Mr. Hission has been our friend; He’s guided us to the very end. He’s always there to lend information: He’s helped us considerably in our education. in the front of our class sits John Bol; His name come first when they call the roll; He has blonde hair and is six feet tall; He likes to hunt and play basketball. Virginia Bush sits in the next seat; We all agree she is very neat. She has a quiet and friendly way, I’m sure she’ll be a success some day. At mathematics she’s quite a whiz, Myrle Coffer is who she is. She has dark blonde hair and pretty blue eyes, I’m sure she’ll accomplish whatever she tries. Next comes a girl with many fine features; She’s liked by her classmates as well as her teachers. At acting, she rates among the best: It’s Charmaine DeFries — you must have guessed. Evelyn DeVries is a cheerful lass, We’re glad that she’s a member of our class. Her writings and speeches are really neat, And her piano playing is quite a treat. Don Griwac’s the next one that we have in line, In Cross Country and Track, his running is fine. He’s commonly known as the humorous sort, And basketball is his favorite sport. Here we have Barbara Groet; She certainly is quite a beaut. A more popular girl you’ll never meet, And her cheerleading can’t be beat. Marlene Hamstra’s a friend of all; She has brown hair and is rather tall. She could be called a hot rod queen.” She doesn’t spare the gasoline. In school work, it’s hard to compare With this girl with the light blonde hair. Carolyn Hoffman’s her name she has blue eyes; I’m sure she’ll succeed in whatever she tries. Lorraine Hoffman come next on the roll, She’s established herself as a jovial soul. Her sense of humor seems never to end; To know her is to be her friend. Bob Jackson’s a happy-go-lucky boy; His ’51 Merc is his pride and joy. His sense of humor cannot be beat; He’s three inches tall, with an added six feet. Marvin Kaluf is quite a lad; His thoughts and deeds are never bad. He has dark hair and a winning smile; He always dresses in the best of style. Robert Kaper is rather tall. Which aids him in his basketball. He’s 6 feet 3 in stocking feet; He claims his car cannot be beat. He’s in our class; his name is Roy; He is a delightful sort of boy. He’s a halfback on our football team; Kingma’s running is really on the beam. She’s editor of the newspaper staff; She does much work on its behalf. She’s commonly known as Carol Kooy And liked by every girl and boy. Ron Marshall has gained football fame By his running in many a game. He runs the 220 and 100 in track, And in basketball he is no quack. Howard McDaniel, we have him next; He’s known to all his friends as Rex. He has green eyes; his hair is light, And his car is his delight. Mona Nannenga has dark brown hair, And her complexion is very fair; She’s 5 feet 6; her eyes are green; Her singing ability is very keen. Now here comes a Thorton, his first name is Bill, His humorous way will delight you; it will. He likes to play football; he’s good at it, too. And then in his studies, he’s among the top few. Marvin Vander Molen’s rather short, Driving his car is his favorite sport, It is a green ’53 Ford, With his company no one is bored. He has broad shoulders and curly hair, Junior Van Keppel shows no despair His humor is of the boisterous blend. While playing football, he is an end. Bob Van Meeten we meet on the way; He spends most his time with his blue Chev- rolet; He stands 5 feet 10 and has light brown hair, And with his friendly way it’s hard to com- pare. Marilyn Van Wienen is next in the line, Her scholastic achievements are very fine. Her first love’s been music since the day she was born. She plays the piano and also a horn. Ray Nannenga is a fellow who is liked by all; He has great ability to play basketball. He is a friendly and personable type; It’s very rare to hear him gripe. About Mary Scott I shall report She has black hair and is quite short; Her happy smile is contagious; To think bad of her would be outrageous. Here we have a girl named Shirlee; Her hair is black and very curly. Her happy face lacks despair; At school activities she does her share. In the band she plays an alto horn; Her musical talent’s are far from forlorn. Her singing rates among the top few, It’s Janet St. John, I’m referring to. Kathryn Walstra is a fine young lass; She is the annual editor of our class. She has a very sweet disposition; To be a school teacher is her ambition. Elaine Wiers has dark brown hair, And her complexion is quite fair. To be a secretary is her desire. This position, I’m sure she’ll acquire. Alphabetically Bob Zylstra is the last, At distance races he’s seldom passed. At basketball he does quite well, But in cross country he does excel. For 12 long years we’ve labored on And now we’ve reached, of life, the dawn. Each one will go his separate way; We’re on our own now; come what may. I see the Senior class on Mars through the courtesy of the Griwac Rocket Ship Company”. This is the first success- ful rocket made by Don Griwac and his assistant Ronnie Marshall. The class of ’56 are the first people of earth to land on Mars and the people of Mars respect them with their masterful ways. As I step off the rocket who should greet me but the mayor of Mars, Bob Jackson. Carol Kooy and Janet St. John introduce themselves as ambassadors from earth. As I climb into the rockoplane, who should be the pilot, but my old classmate Howard McDaniel. The mayor suggested going to see the Marniac which is similar to the earth’s circus. Here again I meet some old friends, they are Virginia Bush and Myrle Coffer in charge of the tickets. There are many side shows and — there is Lorraine Hoffman urging people to come and see her famous friend Carolyn Hoffman, the girl from earth with the most blond hair. As I go further I detect a strange, wonderful odor and there is Shirlee Shelhart as she displays all her exotic perfumes. Elaine Wiers and Barbara Groet are her assistants as they try the effect of the perfumes on passers- by. Who should I notice testing several kinds, but Marvin Kaltif, Roy Kingma and Bob Kaper. This is surprising as they didn’t take to per- fumes in high school. I now see the Big Tent and decide to go and see what is in there. Marilyn Van Wienen is the ticket seller here. Who should usher me in but my friend Kathryn Walstra, she tells me to hurry as the show is about to begin. I find myself sitting beside Mary Scott and we start chatting. She points out some of our old classmates. Ray Nannenga is the spectator there with the little boy, and there is Marvin Vander Molen who has been successful as a comedian. The ringmaster starts to speak now and who should it be — yes, it is, Junior Van Keppel. The first act is Mona Nannenga the earth’s best trapeze artist. Her assistant is Marlene Hamstra. The next act is a clown act with Bill Thornton and Bob Van Meerten. Popcorn, Hot Dogs, Pop, Candy” shout the vendors and who should they be but Bob Zylstra and John Bol. They stop and chat awhile but ' my attention is arrested by the bare-back horse rider. I missed her name so I asked John who she is. He said it is my former classmate Charmaine DeVries. As I sit back and enjoy the rest of the Marniac suddenly I realize I have met all my classmates of 1956. Class History by Carol Kooy Success awaits at labors’ gates.” For four years we have been laborer’s at the firm of D. H. S. There has been many trying times, and often we felt over burden, but we never gave up hope. At this time I would like to review some of the facts for you. There were 32 that reported to the gate- keeper, Mr. Stangle, that day in September, 1952. Charles Moolenaar was our foreman and he checked our work very carefully. We asked Joan DeYoung to preside over any meetings that we felt it necessary to hold. Ray Nan- nenga kept the minutes and John Bol was made responsible for all matters concerning our financial status. Barbara Groet and Bob Lloyd represented us in the union. Our fellow employees welcomed us into the firm that fall by giving a party in our honor. After 2 semes- ters we found that our labor had not been in vain for we received a three month vacation; and were told that when we returned, we would receive a promotion. So in the fall of ’53 we once again checked in with the gate-keeper, and found our new foreman, Mrs. Hoeppner, waiting for us. This time we asked Bob Lloyd to be our president and Bob Jackson to be our vice president. Carol Kooy was our secretary, and Don Gri- wac was our treasurer. Glen Woudema did not report for work after the vacation, but four others joined us. They were Evelyn DeVries, Marvin Kaluf, Roy Kingma, and Kathryn Walstra. This gave us a total of 3 5. After a few months James Baker withdrew his name from the firms roll. In October, with the help of our foreman, we selected green and white sweaters with the firm’s insignia on them. Then after 2 more semesters of hard work, we were given a three month vacation. After the vacation we were all rested up and ready to get back to work. This time we again received a promotion. Once again we checked in with the gate-keeper, who we all knew by this time; and reported to our fore- man, Mrs. Hoeppner. This time Joan De- Young did not report back for work, so in the fall of ’54 we had a total of 33. Janet St. John was to lead us and Evelyn DeVries was her assistant. Lorraine Hoffman kept record of our business and Kathryn Walstra took care of the finances. Carolyn Hoffman and Bob Zylstra were our union representatives. In No- vember we received rings that symbolized which firm we were connected with. After the first semester Edith Dunham dropped out. In the spring of ’55 we gave a banquet in honor of a group of fellow laborers, who were leaving the firm that spring. Then in May we were once again given a vacation. In September of ’55 we once again returned to our firm and checked in with the gate- keeper, Mr. Stangle. He told us to report to our new foreman, Mr. Hission; for once again we had been given a promotion. John Oezer and Bob Lloyd dropped out of our firm, and Shirlee Shelhart joined our number. So we then totaled 30. This time we asked Bob Zyl- stra to be our president and Mary Scott to be our vice president. Kathryn Walstra was our secretary and Myrle Coffer was our treasurer. Carolyn Hoffman and Ron Marshall repre- sented us in the union. In May of ’56 we were given a diploma for our good work, and since our employers felt that there was a better positions for us. So we left the firms which had given us our start and each one separated to find his own way, where he was best fitted. We all have memories connected with the firm of D. H. S. Some of these memories will never be forgotten, but will live forever in our hearts. EVELYN BOB J. The Booster’s Club sells refreshments at all the home ball games, and makes streamers at tournament time. An annual party is given in honor of all the High School boys who have par- ticipated in athletics during the school year. At the beginning of the school year the re- maining funds from last year was given to the general school fund to be used for various needs Evelyn DeVries, Kathryn Walstra, of the school. The Sunshine Society in our school was 2 years old last November 16. T he membership re- mains about the same each year, and it continues to be an active part of our High School life. The Sunshiners are happy this year to have two Senior girls serving as Co-chairmen of the group. Mary Scott and Janet St. John are doing a good job at the head of our Society. Lorraine Hoffman, Kathryn Wal- stra, Barbara Groet, Ruth Alma Abbring, Janet St. John. One of the finest projects that we have ever had is the one we have this year. Several of the Sunshiners adopted” elderly women at the Convalescent Home at San Pierre. They have taken cakes, cookies, flowers and many other things over to them when they visited their adopted grandmothers.” The Society also assisted in the Heart Campaign in February. Our group had charge of the Valentine’s Day program at which time a king and queen of the High School was honor- ed. The Sunshine Sweetheart Queen of last year, Mary Scott, had charge of the program. This year is a good one for girls in the Society. It is Leap Year — and plans are under way for a Leap Year” party, at which boys will be the honored guests. The motto of the Sunshine Society is Others” and our main purpose is to make our school, our homes and our com- munity happier places in which to live and to work. In May we honor our Mothers and our Ideal Ladies at a Mother-Daughter Banquet. Newspaper Staff This year brought a change in the type of paper produced by tbe students ot ueMotte tiigh school. In recent years we have had a printed paper, but due to financial difficulties we found it necessary to change to a mimeograph type of paper. We felt that this form of paper would be educational to the students and would take care of our financial problem. In this way the students learned how to produce a paper and they learned to assume the responsibilities of printing a paper. This year Marilyn Van Wienen and Carol Kooy guided the staff in producing this paper. We had no assistant editors and we hope that someone will take an interest in guiding the group next year. Virginia Bush handled our money, and Howard McDaniel managed the art and all the “cuts”. Mrs. Hoeppner’s shorthand class typed most of the material and cut most of the stencils. This project started last fall primarily with the members of the senior English class, but at the change of the semester, the seniors began a new course in speech. Therefore, the newspaper production was con- ducted by students in other clas- ses as well. At present, the news- paper production is not under the jurisdiction of any one class. A separate junior high school staff was organized this year and the junior high was given a sep- arate page of the paper. This made more room for news from both the high school and the junior high. During the past few summers, we have been making our money from the sales of candy and pop at the Demra baseball games. In addition to this li- brary each grade room in the elementary school has its own library. A complete card catalog and shelf list is prepared and maintained for all of the books. This year a Reader’s Guide to Peri- odical Literature was started in our library. We can utilize the fine articles printed in maga- zines by having this service. The student librarians club, numbering about 25 members, meets regularly to work out li- brary regulations, procedures, and also to do routine library work. We have 5 student librarians who are members of The Indiana Student Librarians Association. They attended the State Con- vention at Indiana State Teacher’s College at Terre Haute last Fall. About 200 books have been added to our collection this year. We select the books when we go into Chicago in the winter. Many good reference books have been added. There is no doubt in our minds that the students of our school are well-read. Our circula- tion per week exceeds all expectations. One is at the Crown Point Junior High School and the other here in our own school. The Sunray girls establish ideals that they would like to live up to and they select a girl who, in reality, symbolizes these ideals. She is given the honor of being the Ideal Girl” of the Sunray girls. A party in the spring is given for the Mothers and the Ideal Girls. At Christmas time we had a party at the home of our sponsor, Mrs. Hoeppner. We sang carols, played games and had refreshments in keeping with the Christmas spirit. We helped with the Heart Fund Campaign this year. Before the end of the school year, we plan to have a joint meeting with the Crown Point girls. Phone 7-2800 YOUR JOB Wherever you’re working, in office or shop, No matter how far you are from the top, And though you may think you’re just treading the mill. Don’t belittle the job that you may fill; For however little your job may appear. You’re just as important as some little gear That meshes with others in some big machine, And helps keep it going, though never is seen. They could do without you, you’ll have to admit, For business keeps going when the big fellow quits! And always remember this my friend, if you can, The jobs more important, oh, yes! than the man! So, if its your hope, to stay off the shelf. Think more of your job than you do of yourself. Your job is important, don’t think it is not — So try hard to give it the best that you’ve got, But don’t ever think you’re of little account, Remember you’re part of the total amount. If they didn’t need you, you wouldn’t be there; So always my friend, keep our chin in the air. A digger of ditches, mechanic or clerk; Think well of our company, yourself and your work.
