To Mr. Stangle, a tape recorder to record all of his speeches. To Mrs. Hoeppner, a student body that returns overdue magazines and books. To Mr. Williams, a new finger to replace the one he is always pointing at something. To Mr. Hoffman, a Physics Class that will talk about physics. To Mr. Tinney, a new joke book. To Mr. Hougland, a football team that can win more than one game. Bet- ter get your own football pads Hougie! To Mr. Leslie, a new girl friend. Where are you going to put her? In the Shop? To Mrs. Kroft, a ki tchen without chairs so she won ' t have anything to stand on when the mice get out of hand! To Mr. Mann, a quiet chorus class. To Mrs. Mann, an anti-gossip shorthand class. To Mr. Babaganian, a color chart so he will wear clothes that match. Good luck, Babo! Now, we the Seniors, would like to bequeath our most hallowed possess- ions and abilities to next year ' s Seniors. I, Ruth Alma Abbring, in a mischievous state of mind will my long finger nails to Rita Hoffman for protection. I, Kay Bunning, in a black mood will my black hair to Jerry Heimlich and Larry Hunter. I, Mildred Coberly, in a helpful state of existence will my ability to stay out of trouble to Tom Fritts and Elmer Vander Molen. We, Marilyn Dahm and Pat Wyre, do solemnly bequeath our D. 0. M. membership cards to Judy Griwac and Betty DeYoung. I, Russ Duggins, in a serious state of mind will my football injuries to Don Moolenaar. I, Will Dyke, after much consideration will my ability to play a guitar and sing to Jerry Coberly. I, Bob Eenigenburg, in a helpful state of mind will my basketball ability to Wayne Nuss and Bill Kaper. I, Gerald Gross, in no state of mind whatever bequeath my ability to get along with teachers to Carolyn Jackson. I, Linda Hammerton, in a thoughtful state of mind let Diane Strankosky and Judy Dyke have my quiet ways. I, Sam Hamstra, in a generous state of mind will my old ' 54 Ford to Judy Berghorst. I, Ruthann Kampenga, with much thought toward the future give to Sandra Benema my ability to go steady. I, Jack Kelly, in my usual state of mind bequeath to Arlene Kingma my toothless smile. I, Dean Kingma, in a sleepy sort of daze will my ability to sleep in English class and get away with it to Jim Edwards. I, Duane Knynsberg, in an intelligent state of mind will my wavy hair to Herb DeFries. I, Veronica Krucek, in a generous state of mind will my driving ability to Karen Peterson and Sharon Milton. I, Bob Schaefer, in a normal mood bequeath my ability to get along with Mr. Babaganian in Government Class to Norm Groet. I, Charles Peterson, in a doubtful state of mind will to Mike Shelhart my position as center of the football team. I, Warren Swart, in a carefree state of mind will my spot on Swart ' s corner to James Ozer. I, Doreen Thornton, in an evil mood will my shorthand books to Jane Hoff- man. Better luck to you, Jane. I, Marilyn Walstra, in a sad state of mind will my big feet to Pauline Westerhoff. I, Byron Walstra, in an abnormal state of mind will my collection of old tires to Dick Kiersma. Juniors, whether you know it or not you just got some of the most cherished possessions of the Senior Class. Please take good care of them. Class Poem By Will Dyke As you read the lines that are following here, I ' ll be trying my best to make them sound clear, They may not be the best that DeMotte ever had. But you have to admit that they ' re really not bad, It ' s not that I ' m bragging you understand, But my mind and my heart are ruling my hand. Mr. Hission ' s a man we ' ll always remember. He passed away the last of December. He was good and kind and he did all he could. To help us do the things that we should. First is Ruth Abbring, now there ' s a fine lass, She ' s the Student Council member of our class. Of the Football Homecoming, she was the queen. And I ' m sure you ' ll agree that she ' s really keen. Third ' s Mildred Coberly, or Millie she ' s called, She is usually not very easily failed. This is a girl who will go somewhere, With her dazzling green eyes and her reddish-blond hair. Then comes Russ Duggins, our class President, In sports he ' s the best, he ' s not easily bent. He likes to write articles which newspapers need, In Journalism I ' m sure he ' ll succeed. Mr. Leslie also sponsors our class, He ' s the shop teacher, what a blast. .He also sings and he does real nice As the Senior ' s sponsor I know he ' ll suffice. With class sponsors we ' re overflowing. But here is another one you ' ll be knowing. Mr. Babaganian was also elected, And I know dern well he won ' t be rejected. Next is Kay Bunning, a girl who is known. For her friendly smile that is usually shown. She is always around to lend a hand, In any way that she possibly can. Next on the list is Marilyn Dahm, She is quiet and nice and usually calm. She ' ll say hello wherever you meet. With a girl like her it ' s hard to compete. I can ' t very well write a poem about me, ' Cause I ' m not very good at poetry. So if it ' s alright with you I ' ll just leave myself out, ' Cause there ' s not very much to write about. Linda Hammerton comes along next, She ' s usually got her nose in a text. She tries to help as much as she can. She ' s always there to lend a hand. Next is a girl who is known as Ruthann, Her last name is Kampenga I understand. She doesn ' t say much, but that doesn ' t matter. I have no use for a lot of chatter. Next is Dean Kingma a boy who is known. For his dropping of tobies and breaking of toes. He ' s planning on going to college next fall. What he will be, I have no idea at all. Veronica Krucek comes next on the list, She ' s a sweet 1 8 and never been kissed. Her ambition is a mystery to me. But whatever she picks I ' m sure she ' ll succeed. Then comes sophisticated Gerald Gross, To him I shall now propose a toast. He gets along tine with the girls around. Him and his Plymouth are all over town. Next is Sam Hamstra with his quiet ways. He ' s trying his best to make straight A ' s. He ' s got a physique like Joe Bonomo, And a brand new Ford that will really go. Jock Kelly ' s o boy who likes his sports, He plays in games of all sorts. Football and basketball are the main two, But he likes to try the other ones too. Duane Knynsberg I will next unfold. He has quite a nack of drawing I ' m told. He ' s also a genius in physics and math, He ' s called the brain of the Senior class. Chuck Peterson ' s one who ' s been known quite awhile. For his good-natured ways and his friendly smile. He will probably further his education. After his high school lucubration. Warren Swart is always a happy soul, He ' s big too, as you probably know. He drives a Plymouth, the second he ' s had. It ' s pink and white, he might start a fad. Byron Walstra is one of those guys. Who is tall and thin and wears levis. He is a whiz in mathematics too. It makes me feel dumb to watch him go through. Next on the list comes Bob Eenigenburg, It ' s about the longest name I ' ve ever heard. But now it ' s been shortened to Inky I ' m told, Around all the teachers he tries to be bold. Next is Pat Wyre, last but not least, She likes to ride horses, and she keeps herself neat. What she will be is hard to tell. But whatever she does, she ' ll do it well. Bob Schaeier is one that ' s on the ball, Lu is what he likes to be called. He ' s got a blue Ford that runs once in awhile. But if it doesn ' t, he still wears a smile. Doreen Thornton is next I suppose, She has blond hair and a little pug nose. She gets mad sometimes, but that ' s okay, I guess we all get to feeling that way. Marilyn Walstra is next in line, She ' s tall, nice looking, and unusually kind. She doesn ' t say much, but she has her fun. Like most of us have at sometime done. I hope you ' ve enjoyed the lines I have written, ' Cause I tried my best to make them fittin ' . We ' ll soon be leaving these halls of learning. But it won ' t be long until we ' ll be yearning. For the good old days when we were carefree and gay, But we ' ll keep on going day after day. We ' ll soon be living a life of our own, But we ' ll always remember the warmness of home. Class Prophecy By Dean Kingma My plane is almost due. For many months I ' ve looked forward to my World Tour. While waiting for my plane, I bought a newspaper, the New York Herald, owned and edited by Russ Duggins. As I scan the front page, I notice that Jack Kelly has set a new record in the Olympics in the Discus throwing event, for the fourth consecutive year. My plane soon arrives and in a short time I am on my way. As I look around at the other possengers, I notice two familiar-looking gentlemen. Going over to talk to them I find that they are Warren Swart and Gerald Gross, and that they are on their way to Africa. Gerald informs me that he is now a prosperous undertaker in the city of Boston and is going to Africa to learn the latest methods of embalming from the head hunters. Warren tells me that he hunts big game in Africa for a living, by supplying New York restaurants with wild African game. Warren also told me that Doreen Thornton is a hunting guide in Africa, and that she is one of the best. We chat a while longer and soon I notice that stewardess Edith Selby, another one of my classmates. She informs me that Duane Knynsberg is the pilot of this plane. The first stop that my plane makes is Paris, France. As I had a couple of hours to spend, I decided to see the city. As I was having lunch at one of Paris ' Sidewalk Cafes, who should I encounter but Ruthann Kampenga and Ruth Alma Abbring. They inform me that they are the owners and operators of the famous La Parisienne Dress Shop. Ruth Alma asked me if I had heard that Marilyn Dahm was the American Ambassador to France. In just ten short years she had proven herself a capable woman politician. After reminiscing a short while longer, I discovered that my time was slipping by and my plane for Venice would be due shortly. After an uneventful plane ride from Paris, I arrived in Venice. Hailing a Gondola, I decided to tour the city. Imagine my surprise when I found out that Bill Dyke was my singing Gondolier. He said this was his way of relaxing after a strenuous season of opera work in Rome. He also told me I ' d never guess who owned this fleet of Gondolas. I was really surprised when we pulled into Bunk ' s Boat Dock and found out that Byron Walstra was the owner. After talking awhile. Bill and Byron asked me if I would be interested in seeing the stage show The Wedding Ring starring the famous actresses Lizzy Lavern and Kathy Kuddles. After the show we went back stage and I was astounded to find that Lizzy Lavern and Kathy Kuddles were none other than Mildred Coberly and Kay Bunning, two more of my classmates. We spent a very enjoyable evening dis- cussing old times. The next morning I boarded my plane bound for Borneo. I had but a short time to stay, but I was determined to see another one of my classmates, Chuck Peterson, who I heard, was in the Raw Rubber exporting business. As my plane landed. Chuck was at the airport to greet me, having received the wire I had sent him from my last stop. During my brief visit with Chuck, he told me his efficient secretary, Linda Hammerton was on vacation at the time. After bidding him a quick good-bye, I boarded my plane once more and headed for the Hawaiian Islands. The plane trip was not at all dull, as I encountered still another of my classmates. Bob Schaefer. He was home-ward bound from a business trip to Austrolia. He told me that he wos in the shoe manufacturing business back in DeMotte and used only Australian Kangaree leather in the making of his shoes, by the brand name, Lu ' s Shoes. In the course of our conversation, I learned that Bob did his hide-buying from a kangaroo ranch in Australia, owned and operated by Pat Wyre and Veronica Krucek. He said they were doing very well in the business. As my plane landed in Hawaii, I bade Bob farewell and stepped off the plane to be greeted by Sam Hanstra and his wife, the former Marilyn Walstra, who had invited me to spend a few days with them on their pineapple planta- tion. After a few very short days with Sam and Marilyn, I was back at the airport ready to leave for the States, I boarded one of the new Super Sonic Rockets, invented by Bob Eeningburg. This was one of the many planes be- longing to Inkey ' s Airlines. Class History By Linda Hammerton On To Higher Heights For 12 years we, the Seniors of 57 have been working towards becoming part of DeMotte alumni. We began our Freshmen year of high school with a membership of 29 in the fall of 1953. We chose Miss Jacobus as our sponsor. As offi- cers we chose: President, Marilyn Walstra; Vice President, Sam Hamstra; Secretary-Treasurer, Kay Bunning. Ruthann Kampenga and Warren Swart were chosen as our Student Council rep- resentatives. After a short summer vacation we entered our Sophomore year of high school in the fall of 1954. We chose Mr. Rude as our sponsor. As of- ficers we chose: President, Kay Bunning; Vice President, Ruth Alma Abbring; Secretary-Treas- urer; Mildred Coberly. Marilyn Dahm and Butch DeYoung were chosen as our Student Council representatives. During the year we received our class sweaters. We had a total of 29 in the fall of 1955 as we began our Junior year of high school. Pat Wyre and Sue O ' Brien joined us at the beginning of the year. George Hoffman and Butch DeYoung did not come back to D.H.S. We chose Mr. DeGraff as our sponsor. As officers we chose: President, Duane Knynsberg; Vice President, Mildred Co- berly; Secretary-Treasurer, Bob Eenigenburg. Kay Bunning and Junior Toppen were chosen as our Student Council representatives. During the first semester Frances Kingma and Junior Toppen dropped out. In the spring of 1956 we took time out to give the farce, The Campbells Are Com- ing. A few months later we honored the Seniors of 56 by giving them a banquet in the school gym. During the year we received our class rings. In the fall of 1956 as we began our Senior year we had a membership of 23. Pat Van Meer- ten, Sue O ' Brien, Bob Barker and Jim Unzicker did not come back to D.H.S. We chose Mr. His- sion as our sponsor. As officers we chose: Presi- dent, Russell Duggins; Vice President, Bill Dyke; Secretary-Treasurer, Duane Knynsberg. Ruth Alma Abbring and Charles Peterson were chosen as our Student Council representatives. Before Christmas wke chose Mr. Tinney to direct our play, Aunt Samanthy Rules The Roost. It turn- ed out successfully. During the Christmas vaca- tion we were deeply saddened by the passing away of our sponsor, Mr. Hission. Since we had to progress forward we needed a new sponsor. We chose two, Mr. Leslie and Mr. Babaganian. Shortly after the second semester started Edith Selby moved to Rensselaer cutting our member- ship to 22. This ended a very eventful year. Now we can gaze fondly at the walls of D.H.S. and remember many happy as well as sad things that has happened to us. We also know that whatever the future has in store for. us we will always remember the good old days at DEMOTTE HIGH SCHOOL. FACULTY High School Faculty Donna Mann B.S. English, Phys. This year Mildred Coberly as editor and Diane Strankosky as assistant editor guided the staff in producing this paper. When we wanted any pictures for our paper the Camera Club took them for us and developed them for us. We changed the price of our paper to 10c instead of 5c due to financial difficulties. We have no money allocated to us so we depend entirely on paper sales and advertisement. The members of this year ' s club totals 12. This low membership is due to the requirements for membership. To jo in the club a student must be either a Junior or a Senior. It is not necessary, but is recommended that the student have a B average in their studies. The aim of our dramatics club is to provide fine entertainment for the students of this school and participate in this entertainment to the best of their ability. And though you may think you’re just treading the mill, Don’t belittle the job that you may fill; For however little your job may appear, Your just as important as some little gear That meshes with others in some big machine. And helps keep i t going, though never is seen. They could do without you, you’ll have to admit, For business keeps going when the big fellow quits! And always remember this my friend, if you can The jobs more important, oh yes, than the man! So, if its your hope, to stay off the shelf. Think more of your job than you do of yourself. Your job is important, don’t think it is not— So try hard to give it the best that you’ve got, But don’t ever think you’re of little account, Remember you’re part of the total amount.
