Patsy Eenigenburg ' s a valuable part of our class. John Fieldhouse is qute a brain. He plays fine in a basketball game. To college he ' s going; he ' s a hardworking soul. We hope that he reaches his highest goal. Here ' s a girl who is always sweet. In dress and appearance she ' s really neat. She has played clarinet for quite a long time. Eleanor Hamstra is more than just fine. Arlene Kampenga is a very nice lass. Liked by all of the Senior Class. Going to school with her has been a pleasure. We hope her future holds good luck without measure. Glen Kooy is another classmate who ' s tall. He ' s another on the team of basketbalL He ' s studied hard to received his knowledge. The finishing touches he will get in college. This is where I should write about me. But I’m not very good at it, you see. To be a secretary and someday a wife. Are the plans I have for future life. Ellen Musch is the quiet type. It ' s rare to ever hear her gripe. Drawing is her talent, and we hope someday She ' ll be a fine artist, and go all the way. Next, comes Jerry Oezer, a bit of all right, The boy with the hardy appetite. Folks know him by his happy smile. He ' s a working boy with a friendly style. Stanley Stayrook is newest to our bunch. His future is bright, we have a hunch. He knows his work and is a good sport. Everyone likes him; he ' s a friendly sort. A slender blonde is Sandra Van Meerten An interesting future is hers, that ' s certain. Though her plans are vague, we stand together To wish her a future that ' s full of fair weather. In Sandra Vander Molen we see An athletic girl, a busy bee. At her studies she ' s not a shirker. She ' s good at giggles, and surely a worker. Here are Mr. Mrs. Mann, The sponsors of the Senior clan. They ' ve guided and helped our class without fuss. They ' ve been like a mother and father to us. By Donna Marsh and Howard Crawford Mary Misch is quiet and sincere. She’s done her work well each school year. She ' s very shy with pleasant ways We predict for her future, sunny days. Dark hair, dimples, and fun to know. When there ' s work to do, she never says no. Linda Nannenga is slender and tall, Friendly to everyone, and liked by all. In or out of a game, he ' s always fair. In basketball and football he’s played his share. Ronnie Sipkema is the guy I mean; Everyone thinks he ' s really keen. Margaret Toppen has long, dark tresses; In the neatest way, she always dresses. In the band she plays a saxophone. Her pretty smile is often shown. Jackie Van Wienen is quite a gal; To the De Motte Band she ' s been a pal. She ' s studied hard, hitched her wagon to a star, Now on to college, she ' s sure to go far. Here ' s to the girl with the built-in smile. With a friendliness that ' s right in style. Angeline Walstra is just the one To call on when you ' re feeling glum. Now you’ve met the graduates, one by one, Our high school is behind us, our new life begun Now and always, our motto applies - - - - - We Build The Ladder By Which We Rise. Janice K. Jackie V. Their excellent record of 19 wins and only 4 losses tied the D. H. S. record for the most wins in one year which was set in 1941. The fans wish to congratulate the team on their fine record and successful season. To start the ball roll- ing, De Motte beat Wheatfield by a wide margin of 78-37. In the following games, Mt. Ayr beat Fair Oaks; Morrocco beat Tefft; and San Pierre beat Remington. On Saturday afternoon, De Motte added an- other scalp by beating Mt. Ayr 62-45. In the other game of the afternoon, M orocco was downed by San Pierre. In the evening before the big game, Wheatfield beat Fair Oaks in a consolation game. Next came the big game everyone had been waiting for, would De Motte become the new Champs, or would San Pierre? The start of the game was close but as time wore on, De Motte took the lead and when the final buzzer rang, DE MOTTE had won the 1959 KANKAKEE VALLEY CHAMPION- SHIP. The team did not do this all alone, no sir! They were backed all the way by the fans and were greatly guided by Coach Gene Bottorff. The Indians came through with flying colors and had won the KVT for the first time in ten years. Everyone should be proud of our boys and give them all the support in the years to come. “A” BASKETBALL TEAM First Row, Left to Right: Lynn Kessinger, Bob Westerhoff, Bob Sipkema, John Fieldhouse, Alvin Fase, Ronnie Sipkema, Alvin Kamminga, Second Row: Coach Gene Bottorff, Jim Sampson, Jerry Tanis, Eddie De Vries, Glen Kooy, Bill Van Soest, Ass ' t.
